Foa the past two months an effort
has been made to bring about a rec
onciliation between Blaine and Grant
and Conkling, looking to, the next
presidential campaign.. An 'inkling
of this has 'already reachedthe pub
lic, but as between Blaine and Grant
the statements have been premature.
"What was most desired, but was still
unaccomplished, was stated as an al
ready existing fact This reconcilia
tion has been sought in the interests
of ex-Senator Chaffee, of Colorado,
who is known to be the leader of the
Blaine forces in that section, and
whose daughter is married to G,en.
Grant's son. The original scheme con
templated the nomination of Blnine
for the presidency, with the induce
mentof secretary of state held out
to Grant, and "the senate to be hand
ed back to Mr. Conkling. It was
thought that under this scheme, if it
could be carried out, the Republican
party would enter upon the next cam
paign with a spirit of unbounded en
thusiosm. it is now certain that a
reconciliation letween Blaine and
Grant lias been. effected..
