-Wo, C2J !w rdU$ Ustorimi. ASTORIA, OREGON: WEDNESDAY JANUAH Y 1C. 18S1 A DEFINITION OF TERMS. Examples have always boen forth coming of the power of words or phrases over the thoughts and pas sions of man, and they are not "want ing to-day. A little attention to the discussions upon the tariff question at present "will disclose a very nota ble instance of the confusion of thought arising from this cause. The protectionists derive considerable ad vantage over their opponents, the revenue reformers, from the fact that the words which are commonly used to de?crib3 their policy, such as "pro tection,5 '"protective," etc., are mis leading in that they define only par tially the operation of the system which secures the protection aimed at only by being restrictive. The adhe rents of protection have another ad vantage over their opponents, owing to the fact that the majority of those opposed to extreme protection are usually spoken of and speak of them selves as the advocates of "free trade."' Some protectionists seek to alarm the country by proclaiming that their antagonists intend to do away with custom houses altogether. Any such statement as this, it should hardly be necessary to say, rests on an entire misconception of the aim of the revenue-Tcform movement A large part of our revenue must con tinue to be drawn from indirect tax ation, and while this continues to be the case commerce cannot be entirely free but must be fmrdened with some impositions for the sake of revenue. From this it will be seen that abso lutely free trade in the literal sense cannot probably obtain in the United States save in a future so distant as to be beyond the concern of prac tical men. The real demand made by the revenue reformers is that a gradual return be made to a condition of things under which duties will be enacted with a view to revenue solely and the tax laws be so framed as to make no dis crimination in favor of any of the country's industries a? acrainst the rest The shrinkage in stocks and bonds during 18S3 as registered by the "Wall Street indicators has been very large. Ono of the statisticians places the figures at nearly two hundred and ihirty millions of dollars. There is no occasion, however, to despair of the country. The roads are still there; there is not a square inch of steel rails the less, and a couple of hundred millions more or less do not make a great deal of difference. Be sides there are indications all around that the worst, has come, ard that things financial will now be on the mend. "DEiiiioxico's1' has long been the synonym for fine living and good cheer. The proprietor of that famous New York restaurant was frozen to death in New Jorsey last week, he having wandered from home while in a temporary aberration of mind. It was a terrible death for the prince of many a feast Sexatou John- Sherman is said to have lost a great deal of money at the last Chicago national Republican con tention, by paying in advance the expenses of southern delegates. It is plain to all observing people that Mr. Sherman has been overrated as a financier. From a large list of administrations of amesthelics, reaching over many thousands of cases, both in America and Great Britain, the average risk of life has been pretty accurately deter mined. It amounts to about one death in about 2S00 administrations. Congressman Kasson, one of the . leaders of the Eepublican side of the house, declines to be a candidate for re-election. He has concluded to be- come an editor and will have charge of. a new Iowa daily- paper to be started at Des Moines. , The New York Journal is but a .little over a year old, has 100,000 cir culation, will have 150,000 in '84, and deserves it The clever city editor, Jno. A. Greene, has contributed in no small degree to the prestige of that popular newspaper. . One of the most wonderful things about paper is its strength. As an . illustration of this a Bank of England note twisted into a kind of rope can suspend as much as 329 pounds upon one end of it and not be injured in the least. Lager beer, which thirty years ago t was practically unknown in this coun- try; is now. made by 2500 immense establishments, with over $150,000,000 of capital invested. The value of this production each year is over $200,- 000.000. The O'reybnian argues strenuously against the fifteen mill tax on Port land property. It says the levy is unwise, unjust and unnecessary, and that its collection w6nld be but an incentive to municipal theft. ' A ew days ago the lessees of the Mississippi penitentiary paid the state $33,944.33. This is the "first money received from that source; theretofore tho state has been in debt for repairs to machinery. It is estimated that over 100,000 persons met with accidental deaths during the year 1883. The fearful convulsions of nature in the Malay archipelago and in Syria destroyed over 80,000 lives. In Worth county, Ga., the drought is so severe that the twenty-five or fifty foot wells have been made one hundred feet deep and more, and still it is impossible to find an abundant supply of water. The four buildings of the "Woild's Industrial and Cotton Exhibition in New Orleans are to have 1,000,000 square feet of exhibition space, and are to cost in the aggregate only $225,000. The only copy of the London Times ever issued on Sunday was an "extra" sent out in 1847, containing an announcement that saved the Bank of England from a serious Elegant furniture is now being made exclusively of yellow pine at several factories in Paris, France. It is stated that most beautiful and striking effects are produced by this wood. It is said that nearly half of the patents applied for in recent years have been for car-couplers, and still the bulk of car coupling to-day is done with the primitive link and pin. Two skyo terriers saved the city of New York $200,000 the other day. They made such a noise when the municipal building caught fire that help came in time to put it out The aearch for pearls in the mus sels of Ohio has been a considerable industry for years. Pearl hunting has lately been reported, in Tennessee with favorable results. The storm in London on December 12th was so severe that during the night many persons got up and dressed, believing that the city was not a safe place. In Massachusetts during the laat nine months, the G. A. R has spent over $27,000 for charitable purposes, and over S600.000 during the last seventeen years. The empress of Austria writes poetry and prints it herself, thus making a short cut to fame, and giving the newspaper waste baskets a wide berth. Owing to ill health, Senator Anthony, of Rhode Island, has re signed the presidency of the senate. Edmunds, of Vermont, was elected in his place. " m The debt of the city of Elizabeth, N. J., is $6,500,000; the total valua tion of real and personal estate in that city in 1882, was $12,185,035. a ' .- London has 700,000 houses and nearly 5,000,000 inhabitants about seven people to each house. During October and November, 20,160 homesteads were taken in the Yakima land district. Fulton Market, Now York, sells 40,000,000 pounds of fish and rejects 8,000,000 annually. About 3,000 persons are annually buried in the New York "Potter's field." NEW TO-DAY. JORDAN & BOZORTH, A FULL LINE OF Crockery and Glassware.
