Ctl fa gaifct Flavian. ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY- FEBRUAKY 5, 1854 'TO PORTLAND VIA ASTORIA." The Standard has made another funny discovery. Discussing "the Japan trade," that paper declares that if the Japan trade seeks the Northern Pacific railway, "it will nec essarily come to Portland via Asto ria." "What in the world it wants to go to Portland for remains for the Standard to show. An inspection of the size and capacity of the new O. "R. &. N. dock at this place just com pleted, would probably afford addi tional information to our friends of the interior. 3IORK TRUTH THAN POETRY. One of the Astoria papers becomes poetic and says that people may talk J of ham times, but it does not anect them, as 83,000,000 will be taken dur ing the year from the strip of water in front of that city. "We hope so, and why can not we say that it does not affect us, for 3,000,000 will be taken from the fertile fields of Linn county in solid gold during the com ing year. Certainly our prospects are nearly as good as Astoria, for wheat gold is & good as fish gold and in fact does notslipoutof one's .hands quite so easily. Albany Democrat. There is nothing particularly poetic about the statoment, but for solid truth it can't be discounted. We are glad that our Linn county friends will lift another 53,000,000 from the land. There are several counties yet to hear from. The grave and reverend senators at Washington are Wing somewhat se verely criticised for having voted themselves a private secretary each at an expense to the government of six dollars per day while the session lasts. "We cannot share in these crit icisms. The amount will be only $38,000 a year, and the surplus is cer tainly large enough to pay that little bill without hurting any one. The moderation of the senators in voting themselves only a simple secretary should be commended. Suppose, while they were about it, that they had decided to have ;t valet, a butler, a first-class cook and a coachman at the expense of the treasury, then there might bu some justification for the harsh condemnation with whioh they are visited. Senators' sons and nephews must be provided for in somewaj. Board is high in Wash ington and times are dull. The wise legislators have found the easiest way out of the difficulty in seating them around the bountiful table of "Uncle Sam." TnE repeal of the old iron-clad oath which has psised the house of rep resentatives is giving serious concern to some of the patriots in the senate. It is feared by them that it will open to a great many southern men the doors to office and to a great many persons in the same section the safes of the tieasury department in the matter of claims. Suppose it does. If the oath is a relic of a period which both side3 profess a desire to forget it should be repealed. If there are any claims which its retention bars and which are just they should be paid. If any exist they are few. The iron-clad oath should be laid away with all the other trumpery of the reconstruction era. Give us an iron clad treasury instead. John Swistojj, in his "Dashing Sketches of Men and Life in the Great City," says of Villard: "The specta cle of a noble-minded man, who only gave up the battle foi his friends when his own private fortune had been swept away in the general crash, and who then went to bed broken in body as well as in purse, is calculated to touch the hardest of hearts. It is pretty well established, however, that out of the general de struction Mr. Villard will get together something like a cold million in cash This, of course, shows a pretty big shrinkage from his former estate, but, ut the same time, no man with a mil lion is entitled to great pity on ac count of his poverty." Iy success be the criterion of merit, then, indeed, the weary old man who sank to rest in Boston last Saturday had attained the highest standard. Born a patrician, he voluntarily re signed the proffered emoluments that talent is offered and for thirty years argued the cause of human rights. Wendell Phillips as a lawyer -would, doubtless, have won renown; as an earnest, tireless advocate of the abo lition of slavery he won the imperish able regard of the world. Like Garri son and Whittier he suffered con tumely while living. Now that the grave opens to receive his clay his bitterest enemies admit his lofty in tegrity and. admire ms unswerving championship of the right The Portland Standard calls for an "organized charity relief, a relief bureau with central office, where sup plies can be sent and where the needy may obtain what relief they need without a loss of self-respect" This sounds singular in a new state like