The matter of electric fire alarm for the
city is still in abeyance. Tho question
comes up before the city council at its

in connection with the nomination for
mayor may be named J. "W. Hume and

last night, the extreme smallness of the

The managers of tho Bescuo Jubilee
troupe report that their Thanksgiving
entertainment was a financial success,
the not receipts being about $150. Tho
next move will be lo got up a first-class
dramatic entertainment for New Year's
night. Tho idea is to got an A 1, stoutly
built, nickle-plated, two wheeled hose
cart for i's eugino compaivy, juid as the
cart will cost about 500 when here it
will be seen that about 350 more re
mains to be raised. This tho boys pro
pose to get with tho further generous
assistance of those who appreciate im
provement.

Antwcrj) and Harry Bailey have cleared
for Queonstown, tho former with 59,251
bushols wheat worth G1,G23; the latter
with 37.89G bushels worth 38,081.

beautiful sunsets lately observed at diff
erent points along, the coast, it is sup
posed that these are in part, caused by
particles of ashes coming from an Alas
kan volcano. These are carried in tho
upper currents of tho air, and form, as
ii were, a canopj-. in tue ordinary po
sition the sunlight passes through this
stratum without oroducine a visible
effect; but when the light is below tho
stratum, as at sunrise or sunset, and the
rays strike the under surface of tho ash
laden current, the solid particles form an

my men with tho exception of a few that
I keep all tho year round. It is not like
ly that I will begain again until April or

"How is the supply:" "Fully equal to
the present demand. I don't know how
it is going to be next spring, but take it
altogether there hasn't been much
money in the business this season. Last
spring logs here and on the Sound went
away up, in one instance that I know of
they brought 8.50, but then came a
tumble, and if a logger can get G n
thousand now he is lucky. It is an ex
pensive pieco of business to run a log
ging camp the way everything sells now.
Meat and provisions of all lands are high
and havo been all along, supplies have
advanced greatly in price, and labor,
especially during the past season has
been very hign. In fact the receipts go
for expenses. Some think that tho great
number of people that are coming in now
may occasion tho price of labor to come
down. It may in some cases, but in a
logging camp a poor worker is dear for
his board, and a man that understands
what to do and how to do it can alwaj-s
get big wages. It looks big, I know to
pay a teamster 100 or $LJ0 a month and
grub, but I tell you tho man earns it, and
if ho uoesu t understand what he's at no
dosn't have a chance to earn it very
long."

You havo got to go further nnd further
up the river every year, and of course it
costs more to get the timber out."
'Don't you think," was asked'that tho
building of the Astoria-Forest Grove
railroad would be a good thing for the
lumbering interests?" "Yes," he an
swered, it would be a big thing for tho
town and for those who could build a
good big mill and ship lumber away.
The tract of timber land south of hero
that hasn't been touched is full of such
timber as tho world needs and if a rail
road ran through the Nehalem it could
have it."

CONNECTING THE THREE BATS.
The
Ilnaco, Slioalirater and Gray's Barber
Railroad.
L. A. Loom is informs us that the ar
ticles of incorporation of the Ilwaco,
Shoalwater and Gray's Harbor railroad,
have been filed, and the stock books of
the company opened. The incorporators
aro L. A. Looniis, H. S. Gile and B. A.
Seaborg of Pacific County, L "W. Case, of
this city, and Jacob Kanim, of Portland.
Tho capital stock of tho company is
one hundred thousand dollars, divided
into ono thousand shares at the par value
of one hundred dollars each. Tho com
pany was incorporated on the :25th nil.,
and considerable stock has already been
taken. The intention is to construct and
equip a narrow guage railroad from Ilwa
co to Shoalwater Bay, at Oysterville or a
point near there, and from there to Shaf
fers Island at Gray's Harbor. The route
has already been viewed, and a good
roadway determined upon. Work will
be begun as eoon as practicable. Tho ad
vantage of this road to Astoria is mani
fest. For tho last eighteen months there
has been an enormous immigration to
Pacific nnd Chebalis counties, particular
ly the latter county. The people that
have goiio in there are largely home seek
ers. They have taken land hud propose
to stay; they are but as the first wash of
tho waves that soon shall roll n human
sea. That rich country across the river
is, as The Astobian minted oat two years
t'go destined to bo populous. The ques
tion of purchase, of trade is one that in
terests every business man in As
toria. The trade of that county
will naturally go whoro the great
est inducf-ments take it. The roundabout
method of shipjiug goods from Port
land by way of Portland is costly and
cumbersome. Tho shipment of freight
from San Francisco is equally irksome to
those people. There exists no reason
why Astoria should not obtain and hold
that trade. The building ot tue pro-

The endeavor to make a uniform time
standard throughout the country gives
especial interest just now to another pro
posed change, which has frequently here
tofore been suggested. It is that of num
bering all the hours of the day up to
twenty-four consecutively, instead of
using the "A. M." and "P. M.," as has
always been tho custom. One of tho
western railroads has recently adopted
this system and issued time cards on tho
twenty-four hour plan, counting the day
to end and begin at midnight, which, it
is said, havo been used with great satis
faction by the employes nnd the public.

as buyers aro only providing themselves
with, stocks required for present needs.
Tho merchants generally nro only spar
ingly stocked, and they are in no hurry
to replenish their stores, though wo see

tendency on the part of buyers to se
cure entire brands, and then ran them
in as specialties, and secure higher
