The Ice King cleared from this port
yesterday with a valuable cargo for Lon

of this place. Her disbursements proper
do not aggregate above S'J.OOO. Had she
gone to Portland the probability is, argu

G,O00. This illustrates tho suparioritv
of Astoria over interior paints as a port
for ships to load and sail from, as in
the case of the Wallacetotcn and other
vessels that have loaded here, the great
difference in favor of Astoria.

Among the articles jettisoned on the

He Went in Sttle. "Mickey Fat,"
whoso sylph-like form has long been a
familiar portion of the landscape, is no
longer a citizen of Oregon. Hu sailed
yesterday in a great big ship for the cove
of Cork, and the places that knew him
once will know him no longer. Long
had Mickey resisted tho coy blandish
ment of thoso who induce bold mariners
to man tho yards, but when tho trim
Inchgrcen came in, and ho was shown hor
superior accommodations ho yielded. It
was expressly stipulated, that Mickey
should have a stateroom to himself dur
ing tho en tiro voyage; that fresh linen
should be laid out for him every morn
ing, a glass of sherry, with a raw egg iu
it, urougni io uis oeusiuo wnen no rang,
and hot water for shaving and somo but
tered toast be furnished ihim at tho same
time. Mickey will distinguish himself
and be heard from in foreign courts.
The Iiavaco Railroad. L. A. Loomis
was in the city yesterday and was ex
tremely sanguine in relation to tho pro
posed railroad from Uwaco to Oyster-
ville and Gray's Harbor, of which so
much has appeared m The Astobias
lately. Without any effort Mr. Loomis
has secured over half tho amount re
quired to build and equip the road, and
he anticipates but little uilhculty in pro
curing the remainder. Tho intention is
to begin operations as soon as possible.
The route selected is an excellent one,
ana the natural road-bed over which tho
rails arc to be laid is of such a character
that nothing but the most inclement
weather could interfere with successful
prosecution of the work. It is thought
that ninety days from tho time tho first
wheelbarrow load of earth is shovelled
off, tho loot of tho locomotive will wake
the echoes of Baker s Bay, and it is rea
sonable to suppose that the 1st of May
will see tho conductor at Uwaco sing out,
"All aboard for UysterviHo I
Wak of Races. A fores of men is en
gaged in laying some water pipe down
Concomly street. Now, to lay water pipe
in a due and proper manner, it is neces
sary to dig a trench. Up tho street and
toward this trench yesterday afternoon
came a drove of Chinese, herding and
surrounding four fat hogs, which, with
sacrificial rite, were to be placed as a
votive offering to tho gods. Orie of the
hogs tumbled into tho trench, and falling
upon one of the men working therein,
aroused his ire. Striking, the hog and
casting him forth with violence his owner
objected to and spat upon the ground
with vehemence.whereupon the Caucasian
arose and slapped the Chinaman and con
signed him and his kinfolk to eternal
combustion. Then aid tho three other
Chinamen eo to Justice Fox. and before
him, in the name of their injured coun
tryman, demand a warrant for tho ar
rest of the man that smote their hog
and their comrade, the warrant being in
trusted to the chief captain of police,
even unto Clark Loughrey, who made
diligent but ineffectual searcii atter the
offender.

Where Shall I Buy My Chrhtmas Presents.
Next Tuesday is Christmas day and
the general custom being to remember
present and absent friends by giving
them something in honor of the day the
question arises where shall one go to
make their purchases. At tho New York
Novelty Store is ono of tho handsomest
and best arranged stocks to be found
anywhere. Toys, musical instruments,
fancy goods in profusion; the supply of
elegant Christmas cards being particu
larly noticeable. It is surprising to learn
the low rate at which these good; arc
sold, and the hundreds that daily visit
this establishment will attest the popu
larity of the interesting proprietor. In
deed one can hardly pass the beautifully
nrronrrrwl trrinflnTra ontonnn in
seo what presents so fair an exterior, and
once in he or she will be sure to see some.
thins that strikes their fancy and just
suited to the friend, the relative, or the
children whose heart they would gladden
by a Christmas present. For father there
is a handsomo dressing case, for mother
a beautiful work basket or an ornamentsl
toilet set; for sister an elegantly em
broidered silk piu cushion or a silver
card case, for brother a gold pen or set of
studs.
The little folks are espacially remem
bered, tho finest toys the finest games,
the neatest boxes and the countless de
vices that please and delight the children
are here m profusion. Everything is
marked in plain figares, and tho little
fellow who comes with two bits to buy a
set of tea things for his smaller sister to
play Jt keeping house gets the same at
tention as his mother who has seen a set
of silver tea spoons with which to please
her married daughter.
In variety of musical instruments tho
New York Novelty store presents tho
greatest display. One in particular, de
serves mention. It is tho Clariona. Ev
eryone knows tho difficulty of getting
music at a dance or ball, especially at a
distance from tho city. The Clanona is
an orchestra in itself. With each instru
ment goes a complete set of dance music,
and no one that can go through tho steps
of a quadrille, or who likes the misty
mazes of the waltz need forego the
pleasures of a dance, provided they can
procure a partner and a Clariona."
There is another and a larger instru
ment that is an entire novelty. It is
called an orchestrone. In outward ap
pearance it resembles a cabinet oruan. It
stands in a handsomo black walnut caso,
finely finished and elaborately carved.
Simply considered as n piece of furni
ture it would bo a handsome addition to
anv parlor, but when one takes into con
sideration tho sweet niusio it affords, it
will be found to be a most desirable ac
quisition to anv family. It has pedals as
any other organ, and by tho simplest
mechanism can be made to play any tuno
desired. Its rich, full notes are "heard
to advantage in tho magnificent strains
of Beethoven, the symphonies of Mozart,
the sublime composition of Handel or
tho more familiar melodies such as are
usually sung in church choirs. Crowds
daily listen to the choice music it affords.
It is Mr. Strauss' intention to .dispose of
this instrument for $125, to introduce
their salo ho being the only authorized
agent of tho manufacturers in this place.
With thf intention he offers it at a raffle
for 2J0 a chance, and for this sum some
one of our citizens will get a splendid
(Jhristmas present, lo go through the
list of goods displayed at the Now York
Novelty Store would be an interminable
task; suffice it to say, pay tho establish
ment a visit and see for yourselves. You
will find tho most courteous attention
aud cannot fail to bo pleased.

-'Twasoff the bleak Chehalis coast,

Three hundred inches wide;
So great was its stupendous strength,
It lashed in foam tho tide.
Its tail was long, its head was short.
And near its nine-foot nose
W'ero caverns, whence a roaring snort
Blew like a cyclone blows.
