A Danish "Fishing Town. In convol
ution with Mr. N. Johanssn yesterday,
who lately returned from an extended
European trip, that gentleman said that
in his travels he' came to one place that
reminded him strongly of Astoria in the
general appearance of the city, its style
ofednstruction and the industry of its
citizens. It was formerly a lonely sand
spit, but in the last dozen years the little
city of Esberg, Jutland, on the southwest
coast of Denmark, has sprung up. The
chief industry is the catching of codfish
which is packed in refrigerators and
sold throughout Germany. The fish when
os the dock sells at six cents a pound and
meets 'with ready sale. Wherever he
vent Mr. Johansen found Danes who had
been to the United States, and in general
the people are well poBted about this
country. They import large quantities of
American meat, butter, cheese, etc., and
in evefv store is found goods of Ameri
can-manufacture. Denmark is prosper

week great quantities of cattle are
ahipped to Norwich, England.
Anotheb Suit fob SalVaqs. The libel
of $50,000 against the steamship Queen
of ike Pacific, "briefly mentioned in our
Seattle dispatches yesterday, was filed by
fourteen men, composing tho volunteer
crew of the government life-boat and
the crew of the tug-boat Gen. Canby.
The libellants claim that the tug and the
life-boat rescued all the -Queen's passen-gera,-dme309
in number; that after tho
steamer had run aground, and after as
sistance had cpme to her, there was such
a heavy swell that it was impossible for
a tug to approach near enough to receive
passengers without the intervention of
some stanncb, well manned life-boat.
The. life-boat in question made eight
trips to .tags half a mile distant, receiv
ing and rescuing 175 passengers. The
remaining passengers were rescued by
the Canby, which Drought a scow from
Astoria to the wreck, At the request of

DEATH AND DISASTER IX COLORADO.
Ispkcial 10 tiij: asto::iaj
The Dalles, Jan. 2L About 1 o'clock
this morning an alarm of fire was sound
ed and flames were seen issuing from
the rear of Baden's hat store on Second
street, which was soon a glowing mass of
flames. Despite the efforts of the fire
men the fire extended eastward on Second
street to Snipss & Kinnessly's drug store,
where it was checked in that direction,
Northward the flames roared up Court
I street to the oilice of the Waseo Sun, de
stroying in all eleven buildings, with most
of the contents. The total los is con
siderably over $100,000; insurance about
$10,000. The fire plugs wore almost use
less, being half frozen, and the firemen,
consequently, worked at a great disad
vantage. Terrible Lon-j of Lire.
Dknveb, Colorado, Jan. 2. A dis
patch has just been received from
Crested Butte?, Gunnison county, saying
that at seven o'clock this morning at
the Crested Buttes coal mine a terrible
explosion occurred in which from twenty
to fifty miners are supposed to have been
killed. The explosion blocked the en
trance to tho mine and tho full extent
of the disaster is at present unknown.
Crowds of frantic women and children
are flocking to the scene of the disaster
and a most heart rending spectacle is
afforded.
To tlif Tolat.
All that is needed to relieve the "hard
times" in tho northwest is a little ready
monej'. As stated yesterday, there is
ample real astate security, but there is no
money. Applications for loans at oar
banks are invariably met with the reply,
"we are furnishing no money now except
toour regular commercial patrons."
And yet money is a drug in the New York
market. If our bankers were inclined to
make loans they could in six days have
all the money here needed; and that they
allow their vaults to stand empty, we be
lieve to be an indication that they do not
propose to relieve the situation. The
mortgage tux law enacted by the last
legislature is probably at the bottom of
this policy. Capitalists cannot afford
to get their projHTiy into a shape
by which it can be taxed two
or three limes over, and although tho
count ry cries out for money, and offers
the possible security for its repayment,
help is not forthcoming. The tax unon
mortgages stauds between us and relief.
Wc do not believe that the situation will
change till money flows info tho country
in payment for wheat, wool and salmon
during the coming summer and fall, and
wo must earn the money to relieve the
"hard times." We must proceed upon a
kuowledge of the fact that ''times" will
not improve at once or else disaster will
follow. And in the meantime let us get
into a habit of living cheaper and of
paying as we go. Oregonian, 21.
fall Down The Mind.
They wero sitting alone in tho parlor
when she sweetly remarked:
"Gsorge dear, can you tell me why it is
that the course of true love never runs
smoothly?"
"It does run smoothly, darling," said
George, passionately. "What could be
smoother than our true lover"
"And love is blind, is it not?" she
went on.
"Yes, love is said to bo blind," replied
George, wondering what she was trying
to get at.
"Well, I can tell you why true love
never runs smoothly,'' and she looked at
the lapel of his coat as though she would
like to go to sleep there. "Love is blind,
and instead of helping the blind it is
considered the proper thing to pull down
the blind."
George acted upon this hint and pulled
down the blind.

