The California Redwoods.
A writer who was au eye witness to
the operation says it is a magnificent
yet painful sight to witness the ope
rations in one of those redwood for
ests. Yon stand in the midst of vs.st
trees, so close together that there id a !
dim religious light around you, like
that- of a cathedral. This delusion is
furthered by the apparent regularity
with which many of these trees grow.
You can look down a long aisle ::s if
it were a grained arch of a cathedral
roof and the only thing which un
deceives yon is, on looking up far
above your head, to see rifts or blue
sky between the branches. But you
are suddenly startled by a long cry of
warning, which follows the rhythmic
chopping sound of the ax and the
swish of the saw. It is the woodman,
and his melancholy cry jiortends the
fall of a mighty tree. There is a
long and labored groaning sound; it
is the tree breaking away from the
friendly base which has held it, per
haps for ages. Then there is the
sharp "crack." The tree litis snap
ped in twain. The mighty mass
trembles slightly for a moment, then
inclines in the direction toward which
the practiced woodman has designed
it to fall. It topples it falls. There
is an awful crashthe falling tree is
smiting the branches from a fellow
tree which stands upright, but not
for long. There is a sound like a
peal of thunder the tree has struck
the ground. The earth trembles for
rods around, as if there were an
earthquake; there is a cloud or dust,
and all is over.
The redwood is a most valuable
kind of timber. It is very slow to
bum, and if ignited is easily extin
guished. It is very heavy and very
dense in fiber, yet very easy to work,
splitting with the utmost accuracy
and yielding to the saw, chisel, etc.
with the utmost case. When polished
it makes a most handsome wood for
interior fittings, and many of the
finest, houses in California arc fitted
with the wood in its polished state.
The ilcanins: of the Wonl Christmas.
The termination "mass"' is derived
from the Saxon maesse. which means
a feast. Hence our word "mess."
Some think it is a pure Saxon word,
others that it is derived from the
Latin niissa, signifying the dismissal
of an assembly, and afterwards the
assembly so dismissed. It passed
into a termination for the great fes
tivals of the church on which the
feast of the holy communion was cele
brated. The word "mass is the
technical word in the Roman Catholic
Church for the holv communion.
Christmas, then, means the feast or
services on the day of Christ s birth
'I have seen the sea lashed into
furj- and tossed into spray, and its
grandeur moves the sonl of the dullest
man; but I remember that it is not
the billows but the calm level of the
sea from which all heights and depths
arc measured. When tho storm has
passed and the hour of calm settles
on the ocean, when the sunlight-
bathes its smooth surface, then the
astronomer and surveyor takes the
level from which he measures all
terrestrial hights and depths." Gar
field. The St. Paul Minn., J'ioneer-Press
ha5? come to the conclusion that, m
comparison with the ordinary
railroad manager, the oyster is an in
discreet and garrulous individual.

''There can be no question as to that," said
Dr. P . who is prominently connected
in a certain hospital, to hi friend, the Hmi'c
Surgeon, as the two rat having a ?tnoho and
quiot chat in the- reception room iu?e on a
recent stormy night" no question at all.'
Ever sinco I began practice in that little
country village you've heard mo speak of,
away up near Lake Ontario, t' :rty yei.r3 ago,
I havo feltin common with other physicians
tho need of a reliable plaster. There aro
so many di-oases if, indeed, the mrjority do
not come under tho rule for which a good
external application is better than remedies
poured into a patient's stomach.
That's so, Doctor, and to iiow you my faith
in your theory, I may fay that sinco 1 have
held my position here, I have opposed tho
idea of dosin? people, except in casw when
wo wore at our wit's end and it seemed to be
that or nothing. Some soothing application ,
if the patient needs anything, combined with
rest and good nursing, will do tho bujinci.5
savowhero cases of accidents require heroic
treatment."
"1 say. Doctor," said tho other, "you can
speak of it. or not, just as you like, but in my
private practice, when 1 want anything of
the sort 1 use BENSON'S CAPCINE POR
OUS PLASTER. It's a proprietary tbins
of cours. but it is by all odds tho be?t plaster
I havo come acro?.. It is Fcicntifically pre
pared, quick in taking hold. ure to relieve
whe e relief is possible, and as neat a3 wax
to handle, it is just the pi rfect flower of all
tii t has ever been hone in that line. I hap
pen to know, too, that it is being rapidly in
troduced In the principal hospitals of London
Paris, and other leading citio of Hnropo."
"You needn t fret, my friend," laughed tho
Houso Surgeon, over tho chanco of boing
caught in an act of piofesional heterodoxy,
for wo uso Hcnson's hero every day, and so
they do at the other city hospiUds. Wo find
i'.fo much better than liniintnts. lotion?. ,Vc,
that tho bottles aro actually getting scarce in
tho houso "
