The storekeepers of Hillaboro and in fact all over the county are talking of adopting the casli system. The Grove merchants have already done so and we shouldn't wonder if HilLs- boro would follow suit It would be hard on the farming community to have to pay cash now in the strin gency of tho money market, but it would in the end bo best for all There is one thing certain, since the omplehon of the Northern Pacific railway, that the old system of long credits credits from one to two and three years -must be modified, if not entirely abolished; for the wholesale dealers" in Portland say they can't credit eountrv merchants on three, four or six months time any more, because the price of good?, with the opening" up of direct competition with the east have fauen so low sua the profits are so small that they must have cash or short-time credit in order to make any profit And of course the country merchants cannot risk selling their goods even on short time if the wholesalers won't give long credits. The cash svstem, after all have be come used to it, is the best for all. Then a man would feel independent to co where he liked to trade, and would naturallv co whore he could do the best with his money. Under the oredit svstem there is wrong on both sides for the seller and the purchaser; for the seller is compelled to sell his coods hichcr m order to realize interest on his capital for the time of the credit and to insuro him against a certain per cent I033 from bad debts: while, on thp other hand. the buyer often takes his credit to his neighboring storo and his ready cash where he thinks he can do better. Now this is a double injustice which wotdd be immediately remedied by the cash system. And the cash sys tem would provide against the almost certain rain of many people who bny more than they should, expecting in the genial spring weather to pay oil their debts easily at the end oi the year with their crops; but, alas! in such years as this, with light crops and a stringency in the money mar ket, they are at the mercy of their creditors, and if they were pushed to extremities, would lose all under the sheriff's hammer Ilillsboro rnde- penrlent. Mr. Gould hsis begun building his tomb. Mr. Yanderbilt has also com menced his tomb. Both are to be pa latial tombs. They will be very plain Iv furnished inside. How much sat isfaction the occupant of a magnifi cent tomb gets out of it after he gets into it is impossible to say. iNo one has come back to tell There is a general impression, however, that a man's soul does not remain perma nently in tho tomb. It may become tedious and monotonous to stay thus with one's former bones, no matter how splendid the mausoleum. Rev. F. Carmichael, chaplain of the Magdalen Institution, writes: "I asked Mr. Uaine a leading clerical temperance advocate how he ex plained chapter 31, Proverbs,' 6-7: 'Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be heavy of heart. Let him drink and forget his poverty and re member his misery no more. Mr. Caine's reply was that 'the words are plainly sarcastic.'" But Mr. Car michael questions if this passage can bo disposed of by so curt a criticism, and if its sarcastic character would suggest itself to any but the most in tense abstainer.
