In tlio house of representatives last
Monday, Judge Paysou of Illinois,
introduced a bill declaring forfeitod
land grants of a large number of
roads, involving many millions of
acres of land. The names of roads
and amounts involved are as follows:
Texas Pacific. 15,000,000 acres, Cali
fornia, Arizona and New Mexico,
Gulf and Ship Island, Tuscaloosa and
Mobile, Mobile and New Orleans,
aggregating 1,000,000; Savannah and
Albany, involving 1,200,0000 acres;
Iron Mountain, Arkansas, 1,130,000
acres; Memphis and Charleston, 800,-
000 acres; Mobile and Girard, 483,000
acres; Outona and Slate Line, 142,-
000 acres; Oregon Central, 130,000
acres; Elyton and Beard's Bluff, 800.-
000 acres; Oregon and California, and
California and Oregon, unpatented
land, 4,108,000 acres; part of North
ern Pacific, from "NVallula to Port
land, 5,500,000 acres: New Orleans
and Jackson, 1,000,000 acres: Iron
Mountain, Missouri. uul,vw acres;
part of Atlantic and Pacific, east of
Albuquerque and west of Mojava, 15,
000,000 acres: involving title to 47,-
453,000 acres of the people's domain

rapidity with which towns are built
up in territories, was told the North
western Lumberman by a gentle
man who was looking around in Da
kota recently. He was present when
officials of the Chicago, Milwaukee &
St Paul road arrived at a point thir
ty miles north of Mitchell and planted
a town which they called AYoonsocket
At the time only one farm house was
standing m tue vicinity, and a car
was used as a depot This was on
Thursday, and on Saturday of the
same week there were twenty shanties,
a livery stable, two stores, a saloon, a
hotel, and three lumberyards. There
are men who have loaded lumber on
cars without knowing where it would
be unloaded, and then run it to the
first new town they hear of being
started. But it is not best to imagine
that all of the yards which arc estab
lished so suddenly in the new Dakota
towns have complete :is5ortments
or are models of neatness. A few
hundred feet of lumber thrown down
by the track constitutes a yard, which
grows and is pur into shape ;is the
town progresses.
The Weston Leader thinks that
the temperance question will soon
figure prominently in Oregon politics

cans, and yet. it is more than proba
ble that the Republican partv will be
the first one to espouse that cause
and thus secure the vote of the Dem
ocrats or that belieL If between
now and June the woman suffrage
sentiment should seem to grow in
favor with a majority of the people,
the Republican party may be expect
ed to have a big. broad woman suff
rage plank in its next plat
form. The benefits to accrue
from woman suffrage is mainly a
matter of conjectnre; that from pro
per temperance legislation is untoubt
ed and beneficial. But will the demo
cracy see it thus and act accordingly.
Pnor. ISluot of the Smithsonian
Institution says that while the Har
rison and Miller bills, providing a
civil government for Alaska, are both
simple and effective, he thinks Sena
tor Miller's bill is best, for the reason
that it provides for a judge, who will
receive $1,000 per annum, and who
will be governor ex-oflicio, and fonr
commissioners, who will act as mag
istrates, and who will receive SS00 per
annum. The criminal and civil laws
of Oregon are. adopted by Miller, and
all appeals from the judge are to be
taken to a United States Court judge
in Oregon. The Miller bill provides
also that the Oregon laws shall be
publthed in Russian as well as Eng
lish before they shall go into effect
Prof. Elliot thinks the Miller bill will
become a law before April
At Tumwater, "V. T., at a late elec
tion nearly every woman in the place
worked and voted and carried the
day. In other parts of the territory
women arc acting as jurors.

the presidency of the senate. It is
thought that Senator Anthonv, of
Rhode Island, will succeed him.
