"; Before U. S. Commissioner Bozorth
yesterday appeared Timothy Sullivan
whose case was continued from Friday.
The evidence brought forward to sub
stantiate the charge was totally inade
quate, and in no way warranted the

is probable that a repetition of such pro
ceeding unless good reason be shown

'"It is with regret we chronicle the death
of B. G. Cabaniss, who died at his father's
'residence in this city yesterday morning.
TJeceased was a young man of great
'promise, was in his twenty-first year and

. A New Sebies. The pastor of the Bap-
tiit church, Rev. Mr. MacLafferty, since
his advent among us has evinced a com-
7 mendable desire to interest and instruct
his hearers. Having concluded two series
of .Sunday lectures, in the interest of
i those who attend church service in the
t evening, he now announces a morning
t series on "The Parables of Christ."
The,we are informed, will bo treated
' in a popular way. He certainly chooses
'a beautiful portion of tho gospel from
vi which to impart instruction, and we
think we see in the proposal a purpose to
j, meet, at least half way, the unmistakable
. demand of the times. All teaching that
; is 'forcible, that arrests" attention and
fixes" truth in the minds of men, must
largely be illustrative. Christ spoke by
.? parables, and this, doubtless, was why so
'joany heard him gladly. The promised
t series will be inaugurated this morning,
( and the parable chosen for the occasion
fc. is that of "The Talents."

Lat Erenlng'i Performance.
The rain fell in unceasing torrents last
evening, and an ordinary performance
would have played to a beggarly account
of empty benches, but despite the storm
every seat in Occidental hall was filled,
the occasion being tho second entertain
ment given by Rescue Jubilee troupe.
On the rendition of ''Among the Break
ers' the first time a large part of tho au
dience recognizing the spirit with which
the several characters sustained their
parts requested that tho performance bo
repeated. Accordingly, when tho curtain
rolled up last evening that fine drama
was presented in splendid style to one of
the largest imlieuces ever gathered in
Astoria.
That Astoria possesses dramatic talent
of a superior order has often been demon
strated, but seldom has there been
evinced such universal appreciation of
the fact as was shown last evening.
Second only in interest to tho drama
which was repeatedly applauded, was tho
olio which followed. The first to appear
was B. S. Worsley, in his inimitable make
up as n darkev in "Swing Low Sweet
Chariot,' followed byF. D.Blake, who
sang the beautiful ballad of "Loreua,"
and responded to an encore by a recita
tion "Tho Tramp.' E. Clough then sans
'Ta"ko me back to Home and Mother,"
and being vociferously called back, again
insisted on being taken home to mother
and disappeared. A. A. Cleveland in
humorous verse recited the troubles
of a much diseased man and
the course of treatment prescribed,
after which Paul Parker appeared in a
song and dsnce,"ln the Sunlight." John
Fox as "Moriarty" elicited hearty ap
plause, and some gigantic floral tributes,
which after responding to tin encore
with "Mary Kelley's Beau,"' ho carried
from the stage. 'Flv Across the Ocean"
was then sung by John P. Betts, who
when encored sang "Jnanita."' Where
all did well it would he invidious to dis
criminate, but it is tho opinion of many
that the last singer left nothing to bo de
sired in the way of vocal niolody.
Both entertainments have constituted
a grand success, and when next tho
troupe give a series of entertainments
thoy will secure, a good house on the repu
tation so justly won.

Rocsco and Beaten. About one
o'clock yesterday morning Lars Peterson
and another man started homoward to
ward Union town and shortly after pass
ing Trulliuger'rt house and while this
side of tho Cutting Packing Co.'s premi
ses they met four men who at first stood
aside to let them pass. As they wero about
going by, the group of four separated,
two going on each side the roadway.
One of tho four said as he bumped
against Peterson "'excuse me, damn you,"
then drawing what appeared to bo an
iron bar he dealt Peterson a fearful blow
on the fore part of the head, cutting the
scalp to the bono and prostrating tho un
fortunate man. His companion was un
able to render any assistance, and when
Peterson recovered consciousness he
found his pockets empty, having been
robbed of 20 in gold and a few dollars
in silver. At a later hour he had Dr.
Baker dress the wound which is a severe
one. Nothing is as jet known regaiding
the perpetrators of tho assault.
Phesi'NTAtion'. Yesterday afternoon a
party of gentlemen assembled at Alex.
Campbell's and one of tho number pre
sented him with an elegant jewel case
accompanied by the following remarks:
"Friend Campbell: Our late lamented
president Garfield said -The wine cup has
been recognized in all ages as the
emblem of hospitality and friendship.
In drinking this toast we indorse the
sentiment and pledge you a continuation
of the friendship wo have hitherto
cherished for you, believing thai 3ou will
in the future remain as true to your
friends as you have been in the past." In
testimony of your kindness wo present
you this little badge.' Tho case on be
ing opened displayed a handsome gold
shield on which was engraved "A. Camp
bell; from nis many menus, as we
journey through life let us live by the
way." " The reception of the costly gift
was a complete surprise to tho recipient
who in fitting terms expressed his grati
fication for the kindly feeling that
prompted the gift and his appreciation of
tho sentiment it conveyed and the torm
in which it was bestowed.

Foreign Salmon X-rlet.
Tho tone of tho market for salmon in
Liverpool has boen decidedly dull, if al
most entire neglect may be said to indi
cate any tone at all. Most of the houses
interested in the trade are too deeply
occupied with dried fruit and other
Christmas season produce to pay just
attention to canned goods. John West's
salmon, which we noted as being of fine
quality, has been secured for this season
by a large house here, as also has the
favorite brand of J. Williams & Co. by
another firm. Two or three small lot's
of second-rate brands have been picked
up, but, with tho exception of the brands
montioned, it mav bo taken for granted
that nearly the whole of tho new season's
salmon will bo warehoused by tho im
porters. Another account in connection
with this most important branch of busi
ness, says tho arrivals this season are not
so numerous as at this time last year,
and the shipments from tho salmon
ports will bo more widely distributed
throughout this season, thus overcrowd
ing will be-avoided. The quality is not
quite equal to tho average, as some tins
open soft, as though overcooked, and
consequently lack flavor. The low price
of hog meats appears to affect demand
somewhat, and tho attention now given
to dried fruits by grocers also lessens the
volume of trade at present. For Columbia-river
the quotations are from 23? Gd
to 25s Gd. Liverpool Corr.London Grocer.
Substantial Recognition. At tho
time of the stranding of tho Queen of the
Pacific on the 4th of last September,
prompt and efficient aid was rendered by
Al. Harris, in charge of tho life-saving
station at Ft. Canby, who, with his bravo
crew, put off to the immediate relief of
tho vessel and the hundreds of passengers
thereon. All that day and through the
night thoy worked, some of them to tho
point of exhaustion, and stayed by the
vessel till all likelihood of danger was
passed. The owners of the vessel inrecog
nition of their valuable services, mado
provisions for substantially recognizing
their services at the time. In further
recognition of their services on that oc
casion additional compensation is now
tendered as indicated by tho following
letter:
