Astoria,
A Remarkable llailroad Pass.
Among recent arrivals in JLeadville,
CqL, vras Mrs. James Caldwell, from
Missouri, to visit her son. Her trans
portation vras throngh a pass to
which bangs an interesting f ale The
instrument was presented to herself
and her husband twenty years ago
and is a life pass for both. It is rec-
ognized npon any railway in tho
United States, and was issued by the
Northern Missouri EaUroad Company
after they had respectfully declined
an offer of $10,000 from the corpor
ation. In January, 1863. the Confederate
bushwhackers set fire to the bridge
over Young's creek, and Mr. Caldwell
got out of bed in seasou to check the
flames with a pail of water. Then he
hurried to Ceutralia to give the
alarm, leaving his wife and children
to keep the fire in check. It was a
bitter cold nieht. and Mrs. Caldwell
had to wrap her children in blankets;
but despite the cold thoy worked and
extinguished the flames." The bridge,
however, had been reduced to a mere
shell. Mrs. Caldwell knew that it
could not bear up a train that was al
most due, and hurrying to her house,
she got a lantern and stood on the
bridge in the bitter blast of a Janu
ary night until that train with its
freight of human life had been
warned and stopped. As the heroic
party would take no money they were
given the famous pass, the only one of
such extent ever issued.
Some Odd Tiling.
It strikes one as odd that railroads
which haven't enough cash in the
bank to pay employes are- loudly talk
ing about quarterly dividends.
It strikes one as odd that the dis
coverer of a silver mine worth at least
a million dollars is always ready to
sell out for $500 in cash, and a barrel
of whisk.
It strikes one as odd that the Ore
gon and Transcontinental people
have so long been able to make certain
operators believe that the moon is
made of green cheese.
It strikes one as odd that the ap
palling list of weekly failures, crop
failures, lock-outs, and general out
look, is taken by bull speculators as
evidence that stocks must go up.
It strikes one as odd that Dakota
wants any more railroads, unless to
freight the snow and ice out of the
country, and bring in some families
which won't be homesick inside of
twelve hours.
A special from New Yerl: to the St.
Paul Pioneer-Press says : The belief
is gaining ground every day in "Wall
street that the Northern Pacific com
pany is on its last legs, and that it is
only a question of time when Jhe
whole concern is reorganized andthe
Oregon and Transcontinental attach
ment wiped out
'"Bridal tears," a spiced wine, is
drunk to tho health of the contract
ing parties as a betrothal in Norway.
"When a child is born a placard
bordered with red silk and lace is
tacked to the door, and friends pour
in and are treated to mulled wine and
cinnamon cake.
There are now 223 prisoners in the
Oregon penitentiary, the largest num
ber that has ever been confined there
at one time. There are 1181 confined
in the California penitentiary.

Now, these harmless and worthless plasters
