Don McKenzie found a gold coin in the court house last Sunday, which the owner can have by identifying. The first of the Oregon grain fleet for 1883-84, the British ship Ilossdhu, has arrived at Queenstowu in a passage of 120 days. The prolific nature of our climate was well illustrated yesterday by the appear an'ce of three women who had seventeen children in charge. .Retrenchment is the order of the day. A-new Whitehall boat is building for tlio OR. &N. Co., who, it is said, will do their own boating after the 1st. "Sinners stand on slippery places,"that is,, some of them do. A good many saints and sinners found it difficult to do any thing but fall down yesterday morning. "W. T. Boulden, of R. L. Polk & Co., is in the city in the interests of a new di rectory of Oregon, "Washington and Idaho, which those parties arc compiling. The six-ye?r-old daughter of L. D. Coffman died of scarlet fever yesterday morning. The funeral will take place this morning. The interment will be at Clatsop Cemetery. Thejury in the case of Tom Talzau, on trial for the murder of "Vm. Dunkel, brought in a verdict of "manslaughter," last Sunday evening. Talzan will be sentenced to-day. The Stale sailed seaward yesterday. The Chas. Cotestvorth and Isle of Erin arrived in. They both have valuable wheat charters. The former discharges nearly 8,000 boxes of tin here. The gentle tom-cod is still caught in large numbers, and of unusual size. Re port has it that smelt have begun to run, though it is somewhat early for that forerunner of the toothsome samlet. In the police court yesterday Joe Dob son and Jerry Dolan, who had previously gat up $10 each for their appearance to answer to a charge of fighting, failed to appear, and the $20 was forfeited thereby. The time tables for the Pacific coast for theyear 188t, prepared by the United States coast and geodetic survey, have been published. The present is the eighteenth year of the publication of the work, which, to the mariner sailing in the Pacific waters, is indispensable. Yesterday afternoon a party who want ed sausage pretty badly, and knew good sausage when he saw it, tried to steal a couple of links from Geo. Gansz, but was caught at it. He tried to get out of it, but it was too plain a case, and Gansz, after reading him a lecture on honesty, let him go. C. T. Thomes, who returned from an extended trip East last Saturday, took a different route from that usually adopted by westward bound travelers, but one that he found verypleasant. He left the Union Pacific at Ogden and rode five hundred miles on the Utah Northern, which passes through a fine stretch of country in Southern Idaho and "Western Montana, connecting with the N. P. R. R., at Garrison, from which point he rode westward on that road. AsTOKiA ScnooLS. Besides the prestige of having the finest public school build ing, north of San Francisco, Astoria public schools have the distinction of be ing taught exclusively by women. There are ten teachers employed in the three schools, and their salaries are consider ably above the average pay of teachers in this state. In this Astoria recognizes the prinoiple that if a woman can fill any de partment oi industry as wen as a man she is entitled to the same wages a man would be paid for the same work. - A. O. U. "W. The following represents the condition of the Ancient Order United "Workmen in this jurisdictien: Number of lodges, 91; number of mem bers, 3,717; paid Supreme lodge while under her jurisdiction, $50,978; paid un der separate jurisdiction, 116,000; en tire number assessed in this jurisdiction; 91; 53 of these under Supreme lodge, 38 of these under separate jurisdictions; average paid on 2,000 per annum under '"separate, 14.2-5j total number of deaths since formation m Oregon, 72. 'A Fat "Take." The sworn statement of the county clerk at Portland shows that for the last six months of '83 the fees aggregated $11,637.83. During the same time the sheriffs fees amounted to $13, 223.24. The bark Minnie M. Watts loft New York for the Columbia May 12 and July 22 was seen off Cape Horn. Nothing has since been heard of her, and she is .thought by her agents, Van Yleck & Co., "to be lost with all on board. Soon after she passed Cape Horn a terrific storm prevailed there, and several staunch clippers which encountered it were com pelled to put into Valparaiso in distress. It is probable that the Watts went down in the same storm, with twenty persons aboard. The cargo of railway material was valued at $85,000. r Couldn't Respond. An awkward trou ble about the current style of melodrama is pointed out by an eastern corre spondent. The only hit of a e'ertain piece was made by the explosion of a keg of gunpowder, which went off with a bang like a cannon, and a "woosh" like a thou sand rockets, knocking the hero's prison linto bits. "The audience made an up roar of applause. The escaped hero came out in response, but they kept 6n clap ling and stamping. Then the heroine appeared, and the villain, and the Social ist who had lighted the fuse, but nobody . was satisfactory. It was the explosive " keg that had carried off the histrionio honors of the evening, and the people only became quiet when thev realized that the keg, with all its talent as a melo dramatic actor, couldn't walk out and bowwith its hand on its heart." Piases telEemt On easy terms at Adler's music store. THE TBIAL OF THE LEAHY BBOTHKBS For the 3urder of Jack Leonard. The cburt-room was densely crowded yesterday, the occasion being the trial of the three brothers, John, James and Michael Leahy, charged with the murder of Jack Leonard, on the Klaskanine, last November. "When the case was called yesterday morning every available space in the court-room was filled; Messrs. Fulton &, Winton appeared for the defense; Dis trict Attorney McBride, assisted by Messrs. Steeves, Curtis and Taylor for the prosecution. The work of securing a jury was first in order. Thirty-eight were examined, and at 3i. m., the "follow ing jury was selected: L. B. Chase, A. Condit.'M. I. Sage, John Enberg, Chas. Stott, D.W.Overton, Wni. Moody. D. Wilson. O. V. Carter, J. Davis, Jr., J. A. Carlson, T. J. McClanahan. The trial immediately proceeded. The case was opened by T. A. McBride who .read the indictment and proceeded to briefly comment thereon, he was fol lowed by C. W. Fnltou, after which the examination