Some Jews Who Have Never Been Dis persed. In one of the most remote and se clnded valleys in the monntains of northern Galilee lies a village, the small population of "which possesses an interest altogether unique. As I looked down upon it from the pre cipitous and dangerous path by means of which I was skirting the flank of the mountain I thought I had rarely seen a spot of such ideal beauty. It was an oasis not actual ly in a desert, for the rocky mountain ranges werc covered with wild herb agebut in i savage wilderness of desolation, in the midst of which the village nestled in a forest of orange, almond, fig, and pomegranate trees, the tiny rills of water bv which they were irrigated glistening like silver tnreads in the sunlight, and the yel low crops beyond contrasting with the dull green of the hill vendure long deprived of water, and the gray rocks which Teared their craggy pinnacles above it. The name of this village was Bukeia. I had heard vaguely of the existence of a spot in Galilee where a commu nity of Jews lived who claimed to be the descendants of families who had tilled the land in the same locality prior to the destruction of Jerusa lem and the subsequent dispersion of the race; and as it had never been suspected that anv remnant of the nation had clung to the soil of their lamcrs irom tne tune immemorial. and as it is certain that this is the only remnant that has, I took some trouble to ascertain the name of the village, and felt that it was worth a pigrimage to visit it. Although hitherto known to Europeans and tourists, it has been for many years a spot much frequented by the .Tews of bated and Tiberias, and this summer, especially, when the cholera panic prevailed in the country, there was a perfect rush of the wealthier Jews and rabbis of those towns to its pure air and bracing climate. In a small way it is a sort of Jewish sanitarium. f'orr. JY. Y. Sun. Villard a a Reporter. Mr. Yillard's retirement last week led me to confer with an old war cor respondent who knew him well, and who said: "Yillard was u very active army writer, and both with his pen and on his horse did rapid work. Sometimes, the rajramnfiius in the profession would play a trick on him, such as getting a telegraph wire and holding it in mere hoggishness, but he always got even with such. Onco he put in his bid at a newspaper office and it was contested by another correspondent, who met with him on the Northern Pacific railroad in mid career, when they had both forgotten the little matters of their youth. Yillard knocked his censor down by disputing his bill. It became apparent to him, as the war camps disbanded, that something more substantial was required than fugitive newspaper writing, so ho apprehended the finan cial changes in the ways and means committee and bought a great quan tity of whisky on time and it gave him his start" in life."' ir. Y. Tri bune. Edward West and Frank Laflerty engaged in a free fight on, Christmas, at Uridgeporl, Baker county. In the course of the fight "Yest received serious injuries. Surgical aid was procured from Baker City, but lo no avail, as he lingered on until Janu ary 3, when he died. Both parties are old settlers.
