"My dear sir," retorted tho gentleman,

A thrilling scene occurred at the
opera house at Montgomery, night
lefore last, at the close of Mr.Beech
618 lecture. The paper there has
been very abusive of Mr. Beecher,
nnd it is said tho editor gave instruc
tions that nothing favorable to him
should be printed. AVhen he con
cluded bi3 regular lecture, he said he
had something to say as a matter of
personal privilege. Ho had been as
sailed and denounced. He gave a
short review of his career, dwelling
upon tho fact that he had always op
posed oppression and had favored
freedom. He grew eloquent over his
course against slavery, but said that
since war he had been a friend to
North and South alike, and that the
man who said he had never uttered
one word against either section was

A German paper explains the origin
of tho name ".Kalamazoo ' by declar
ing that the first settler m the place
was a Crennan; that he bad a son
named Karl: that he kept a saloon,
which he closed lawfully at 9 o'clock
every night, his injunction to his son
being regularly made at mat nour in
these words: "'Karl, inacht ziif Tho
Indians took note of these words and
didn't like them, as they shut off the
supply of whisky, liiko All iiaba m
the "Jj orty Thieves, tbey tried to get
the "open sesame" of the place. The
nearest they could come to it was
"K'lama'zu," and whenever they spoke
of tho .location of tho enterprising
German's saloon the)' referred to it
and him as "Old Kn'Jama'zu." In
due time tho name, with the modern
spelling, Kalamazoo, came as a mat

There is being made a new effort to
put Secretary Lincoln to the front as
a candidate for vice-president The
only reason for it is that ho is the son
of his father. This is poor reason
in fact, it is a dangerous reason. If
we nominate men because of their
family name, we establish the founda
tion for an aristocracy. If Mr. Lin
coln, as he is, bore the name of Smith
or "VVilkins, no one would dream of
putting him on a national ticlwt
nor, indeed, would he, with his abil
ity as now made manifest, have been
in tho cabinet at alL He is a very
good officer, a very worth) man, but
has done nothing, has shown no abil
ity that should make him any moro
prominent than thousands of other
worthy but not brilliant or wonder
fully wiso citizens.
