TUESDAY

CHRISTMAS.
Whhthei: baiioatli lbs stars of Gal
ilee, the Southern Cross, ' or in the
shadow of the Northern pine, the
birth of Christ is annually commemo
rated by a large proportion of earth's
dwellers. To-day the story of his
advent is told in countless churches,
the lesson of humility is taught
therefrom, and the principles of
"peace on earth, gooO will to man"
inculcated in various ways.
Christmas is a season ot joy, of
gladsome feeling, of good cheer and
pleasant reunion. Xo one is insensi
ble to the pleasantness of the hour,
and evervoiie is the better for its
coming.
To us on this favored Pacific coast
Christmas comas with warm breath,
green hillsides, the plash of the rain
insuring abundance.
It does not seem long since we were
celebrating the last Christmas. "We
were thinking about it then just as
we are thinking about the prcsont;
making our few or many preparations
therefor. It passed; went into the
groat abyss that swallows uptime:
and soon the Christmas of the past
was almost as if it had never been
It will be so with the present; it came,
it went; and now only the memory of
it, It may, however, have left an im
prossion upon us: not very deep, still
an influence for good, even if only a
little. "We mny not be able to gather
up all its good; but. we may get some
of it.
If we understand it, the great, les
son of the dav is kindness kindness
at home, kindness to those not of our
home. So that we have given to us
one day of the voor at anv rale, that
without seeming to be craven or un
manly, we can go to any we have of
fended, or that have offended us. mid
may. with great propriety, say to
thorn, "It is the season of the year
that has for many years been dedi
cated to peace and go.od will; let us
keep the day in this manner, and
permit the past to be past, and w be
at pence one wiUi the ;nother." Such
is one way that this season does good.
It is not impossible that in our fami
lies there may not be as much of the
gentleness of Christ as Uicir might
be: there are n jK-rfeci iiomes, any
wore haa tbtircaiv ;xTeet christians.
And yet nearly all our eartkly happi
ness must couaa from our Ikhoc life,
or w sUtud a poor chance of getting
!:ttpMttesg out of this world at all.

home love, hoiue obedience, there
Aveukl lve an increase of happiness.
Thereat; none of as m ha;ry llict
we caw afford to throw away the
pleasures derived from oic enjoy
ment, and -with kindliest reelings to
all we find our irnest and most last
ing enjoyment m the home circle.
Tun Manitobans still talk seces
sion, and demand that ilK'ir wrongs
be redresood. Tn a speech at Winni
peg last'Thursday, Col. Atwood urged
the importance of going to the fool
of the throne, where justice alone
could be obtained, and pointed out
that the interests of the ieople of
tho oastoni provinces were totally op
posed to theirs. "We could not ex
pect justice from them. It was no
use to goMo Ottawa, where tho gov
ernment was controlled by the Can
ada Pacific railway. The British na
tion is a nation of shopkeepers, who
are ready to extend their trade in all
directions, and if we open onr ports
to them they -will come and deal."
He prophesied that the lime would
come when all would believe as he
did -that the occasion had arrived
for a now confederacy, and the time
had come when they can form a new
confederation extending from Lake
Superior to the Pacific ocean.
Mr. Arthur and his friends met
with a severe defeat in the failure of
their effort to have the next national
convention of their party held in the
east. It diminishes his chances for
nomination if he really desires one.
He ,and they should not despair,
however, because they have been
b eaton by the western hotel men
and the western railroads. These
people do not inake a candidate.
There is ample time between this and
the leafy month of Juno to pick up a
majority of the delegates -whoso
Yes" or No" will decide the fate of
so many statesmen.' The thing for
Mr. Arthur to do now is to send the
"old machine" to the repair shops.
When- Hon. "Win. D. Kelley was a
young man ' he 'and Representative
Randall's father were one day talldng
together with an 'eminent doctor in
Paris. Health was the topic of con
versation, and "young' man?' said the
doctor to Mr, Kelley, "if you will
mako it a rule, never to get exhausted
so long a"aparfr of the day remains
inVhichyou have anything to do,
you will' live to be as old as I am."
"I followed the advice," said Judge
Kelley to a Cleveland Leader corres
pondent, ''as far as I could, and I
have already lived to be older than
tho gray-haired doctor or 'Sam' Ran
dall's father."
Bishaeck is going to pay tho Pope
a visit. All Europe holds its breath.
