On Thursday, the 20th inst., J. i. Gear

L. E. Selig has acquired citizenship at
Rugby's Hole, and says ho has some
choice lots in that town site. They are a

Scottish Hard went up stream; the Clan
Ferguson went to sea last Sunday.
Jos. Hume, agent of tho Knapplon
Packing company, arrived on yesterday's
steamer. He will, after January 1st.

Ben "Worsley got a telegram from H. S.
Godley of Independence, yesterday, ask
ing that his new purchase, the Astoria
hand fire engine be shipped at once. It
goes up to-morrow, sic transit gloria

Edward Ryan, a deck hand employed
-on tho Wonder, while going aboard at
Portland, last Saturday night, fell into
ihe river and was drowned before assist
ance could reach him. His brother wept
up from hero yesterday to make provis
ion for tho funeral.
Cloninger, who shot and killed young
Pierce at St. Helens last week, is reported
to be still at large. "Where is the sheriff
of Columbia county? The murderer
should be apprehended forthwith. No
community can afford to permit such
wanton violation of justice.
It was stated in The Abtobiax some
time ago that tho Queen was about to bo
withdrawn from the present route and
ply between San Francisco and- tho
Sound. It is now tho opinion that tho
change will take place about New Years.
This will put the Columbia traffic on the
old footing.
The new school house, in district No. 1,
is expected to bo ready for occupancy
next Monday. The seats are all in place,
tho blackboards, etc, prepared, and tho
eight rooms about ready for the recep
tion of the little folks. Tho building, ex
clusive of the basement, has a seating
.capacity of about 400. It is probable that
an additional teacher will be employed

It is reported that tho recent selling
out of the British Columbia Packing
Company's establishment at New "West
minister, B. C, to English & Co., was oc
casioned primarily by trouble in regard
to reclamations. It will soon be in order
for salmon packers to combine imd send
an agent to England there to reside and
keep his employers posted in regard to
this matter of reclamation. It will be
money in their pockets.
Mention was made 'last week of the
probable sailing of tho schooner Martha
IV. Tufts for this port from San Fran
cisco to encage in the Gray's Harbor
trade. At the last moment the parties
refused to sign the charter, and the new
schooner Gen. Banning was chartered
instead. She is a new vessel, larger than
the one which was originally proposed to
bring up, and sails from San Francisco

A New Captain. On the Columbia yes
terday arrived Capt. Norcross and wife.
Capt. Norcross is quarter owner of the
American ship Highland Light, now lying
at Kinney's dock, and will immediately
assume command of that vessel. Capt.

TO-MORROTPS ELECTION.
The Candidates and the Offices.
The numerous meetings, nominations,
ratifications, etc., of tho past week have
resulted in placing before the citizens of
Astoria the names of J. "W. Hume and D.
Morgan, Jr., for the office of mayor.
Both these gentlemen are well-known
and are prominently identified with the
salmon canning business. Both have
warm personal friends and determined
adherents, who aro working to insure the
election of their candidate. For coun
cilman from the First ward wo have
offered us tho names of A. A. Cleveland
and L Bergman. From tho Second ward,
Thos. Dealy and T. A. Orcutt. In con
nection with the office of councilman it
may bo said, in passing, that as much
depends upon the election of "a good
man" as councilman as depends upon the
election of a mayor. In the opinion of
many, the position of councilman inti
mately affects the prosperity of the city
to a greater degree than any other office
in the municipality. That such is the
case the history of the city abundantly
proves.
Though it happens that u majprity of
the candidates presented are Democrats,
yet it has been tacitly agreed that poli
tics should not in any way enter into this
contest, and it is just as well that it is so.
Party lines have never been strictly
drawn in city elections in As
toria, the public good being
held paramount to other considerations.
In the contest which closes to-morrow
there has been a good deal of earnest
intent and a good deal of by-play. In
general it may be said that individual
preference will have a good deal to do in
determining the result of to-morrow's
election. Then, there are also a good
many who, when thinking over election
matters, very naturally ask themselves:
'How is this going to affect my inter
ests?" and in that case the vote goes
with the belief as to how the individual's
interests are to bo affected.
Another factor in determining the re
sult is the stand taken by the candidates
themselves. From Mr. "Hume we have
the published assurance that ho is in ev
erv way unpledged.
There is not a great deal of official pat
lonage to bo dispsnsed by the mayor of
Astoria; the city attorney gets $1,000 a
year; the street suixirinteudent, $900; tho
auditor and clerk, $9C0; the chief of
police, $1,200; the police judge. $000;
the city treasurer, about $1,000; tho city
Barton, about $800; in all something leas
than $7,000. He appoints and the coun
cil confirms; the councilmen holding
over this year are Messrs. Case, Cooper,
Carruthers and Trenchard. Mr. Car
ruthcrs' removal to another ward will ne
cessitate the filling of his place for the
unexpired term by vote of the council.
ASTORIA TIME.
In accordance "with an agreement made
between the several railroad managers it
has been decided to change the city and
railroad time in Portland to conform to
the new standard, taken from tho 120th
meridian. Tho change will bo made
there at noon next Sunday. The railroad
and city clocks will all bo set ahead ten
minutes and fifty seconds, thus making
Portlnnd time that much faster than it
now is.
In Astoria no change will be made, at
least not at present. Probably when we
succeed in getting the railroad built to
Forest Grove, and another railroad is
running down the coast, we may take into
consideration the matter of changing
regulation time, but for the present the
time in Astoria will be in accordance
with existing systems. Mr. Louis Wil
son, well known as the most skillful ad
juster of chronometers in tho Northwest,