Brutes Talk?" "Yes," said she, medita
tively, "they can talk, and that's all it

Oub Advantage. In England the juicy
oyster has become a luxury that only the
very rich can afford. An oyster supper
costs as much in London as a dish of
nightingales' tongues in the time of La
cullus, the Roman. With us, thanks to
our proximity to Shoalwater Bay, ho is
the abundpnt glory of the night, the suc
culent delight of the dinner. Him raw
we swallow with a rapture, and him se
ductive in a milky stew, rollicking in a
shell roast, ravishing in a broil, fragrant
in a fry, or a whole encyclopaedia of ap
petizing epithets in a steam, we devour.
How could the young men find the way
to maidens' hearts if Ihe oyster was as
scarce as he is dumb? He says nothing.
He does not make a party of two a party
of three. He fulfils his happy destiny
without fuss of any kind, and strikes
chords in our natures that make life for
the moment a symphony.

HEAVY SALTAGE.
I TIip Oaten of the Pacific Again LIbficd by
j Fourteen Saliers for SuO.OOO.
Tuesday evening, says tho Seattle Intcl-
Ugcncer, Messrs. Struve, Haines fc Mc
j ilicken, and W. D. Wood, filed a libel
J against the steamship Queen of the Pa
cific They represent fourteen of tho
salvers who assisted in rescuing the
Queen from loss on tho 4th pnd5thof
September last, when that steamer, with !
tho spike-driving excursionists from San
Francisco, was stranded on Ciatsop spit.
Theso fourteen libellants composed tho
crew of the only life boat at tho scene of
the disaster and of the tug General I
Canby. This tug and lifeboat rescued all j
the passengers, numbering some Zi'i, ,
including more representative people
than ever took passage on a steamship
from San Francisco on a vessel before, or
since.
At the time the Queen went on the
sands there was considerable of a swell
running and few entertained the belief
that the vessel would ever be gotten off,
as she went on at full tide. The water
had fallen when assistance came to her,
which, added to the swell that was run
ning, rendered it impossible for a tug to
approach near enough to receive passen
gers without the intervention of some
staunch, well-manned life-boat. The
life-loat in question made eight trips to
tugs half a mile distant, receiving the
passengers at the weather side of the
vessels, where, tho boat rose and fell from
eight to sixteen feet with each
wave. This life-boat rescued 17;
passengers. The remaining passengers
wero rescued by the tug (Jen. Canby,
which brougLt a scow from Astoria to
the wreck, and being herself of light
draught, she was enabled to "approach
within a hawser's length of the steam
ship and to drop her scow on the ebbing
tide under her le. The scow was then
drawn to the tug and again returned to
the ship for another load of passengers
until all were rescued.
The passengers having been sent to As
toria, the tug Canby and tho life-boat
were requested by the master and Gov.
Perkins, one of the owners of tho Queen
to remain by tho steamship and were
promised a liberal reward for their serv
ices. The Queen greatly desired to have
an anchor carried out astern to prevent
her from working further into the sand.
There was no tug in the vicinity that
could approach near enough to the
steamer to t?ke the anchor except at
high water, which would have been too
late. A splendid and only opportunity
was in using the scow for that purpose;
so, shortly after dark, in tho increasing
roughness of the seaj the Canbys scow
was dropped down as before and the an
chor lashed to its stem. The Canby
then towed it out where it was desiied,
and the anchor was dropped. When the
first assistance arrived the steamer
already had a heavy list to the starboard;
but aside from this, with the use of her
anchor, she was enabled to maintain her
first position. At 2 a. u. on the ftb. Ie
ing high water, the Quern made a stieun
ous effort to get off the spit, but without
avail. Early in the morning they began
to jettison the cargo with all possible
speed, and before noon $9.".003 worth had
been thrown overboard.
During the forenoon tho lifeboat and
her crew wero continuously engaged in
carrying messages and lines between tho
ship'aud tugs, and at high water on the
afternoon of tho 5th, with the assistance
of four powerful tugs and a heavy strain
on the hawser tending to the anchor, tho
ship came off and proceeded uninjured
ujon her voyage. Tho ship is valued at
$.7)0,000, and the cargo and treasure
saved at $w503,000, besides the mail and
baggage. Had the Queen remained on
the sands through another tide, her car
go would have been jettisoned. It is safe
to say that by the combined efforts of
tho salvers the ship and cargo were saved
from total loss. The owner of tho four
tugs commenced a libel suit in Portland
md required bonds to the amount of
500.003 for her release. The libellants
in the case commenced here claim $50,000.
The above though not exact is suffici
ently correct to require little addition.
t the time of tho accident the Canby
rendered efficient service and it is le
porled that her bill was promptly paid.
Hon. John Callahan, Judge First
District Court, New York, and the
Right Beverened Bishop Gilmour,
Cleveland, Ohio, have used St Jacobs
Oil and endorse it.
