(!" X kt gaUg ltotfau. ASTORIA. OREGON: SATURDAY J ANU RY 26. 18M BOB 1NGERSOLL. AS A PLAGIARIST. The Rev. Ir. Haweis, who recently wrote a book ou American humor ists, that has been rather severely crit icised by the English press, is a very popular London preacher. He has begun to give Sunday evening dis courses for the people, and on these occasions ho lectures on some subject about which there is not much gen eral knowledge, and he manages to make these lectures so interesting that it is rather difficult to get a place at the church to hear him. One of the first discourses was on Chinese religion. Most people might think that that subject could be got over after the manner of the celebrated treatise on snakes in Ireland, as the Chinaman as seen in the United States shows very few traces of relig ion of any sort. However, it seems that he has a very good religion at home, which, like himself abroad, will wash. A great part of the lecture of Mr. Haweis was taken up by the "Life ef Confucius," and although the rev rend gentleman did not claim that Bob Iugersoll copied some of his favorite ideas from him, yet to a per son who had heard Bob and then listened to the remarks of Confucius, the resemblance was striking. We all know Confucius so well that it is im possible to believe that he is the pla giarist, and on the other hand we all know Ingersoll so well that it is im possible not to believe that he has taken advantage of Confucius being dead for some little time expect ing that wo would have forgotten how he used to talk. Confucius died US years before Christ. His great bold was that he was seeking after truth. This is what Bob pretends to be after, except, of course, in the Star Route prosecutions. Confucius would never hazard any opinions about the next world. To all inquiries on that subject he would simply answer, "I don't know' This is Robert's favor ite phrase. The heathen Chinee had three texts, which were conscience, or the perception of good and evil; humanity and moral courage. These are also Ingersoll's themes. "When Confucius was urged to pray he re fused, saying that his life was a con stant prayer. He also said when asked to prepare for another world that the present world required all his attention during this life. Of course the Apostle Robert is not to be blamed for following such a wise man's precepts, but as the papers say about their funny items, he ought to give credit to" the humorist he look the paragraphs from. A never failing interest attaches to quaint old Mexican villages and to the vestiges, still moro remote of Aztec civilization. From the neigh borhood of Los Vegas, if history is not altogether a fable, sprang the first colony, which afterward grew to the proportions that formed the great Empire of Mexico as it existed when discovered by Cortez. Doubtless New Mexico was once so abundantly populated that emigration to the south was found necessary. Hence originated the myth of the enormous bird which started with the ancestors of the Montezumas on his back, resting every night for him to found a city on his way, until ho reached the cactus bed where he was to estab lish the capital of his future king dom, a story perpetuated on the coin age of tho Mexican dollar of tho present day. How much truth there is in the old adage that "History re peats itself!.' From New Mexico again the modern Montezuma, sym bolizing a great nation, L flying on the wings of a new locomotion, stop ping on its way to found new cities or to convert old ones into new, and reaching onward for tho capital of tho Aztecs, the Spaniards, and the Mexicans, in the assured jmrposo of making it last American. The Canadian parliament opened a few days ago, and the prospects seem to point to a dull session. There is so little doing of consequence over there, or about to be done, that it cannot well be otherwise. They are 'out of tho swim" of events, as it were. Their frontier line gives them the Arctic foxes and snowbanks for neighbors. It is a little close corpo ration with a foreign figure-head. If, however, they were to blot out that boundary and come into the Union what a jolly change it would be. Then no complaints of dulness would be heird. They would thrill with the life of fifty odd millions, and bo part of a great nation. The village repu tation of their statesmen would bo given continental wings, whilo the statesmen themselves would winter amid tho delights of Washington with all the pickings and excitements that a legislator's residence there implies. - -. r. .-i Andbew Jackson has been dead nearly thirty-nine years and out of public life forty-eight years. Since his time there has been four Demo cratic presidents and two assistant Democratic presidents, but, although dead, no Democrat speaks at length of them on occasions of banqueting. Canadians are beseeching New foundlanders to enter tho confedera tion. A coMPANr is known by the men it keeps. STATISTICS OF ''CROOKEDNESS.' Pekhat3 the most curious statistical information drawn out by the closing of the year just passed is that which the New York World offers under the head of "Stealings for 1883." The World classifies tho year's pecula tions as follews: Occupation. No. Bankers 19 Bank cashiers and clerks 12 Brokers 7 State Treasurers .. 3 Merchants and agents.. 28 Clerks, Treasurers, etc.. 31 Charity and trust 9 City employes 20 County employes and revenue agents 1G .Lawyers A Amount. $3,581,000 1,070,000 JSD.OOO 303,000 2.S70.(KX) 970 0 JO 1,031,000 1,786,000 709,000 451,000 Totals 148 $13,390,000 This table would seem to firmly establish the oft-repeated assertion that theft in common with its com panion crime is almost wholly the result of opportunity. The most surprising fact is that the lawyers are at the bottom of the list No news paper men figure therein for obvious reasons. It would take more to hurt Jay Gould financially than it did to wipe out half a dozen Villards, but the signs seem to point that tho little pirate who scuttled so many craft in his time is now busy stopping leaks in the great floating coffin which holds his own fortunes. He is reported to have lost $20,000,000 last week. It may sink and carry down with it the memory of moro trickery- and cruelty and ability of its kind than Wall street can remember. Greater men and bigger fortunes have joined the wrecks before now. A Lowelii, Mass., man, with fifty hens, has netted in one year $320 from each hen. At this rate, were a man like Vanderbilt or Gould to sell off $20,000,000 worth of non-paying stocks and buy 80,000,000 hens, his annual income from this investment alone would be $220,000,000. The Philadelphia Times predicts the next presidential election will not turn upon the fact of the successful candidate being n Republican or Democrat, but upon whether he and his party can be most safely intrusted with the business interests of the country. M -n It is said that at a recent Boston wedding the six ushers wero chosen from rejected suitors of the bride. It was a grateful act to give tho unsuc cessful suitors an opportunity to wit ness the life punishment inflicted upon their successful rival. The floor of the portico of a New York house is mado of a single strip of a California redwood plank eleven and one-half feet wide. J. W. Weight of. Addison, Vt., freezes 400 turkeys daily and Trill keep them frozen for the Now York market next summer. Uklit. Pendleton is tho first Ohio senator in forty-five years v?lio has failed for re-election when his party continued in power. Pennsylvania's lumber shipments, as reckoned in AVilliamsport, footed up at more than 400,000,000 feet last year. Four, hundred and fifty-two rail road trains leave Boston every day in the week excepting Sunday. " NEW TO-DAY. Notice. CHECK. NO. 931. DRAWN BY THE undersigned on I. W. Case, banker.