these observations in the future? ub for
manv vears in the nast. Astoria time
will be determined. Up to the present
time Astoria stanaara nine nas oeen nvo
minutes and twelve seconds slower
than Portland standard time. Ac
cording to the new regulations,
which go into effect in Portland next
Sunday, Portland time will be sixteen
minutes nnd two seconds faster than
Astoria time.
Board of Fire Delegates.
At a meeting of the Board of Delegates
of the A.F. D., held at tho parlors of
Rescue No. 2. last evening, C. "W. Fulton
presiding, present, B. S. "Worsley, secre
tary. C. H. Stockton, C. J. Trenchard,
E. D. Curtis. The credentials of
Messrs. Thomas, Grant and Stone
were presented and accepted. Com
munications from tho various com
panies were read and referred to appro

board, received and accepted. The board
proceeded to elect a treasurer. J. E.

meeting was held at Dr. LaForce's rooms
last evening, at which T. F. Meade was
elected president, and Dr. J. LaForce

tion. D. Morgan, Jr., was endorsed as
candidate for mayor, and I. Bergman as
candidate for councilman for the first
ward, and tho meeting adjourned.
Sometime. The San Francisco Com
7ncrcial Herald is a most reliable paper,
but in the last number to hand there is
an item in reference to Astoria which is
a little premature. It says that a wire
cable road is being constructed here and
that the wire has already arrived. In
the near future, doubtless, our California
contemporary's item will be correct. The

be running between the Columbia and
Young's nver city fronts, and between
Alderbrook and the western suburbs of
the city. The only cable road that has
so far 'been constructed at Astoria has
been a lightning road from here to the
uape upon which the royal messenger
speeds with news.

Soraethlnc Adequate to the City's Seeds.
It became evident to those who paid at
tention to tho subject last summer that
the present system of fire alarm in this
city, while good of its kind, is not up to
the demands of our growing city. Ac
cordingly, a movement was set on foot to
raise enough money to put into opera
tion a complete electric fire alarm that
would indicate promptly and with uner
ring certainty tho location of a fire. B.
S. Worsley started out with a subscrip
tion paper and succeeded in raising
$1000. It being worth doing well, it was
thought that that amount, though it
would buy a good alarm, would not fur
nish tho best. As the Gamewell svstem
is considered to have no superior, it was
decided that that should, if possible, be
procured, at an expense of $1000, and a
petition was accordingly presented to
the city council asking that honorable
body to appropriate the sum needed to
make up that amount.
It was understood that whatever sum
was received from the sale of the old
hand engine should be turned over to the
fund, and it has been so done.
Yesterday afternoon B. S. Worslev.
who has taken a very active part in the
matter from the outset, -telegraphed to
P. Siler logo ahead and ship a port ion of
iue material, consisting oi iour mnea oi
wire, insulators, brackets, batteries,
boxes, cone. etc. The whole business
will be in place by tho 15th of January,
1S84, and after that date it is confidently
expected that Astoria will have a system
of electric fire- alarm that will ne in
every way satisfactory.
Foreign Salsa on Report.
The salmon market is unchanged in
value, but demand throughout tho week
has been extremely slow. The shipments
to this country from Astoria up to the
lith ult., were 189,915 cases, against 334,-
023 cases to the same dato last year, 234,
003 cases in 1631, 188,992 cases in 1830,
and 183,745 cases in 1879. Our market
continues quiet, but the country demand,
though not brisk, is steady, and is ratner
better than at tho corresponding period
last year; prices are as last week, but
with a tendency in favor of buyers.
There is a disposition on the part ol ship
pers to enect sales lorward, out buyers'
ideas and theirs aro much apart, and no
sales of any magnitude have come to our
knowledge. The following statistics we
believe are authentic, nnd will servo to
compare the pack and shipments of the
past two seasons, showing a deficit of the
former of 82,800 cases, and of the latter,
until the 15th ult., of 225.455 cases:
Total pack, including all rivers (cases),
in 1882, 1,052500; 1833, 970,000; ship
ments from Victoria, B. C, from June
1st until October 10th, 1832, 135,823: 18S3,
52,360; shipments from San Francisco
and Astoria during same period, 1882,
355,890; 1833, 214500; total, 1832, 491,715;
1883, 29GG0.
The consumption of salmon is steady,
and the stocks of old produce are becom
ing rapidly reduced. The cold weather
does not seriously interfere with the de
mand for salmon, which is always ac
ceptable when of good quality. This
season's catch is lncreasetl as regards
Columbia river fish, but is much less as
regards the other rivers, and it is hoped,
therefore, that tho quality of fish will
much increase the volume of business
during the present season. If the general
quality of last season's salmon had been
finer, it is probablo that stocks would
now have been cleared out. Liverpool