of witnesses began. Henry Mack was the first witness called: his testimony was substantially that on the Saturday th6 shooting woi done he and three others, among whom was Jack Leonard, started to go to work where the had been the previous day; that when they had got within several paces of the part of the building that was standing the three defendants came out armed: one of them said "go, go," and fired, Leonard falling dead. A rigid cross examination followed, after which court adjourned to nine o'clock this morning when the trial will be resumed. Lest ErpalnN Performance. The performance of Mr. Langrisho and his admirable company at Occidental hall yesterday evening was a source of uncontrolled mirth to the audience. It was a continuous roar from beginning to end, and the laughable complications in which poor Mr. Simpson found himself and the extraordinary tardiness that Mr. Skeptic evinced in admitting facts will bo long remembered by those who were convulsed with laughter at the comicality of the situation. Mr. Lsngrishe is an admirable comedian; wo were prepared to soe a good performance, for ne comes to Astoria heralded by high praise, but last evening's performance far surpassed anything in the humorous lino seen in Astoria since the Occidental was opened. The support was thorough, and the hearty applause showed its apprecia tion by the audience. To-night Mr, Langrisbo will appear in his great character, "John Unit," in "Self; or, Life in New York." This is a three-act comedy in which he has drawn crowded houses night after night, and in which he is supported by Harry Rich mond as "Mr. Apex," Mr. Staler as "Cynosure,' and Miss Lingham as "Mary Apex." The afterpiece will be "The Gen tleman from Ireland." This gives a fine bill, and the hall will doubtless be crowd ed to its utmost capacitj. Reserved seats at the New York Novelty store. vr. c t. u. The Womans' Christian Temperance Union, organized by Mrs. Frances Wil lard in Astoria, will" meet this afternoon at three o'clock at the hall of the Y. M. C. A. Hands in pockets Won't come out; Awful moment Hope and doubt. Hope abandoned, Doubt dispelled Inquest at B. B. Franklin's held. The Next Season. But little is being done so far in preparation for next sea son's work beyond getting up supplies from San Francisco. A year ago borne of the canners were making cans; thus far that work has not begun. A few nets are being knit, though not as many as a year ago. It is thought that tho number of boats in the water next May will be less by 25 per cent than lpst year. Fueiohts. The wooden ship Indiana, 14S3 tons, was closed yesterday to Sib son, Church & Co. for wheat to Cork, U. K., Havre or Antwerp, for 32s 6d; if to direct port in U. K., Is 3d less. This is said to bo the lowest rate ever paid for like freight from this port. An iron bark one time accepted 35s, which would now be a comparatively less rate than 32s 6d for wood. The Jndiayia had laid here since April, and, like many others, could at one time have had 57s 6d for the same voyage. Tho difference is no reflection upon the sagacity of anyone, the same mistake being common in all directions. Some of the wooden vessels in port de clare thoy would not accept a HkG rate, but there is no saying what u firm offer would result in. Orcgonian,14. Fine Dress Good. Can a note bo collected by law that is dated and signed May 30, or July 4, or Dec. 25, or any other legal holiday, Sun day included? The validity of a note is not impaired by the fact that it is signed on Sunday, if it is not delivered on that day. There is no general rule or law invalidating commercial paper if executed on the other holidays you mention. When a note comes due on May 30, or July 4, or Dec. 25, or Sunday, and it goes to protest, can the bank hold the. maker of tho note for the protest fees? Notes do not come due on Sunday or other holidays. Whenever the last day of grace falls on Sunday or other holidays the note becomes due and pay able on the preceding day. It you tender pay for a note on a legal holiday and the money is refused, does it release the maker of the note from pay ing tho some? The supposition that a man would re fuse to take money on a legal holiday is rather absurd. The tender jou mention would have to bo kept good, and the maker could not escape liability, even if the payee improperly refused to accept payment in the first instance. If I gave a check dated Snnday or any other legal holiday, payable to order on a bank where I had" money on deposit, and the bank paid the same on presentation, could the bank hold me for the amount? The bank could hold you for the amount it paid 'out on your order upon a check dated Sunday. Should the banks always take notice of tho dates on the paper they take, so as to see if it i-) dated on a legal holiday? A bank should take notice of everything on tho paper it receives. If I should make u sale of a pieco of land and execute the deed on Sunday or any other legal holiday, if properly re corded, is tho deed binding on myself or my heirs? The sale of a piece of land and the exe cution and tho delivery of a deed there for on Sunday would be deemed unlaw ful in most of the States having statutes providing for the better observance of tho Lord's Day. Can you collect for goods sold on credit on u legal holiday if the one buying should refuse to pay for the same? Wouldn't you liko to know something else? OALT A PAXTSV BLOSSOM. Adolphus wore his breeches tight; Of this he did not think When he got on the roller skates To show off at the rink. His first adventure was his last, He'll put on skates no more; Ho tried to kick the roof all off, And sat down on the floor. When Dolphy dropped the girls all laughed It was an awful fall And when they had their backs all turned He backed against the wall. Ho called a friend, took off the skates, And giving him the wink, Said, "Jim, lend me that long-tailed coat, I want to leave tho rink." On Friday last, Jan. 4th, a sad ac cident occurred, by which John Woods lost his life. Ho and several other men wore breaking a jam of logs on Milton creek. He was car ried into the rapids, fell off the log and was drowned. He was a promis ing young man and had a good repu tation in this vioinity. Ho came to Oregon about a year ago and has been working in Muckle's logging camp ever since. Jfist. Advice to CoiiHumptlves.
