The annual report of the Oregon
Railway and Navigation Company
shows the total expense account for
the year to be about S3,000,000. The
surplus profits lor the same, time are
set down at a little less than $300,000.
The year's receipts were $11,000,000;
the years disbursements a little over
$10,000,000. The assets 'are set at
something over $23,000,000.
The O. JL & N. Co.'s stock is the
only one of the Yillard stocks that
sells at par; it is the only one that is
looked upon as a present paying in
vestment.
The history of the formation of the
company is as interesting as anything
of the kind in the record of financial
operations, and is illustrative of
Henry Yillard's genius for producing
desired results.
In 1879 the Oregon Steam Naviga
tion company and tho Oregon Steam
ship company occupied the same rela
tion to the northwest coast that the
O. E. & N. Go. now does. Yillard ob
tained possession of the first-named
company by buying from J. O. Ains-
ivorth and others forty thousand of
the fifty thousand shares of stock at
a price which may be stated at two
and a-quarter million dollars. Five
years previous Mr. Yillard, who was
at the time managing tho affairs ot
the O. & O. railroad, had been given
by tlie creditors of that, then insol
vent corporation, a controlling inter
est in the Oregon Steamship company
in consideration of his relinquish
ment of the interest that his peculiar
genius had enabled him to gain in the
railroad.
So that the controlling interest in
tho two companies had not cost "Mr.
Yillard and friends a great deal of
money. He then made up his famous
combination, and organizing the Ore
gon Bailway and Navigation com
pany by consolidating the two old
companies, he, in 1SS0, floated $12,
000.000 of slock and bonds of the new
company. The stock went away
above and beyond par: was consid
orod a good buy, and it was not long
till $j,009,000 more went on the mar
ket and was promptly taken. Again an
additional amount oi stock went out,
until at the prest-al time it is calcu
lated that there is afloat some $24)00
000 in stock and bonds of this corpo
ration. Acccordmg to the report
just made public this is a little less
than one million dollars more than
what the company's property is said
to be worth, though as to the ques
tiou ot value, it is thought by some
that to duplicate the property ot the
company would not require anything
like that amount.
A Washington special says that
Congressman Payson of Illinois, at
the coming session of Congress, will
early introduce a bill to forfeit the
Texas Pacific land grant The tele
gram goes gn to declare fnrther that
he will also ask Congress to forfeit
the grant now claimed by the North
orn Pacific in Oregon. Tho Shij:
Island railroad in Mississippi has
several million acres of valuable pine
lands, hold by a forfeited land grant
Proceedings against this road will
also be pushed by Payson. Along the
line of the Southern Pacific are

condition of Pacific roads.

Americanism simply, and such it
nevor has been; and it belongs to us,
not because we live so much further
to the west than most others of the
people who are civilized, or pretend
to be so, but in virtue of our humau
ity Retirement is as easy a thing to
have in America as it is elsewhere, by
which we mean, not that it is a thing
of course anywhere, but that it must
be paid for, no matter in what
land, .or under -what eky, the
lover of silence and quiet
and the avoid er of noise and bustle
and confusion, may dwell. Every
thing else being bought and solckwhy
should not freedom from disturbance
bring its just price in that market
which we call the world? That price
need not"be stated either in silver or
in gold, in greenbacks or in brown
bticks.
