FR03I A FORMER RAILROAD PRESI
DENT. The following lettor to lliecbambor
of commerce of this city from the
former president of the Oregon Cen
tral Railroad company, will bo read
with interest by all. Mr. Gaslou in
the years 18GS, 18G9 and 1870 was nn
indefatigable worker to further the
interests he represented. It was his
influence that largely induced con
gress to make the land grant that
now, thirteen years after, the people
of this and adjoining counties seek to
have revert to its rightful owners.
In signing the petition for the for
feiture of the grant, Mr. Gaston writes
as follows:
Gaston, Or., Dec. 4, 18S3.
I was president of the Oregon Cen
tral Railroad company at the time
congress made the grant referred to
in the above petition, and presented
the matter before committees of the
senate and house of representatives.
And while the lands were then needed
to secure the construction of the
road, the circumstances of this coun
try have been so changed since that the
grant is, in the hands of its present
owners, an obstruction to the con
struction of a railroad to Astoria and
the development of the country. For,
if the gr ant was forfeited, the coun
try would be at once rapidly settled
up, and other railroad companies
wonld build a narrow guage railroad,
if not a moro expensive line.

In the above Mr. Gaston strikes
at the gist of the matter where he
says, 'if the grant was forfeited the
country would be at once rapidly set
tled up." In this ho reiterates what
Tnu Astoriax has staled and repeat
edly demonstrated, viz : the necessity
of the removal of the grant to en
courage immigration by dispelling
the cloud that rests upon the title.
To make Astoria the city it should
be, to rid ourselves of the necessity
of importing what we want from Cali
fornia, to create a class of permanent
suppliers producers and purchasers,
to build up a great and prosperous
city at the mouth of the Columbia,
something more than territory is
needed. "Vo have a grand scope of
country to the south and oast; un
equaled in richwss of soil, multipli
city of resources, and contiguity to
an ever widening market, but of the
thousands that have during the past
twelve months entered the
Columbia gateway in search of
homos in this new northwest,
how many have remained? not one in
ten thousand. Not because we lack
the elements that go to make a home,
but because we could not demonstrate
it No man cares to labor unless
with reasonable assurance that his
toil shall be rewarded with success,
and if a vague and shadowy title cov
ers, like the tentacles of an octopus
the fairest portions of Clatsop and
Columbia counties, who can blame
the sturdy and the stalwart, the
sinewy founders of new homes to
press eastward from our shores, in
search of that heritage denied to
them at its entrance!
"We commend Mr. Gaston's letter to
the consideration of our readeVs, and
shall take fitting measures to give it
vide circulation. It is written with
consideration of the snbject, knowl
edge of its workings, aixd in the in
terests of his fellow dwellers in this
state.
The Inter-Ocean of Nov. 20 said:
"Fifty years ago to-day the first
Chicago newspaper was issued. One
hundred and forty-seven copies were
worked off, the editor being also
printer and publisher, all combined.
Mr. John Calhoun was then the em
bodiment of the art of printing in all
its ramifications, so far as this town
was couccrnqd. To-day there are
more than 2,000 compositors in the
city whose entire time is devoted to
composition- That one newspaper,
the Democrat, has developed by a
natural process of evolution into 275
regular publications, dailies, weeklies,
and all."'
The Oregon ian justly favors con
gressional aid to all Oregon coast
harbors, but omits a very important
part of the argument, viz: that suc
cess iu these matters requires con
centration, that a scaled list of appro
priations divided along an entire
coast line does no locality great ma
terial good, that the Columbia river
bar is the most important item in the
matter, that we must be just before
wo can be generous, and that a due
regard for the interests of the entire
state; demands sufficient appropria
tion from congress to render bar work
effectual.
The postmaster general in his an
nual report estimates that the rove
Hues of the department during the
next fiscal year will be equal to the
expenditures; so that the post office
is self-sustaining, even on the reduced
scale of postages. This is a splendid
exhibit of the business of the country
for the post ofiioe is one of the most
accurate commercial barometers.

says: Representative George of Ore
gon introduced a big bundle of bills
and memorials in the house 'yester
day, among them many heretofore
introduced by Dolph and Slator in
the senate. Among George's memo
rials were the following: From the
legislature of Oregon for harbor of
refuge at Port Orford; for an appro
priation for a lighthouse at the mouth
of the Umpqua river; asking aid for
a railroad from Roseburg to Coos
bay; asking for an increase of rates
for government surveys; asking for
an appropriation for improvement of
the Coquille river; asking a forfeit
ure of the land grant to the Oregon
Central railway; asking aid for re
pairs of the military road from Cres
ent City to The Dalles; asking pay
and pensions for Oregon volunteers
who served in the Rogue river war;
asking for the payment of a balance
on the territory of Oregon, expended
in the Rogue river war, and for a
grant of lauds to soldiers of that and
succeeding Indian wars; a memorial
from the Astoria chamber of com
merce asking for a forfe'ture ni the
Oregon Central railroad land grant:
a petition from citizens of Oregon
asking an appropriation for the im
provement of Coquille river, aud from
citizens of Oregon asking for improve
ment of the Umpqua river. George
also introduced a score of reliof bills.

nished. Enthusiastic Southern Dem
ocrats think he will 'make a capital
candidate for the presidency. So he
will to be beaten.
The Standard has discovered that
the New York Sun is not a Demo
cratic newspaper, and pathetically in
timates that Democracy is not respon
sible for that paper's utterance.
The Standard wants to know who
will be the next U. S. Senator from
Nevada. His name is Thomas "Wren,
he is a lawyer, he lives in Eureka,
and has a sack
