The case of Geo. Vf. Andrews, charged
with assault on Chas. Olsen, was not
called in the justice court yesterday, Ol
sen not being able to be present.
The annual meeting of the stockhold
ers of the Masonic Land and Building
Association, will bo held at Capt. Flavol's
oflice at seven o clock this evening.
Merchants generally report the holi
day trade good; there never was a finer
assortment of goods or greater variety in
Astoria than that displayed this season.
Now the little boy gazes at the mantel
piece and wonders if Santa Claus will
crawl through the cracks, or whether he
will sneak up the back stairs on Christ
mas eve.
The steamer Sam will leave at eight
to-morrow morning for the accommoda
tion of those who wish to attend the
Gearhart sale at Clatsop. She will make
two round trip.?.
The Minneapolis Tribune, iu its market
reports gives "eggs candled in lota, '2o4
cents a dozen; eggs imcandled in lots,
'2114 cents." The candleing makes a
difference of a whole cent.

Robt. Carruthers tells of a coon hunt
that he and some friends of his engaged
in at Shaw's place, near Mt. Coffin, last
week. They didn't find any ooous, but
did find a Balm of Gilcadtrec four feet
through that on cutting yielded sixty
pounds of honey with a little objection
on the part of the bees.
Since April 1st 544,300 cases of salmon
have crossed Columbia river bar outwprd
bound. The Ice King cleared yesterday
with 47,551 cases. Add this to the above
and tho 28,000 that went east via N. P.
R. R., and it gives a total shipment to
date of 019,851 cases. There are not over
30,000 cases on the river.
The wire, battery, insulators, etc, for
tho electric fire alarm arrived on the last
steamer, and the boxes and gongs are ex
pected on the next. The battery is all in
place, and the next step will be to string

room will be headquarters for the cir
cuit, and tho alarm bell will be struck
from 2's Engine House.

employed at Rainier putting up the fine
ly liavored Columbia river candle fish.
Though he only introduced, this new
article.of food last season, orders are flow
ing in from far and near, and its fame
has already gone abroad. Next season
ho will enlarge tho capacity of the es
tablishment and place tho fish upon tho
market in greater quantity.

at half-past three yesterday morning, and
nearly effected his object, lie broke in
the rear entrance, and got inside whero
there was a partition which he tumbled

mates overhead, who rushed down onlv
to find an open door and the aforesaid
pair oi shoes, which the owner can have
if he will go after them.

The Ice King cleared from this port
yesterday with a valuable cargo for Lon
don. She was chartered by A. W. Berry,
of this place. Her disbursements proper
do not aggregate above S'J.OOO. Had she
gone to Portland the probability is, argu
ing from past experience, the vessel's dis
bursements would have been at least
G,O00. This illustrates tho suparioritv
of Astoria over interior paints as a port
for ships to load and sail from, as in
the case of the Wallacetotcn and other
vessels that have loaded here, the great
difference in favor of Astoria.
On the Ice King go 47,491 cases salmon
and GO cs halibut. Followinc are the

Queen of the Pacific when she ran
aground at the mouth, of tho Columbia
some time ago, was a box containing
some beautiful wedding presents, tho
property of 3Ir. B. L. Stone and bride.
Tho jewels were thought irrevocably lost,
but it seems that recently tho caso con
taining them was found by somo wreck
ers on tho coast, and falling into the
hands of honest Capt. A. T. Harris of the
life saving service, the treasure trove was
Bent daring the veek to tho grateful
owners in this city. These gifts, aside
from their intrinsic value, are doubly
dear to tho owners precious for tho
givers' sake and precious on account of
their miraculous return from the sea.

was expressly stipulated, that Mickey

and hot water for shaving and somo but
tered toast be furnished ihim at tho same
time. Mickey will distinguish himself
and be heard from in foreign courts.
The Iiavaco Railroad. L. A. Loomis
was in the city yesterday and was ex
tremely sanguine in relation to tho pro
posed railroad from Uwaco to Oyster-
ville and Gray's Harbor, of which so
much has appeared m The Astobias
lately. Without any effort Mr. Loomis
has secured over half tho amount re
quired to build and equip the road, and
he anticipates but little uilhculty in pro
curing the remainder. Tho intention is
to begin operations as soon as possible.
The route selected is an excellent one,
ana the natural road-bed over which tho
rails arc to be laid is of such a character
that nothing but the most inclement
weather could interfere with successful
prosecution of the work. It is thought
that ninety days from tho time tho first
wheelbarrow load of earth is shovelled
off, tho loot of tho locomotive will wake
the echoes of Baker s Bay, and it is rea
sonable to suppose that the 1st of May
will see tho conductor at Uwaco sing out,

gaged in laying some water pipe down
Concomly street. Now, to lay water pipe
in a due and proper manner, it is neces
sary to dig a trench. Up tho street and
toward this trench yesterday afternoon
came a drove of Chinese, herding and
surrounding four fat hogs, which, with
sacrificial rite, were to be placed as a
votive offering to tho gods. Orie of the
hogs tumbled into tho trench, and falling
upon one of the men working therein,
aroused his ire. Striking, the hog and
casting him forth with violence his owner
objected to and spat upon the ground
with vehemence.whereupon the Caucasian
arose and slapped the Chinaman and con
signed him and his kinfolk to eternal
combustion. Then aid tho three other
Chinamen eo to Justice Fox. and before
him, in the name of their injured coun
tryman, demand a warrant for tho ar
rest of the man that smote their hog
and their comrade, the warrant being in
trusted to the chief captain of police,
even unto Clark Loughrey, who made
diligent but ineffectual searcii atter the
offender.
