The annual recurrence of the day on which Americans by common cdn sent unite in thanks to the Creator of all good, finds on this November day many reasons to be thankfuL In a national sense it is good and pleasant to feel that sixty million American citizens have a Thanksgiving day, and have, as a nation, abundant cause for thanks. In arts and sciences, in pro gress and intelligence, in the victo ries that peace achieves, we lead in triumph. Locally, we of this genial northwest have cause for thanks and gratulation; no storms whelm, no cold overcomes, no disaster car ries sorrow to any gather ing of homes, there is work for the industrious; a competence for the thrifty, and an abundance for those that seek it As a community we have no less reason for thanks that our share of the common prosperity is an assured one, and that no dis aster marks in sorrow the year; as in dividuals we all have doubtless rea sous for feeling thankful for dangers averted, for troubles passed away, for griefs that time's hand assuages, and for blessings that brightening as they vauished gave promises of peace and inward quiet for the heart As Americans we have not holidays enough; we all live in too much of a bustle and worry that begets a fever ish haste to get on regardless of the plainest requirements of life's func tions. As a sanitary regulation it wore better for the American people that holidays came oftener, and were generally observed when thoy did come. In its religious aspect, the observance of to-day is peculiarly fit ting and appropriate, Differ as we may on minor points of doctrine and belief, yet, "one touch of nature makos the whole world kin," and the fitness of devoting one day in the twelve months to the praise and serv ice of Him "who doeth all things well'' is recognized by all creeds and climes as meet and proper. Tun Walla Walla Union is arguing in favor of division of Washington Territory, but its arguments in that direction don't seem to be any better indorsed than the arguments of the same paper some time ago in favor of shipping wheat to Puget Sound. To divide Washington Territory would be a great mistake, though if it were divided the western part of the Terri tory would have the best of the bargain. I'odkteex thousand witnesses have been supoenaed to testify in a csise at Buda Pesth. in Hungary. This is worse than the present trial in Port land. Ax Ohio judge has decided that it is not "disorderly conduct" to hurrah over the election of candidates. HORN'. Iii Astoria, Nov. 28. to the wife of mollis Kirchhoir, a daughter. .tIAKKIKI.