Oregon, but it is a fact that in Port land there are a great many out of employment and consequently threat ened with want The Albany Devwciat, in the in terests of leap year and the girls, is publishing a list of Linn county's marriageable young men, their age, condition, business, financial pros pects, etc. HOW 'TIS DONE IN CHICAGO. Divorce has become the staple product of Chicago and the revenues derived therefrom have brought wealth and happiness to many a home. The lawyers, nearly all of whom wore formerly thin, pale-faced and care-worn looking men, have swelled to proportions of startling ponderosity. They live upon the fat of the land, and have grown so out of shape by reason of their failure to take exercise enough that showmen regard them with a calculating eye. Each one of these thrifty fellows has at least twenty-five clerks in his train, who attend to all the minor de tails of the business. When a woman goes to a lawyer's office now she waits her turn to poke her head in the great man's door. Tne lawyer sur veys her for a moment from his pil lowed throne in an easy chair. "She wants to be unhitched," the clerk will say who stands at her elbow. "Got her sugar?" asks the lawyer. "I should smile," replies the clerk, bowing respectfully. "Unhitch her," saya the lawyer. The applicant is then dragged out of a side door and given a certificate declaring her to be divorced. The name of her husband is left blank, but the law permits her to fill this in at her pleasure. The wisdom of this provision has been repeatedly, proven. Astoria is making a desperate effort to get a railroad to that city, -and now has one in view by way of Winne mticca. Albany Democrat. The Democrat has dropped upon the carking care that with sorrow consumes our young life. The rail road must and shall be, even if the Columbia has to be tunneled to get to the narrow gauge at Ilwaco. If the Bartholdi statue of Liberty ware to be erected in Kentucky that grand old commonwealth would have organized a lottery scheme long enough for the purpose of procuring funds for a pedestal. As it is, the hat is still being passed around with an ardor and assiduity worthy of a col ored folks' camp meeting. An East Indian Eajah has a won derful bed which plays tunes, tells the time of day and does a great many marvelous things. Congress should engage the inventor to con struct a cabinet which can solve the tariff problem. Then the salvation of the country would be assured. The Chehalis Videttc argues that the only way to insure adequate out let for Gray's harbor products is to get Goodall, Perkins & Co., to make that u stopping place for the line of steamers they are running between San Francisco and the sound. A man named Wiggins is snowed in at the iron mines in Ontario, and the inhabitants of that district refuse to shovel him out because they think he is the weather prophet Unfortu nately for him there is something in a name. Deacon Parkinson, editor of the Port of Entry 2'imes, formerly of the Carson, Nev., Tribune, is par alyzing the Port Townsendites with his big stories. He's just as bad as he used to be nine years ago, when telling of the Washoe zephyrs. There is a good deal of rot being written concerning the Washington Terntory governorship. The prob ability is that the present able incum bent will be reappointed. He has made a good executive and deserves endorsement Some very interesting Roman sepulchral discoveries have recently been made, but the name of the dark horse that will capture the presi dential chair next election has not yet been unearthed. A Air named Mrs. Piatt has writ ten a poem to show that the only happy woman is dead. We would like to know how she ascertained that fact The editor of a New Yorkpaperhas been left a fortune of 200,000. Again is the Scriptural saying ful filled, "Unto him that hath it shall be given." A Maine judge has decided that the owners of the laud ae the -rightful owners of of the privilege of the fish traps and weirs in waters off the land. The banks hold nearly seventy three millions in specie. A great many are puzzling themselves over the question of how to get it out. . FoLiiOWiNQ the example of the senators, the statesmen in the house of representatives all want a clerk apiece, paid out of the surplus. The "Walla Walla Statesman wants to bet that the Oregon Democracy will make a clean sweep next June. That is a good bet to loso. Bakes City folks are elated over the report that the road bed of the O. R &N. Co. has been bought by the Oregon Short line. - m A oonstitdtionaii convention and a registry law are among the coming questions in Oregon politics. The last is necessary. 9 m -' The Chehalis .
