ASTORIA'S INTEREST IX THE
- HATTER. -
The abdication of Yillard is a nine
days' wonder to the northwest. It is
.generally understood that he resigned
because he had to, and that his resig
nation means a change o policy.
Press comment is singularly guarded.
In general it may ba said that the
late O. R. & N. president did well,
financiallyj made money, embraced
and made the most o all opportuni
ties, and retires with a competence
ten millions or so.
Just how the change affects Asto
ria rdifBcult to determine until the
new policy of the transportation com
panies is announced. On the premise
that Yillard's power is broken, it is
safe to predicate that his withdrawal
will be our gain. He did his worst,
for, while he ruled, the doctrine of de
lay prevailed. Yiowed from liis stand
point the interests of his lines were
not identical with that of Astoria ;
their completion was not with refer
ence to this port.
Astoria's relations with Yillard
wore never cordial. YvThen he came
out herein October, '81, ho gave us to
understand that he wanted nothing
said either way; that he was not pre
pared to negotiate, and didn't recog
nize that there was such a place.
Astoria's attitude toward him was
that of a community that had valu
able rights, great natural advantages,
permanent attributes of prosperity.

cious aids to inflated growth. When
he came again last April, he came
without welcome, and went without
regret Our chamber of commerce
interviewed him: he made implied
promises and broke them, and wlien
we protested he bade us dofiauce and
metaphorically told us to go to the
devil. Because of this Astoria felt
that she had a strong opponent whc;
if ho came, would not come as a help
ing ally, but as a conquering force,
wresting what was valuable and con
ceding nothing but the harshest
terms. Honce, wc of Astoria feel no
regret at his downfall, for downfiill it
is.
Nor do we feel wiy exultation, for
the situation to xu. is one of concern.
There is considerable idle tjabble in
dulged in by irresponsible creatures
concerning "policy," while Qip real
interests or our city demand unity of
action. It is unfortunate that com
mercial rivalry has created in Port
land a spirit inimical to our growth,
but that feeling is not as jal as for
merly, and it is not in any way to As
toria's benefit that it should be fos
tered. Portland will sooner or later
realize that more is to be made by
helping than hindering our growth,
and if, as many think, the policy of
the new management shall be to build
up their interests on the Sound, the
realization of the situation on the
part of Portland will bo hastened
thereby.
It is within the limit? of the present
probability that the Oregon Trans
continental shall disintegrate; it has
been a bond of union between the 0.
R.Sc N., and the Northern Pacific;
should that overshadowing luminary
bo eclipsed, the lesser orbs would
swing each in their several orbitu,
and it is evident that the policy of
the N. P. P. R, would as inevitably
tend to aid the Sound porta as ihe
policy of the O. Ii. & N. tends to aid
Portland and, inevitably Astoria.
"Whan the split does take place it must,
necessarily, inure to our benefit.
And this brings the subject back to
the same ground that The Astoeiak
took a year ago, viz: that on the prop
er improvement of the bar depends,
largely, our prosperity. That the
completion of the N. P. JL R. indi
rectly hastened the work is manifest;
that the recent dethroning of Yil
lard further forwards it is as evident.
The more important the interior the
moro important the outlet; the great
er the yield of the Columbia basin,
the greater demand that its com
merce shall go to the sea. With the
grant removed that settlers may oc
cupy the soil, or the road built that
its adjacent territory be enhanced in
value; with the natural obstructions
to commerce removed that ships of
deepest draught may safely enter and
( depart, our city will assume the im
portance to which her position en
titles her.
As to Astoria's connection with the
railroad management it may be brief
ly said that her position is well de
fined; there is no mistaking the at
titude she assumes. Overtures from
the other side are in order and mav
bs considered. It may, however, not
be wholly out of place to suggest
that as citizens of Astorin there are
other considerations of equal impor
portance with the railroad and navi
gation questions. We have justly
earned the reputation of being a de
termined, progressive community: it
is a reputation that is to be sus-
lamea.
Leap-xeab is drawing dangerously
nigh, and many a bashful bachelor is
debating whether he will depart for
regions unknown or run the risk of
being captured by some determined
maiden who is bound to assert her
rigkts.
It is not improbable that Mr. Par-
Hell's critics will hurl at him their
shafts because of his acceptance of
the gift of nearly two hundred thou
sand dollars which his countrymen
all over the world have just given
him. In devoting himself $o the
cause of his country he has made far
greater sacrifices than this suimhand-
some as it is, can ever compensate
for. If an Irishman like Wolselcv is
rewarded with a peerage and a hand
some money gift, for having beaten a
lot of ragamuffin Egyptians in what
is facetiously called a battle, wlry
should Air. Parnell, who through five
long years has been leading his coun
trymen out of the darkness of slavery
into the light of freedom, be de
barred from receiving a testimonial
from his admirers .and friends? It is
as honorable in him to receive the
gift as it is noble in his countrymen
to bestow it
A rniVATK dispatch to "New York
from a London financier says the ori
gin of Yillard's wealth consisted of
some $200,000 which a brother of Sir
Wilfred Lawson entrusted to him for
investment in solid American securi
ties. Yillard, as agent f r the Wis
consin Central securities, is. said io
have sunk the whole amount in them.
A lawsuit was instituted which only
recently has been settled.
