It is reported that the line of railroad
recently built from Portland westward
along the south bank of tho Columbia is
not in an active state of business.
The room over Frank Parker's grocery
tore has been rented by parties who are
placing material there, with the inten
tion, it is said, of issuing a newspaper.
A fleet of wood scows is at Gray's dock,
some discharging cargoes from Young's
river and other ports: others compelled
hy stress of weather to seek the seclusion
that the lee shore grants.
Tho Ice King has been chartered to
load salmon at Astoria. She will tako on
about n0,000 cases, four-fifths of which
will bo loaded by Geo. W. Hume. Tho
Tessol was chartered by A. "W. Berry, and
will load direct for London.
At a meeting of tho Astoria chamber of
commerce last evening it was voted that
h memorial be sent to congreas asking
that the Astoria land grant bo forfeited,
and that a bill to that effect be prepared
nnd transmitted to each niomber of that
lody.
Tho Swedish bark Virgo changes the
usual port of clearance from Astoria by
going to Calais, France. Tb.6 good ship
Highland Light lies snugly bestowed at
Kinney's dock. She arrived in on No
vember 22, 1882. Tho Cailloch has clear
ed for Queenstown, with C72GS bushels
wheat, worth $08,700.
A company is being incorporated to
build a narrow gauge railroad from Ba
ker's bay to Gray's harbor by Shoalwaler
bay. It would be singular if Astoria's
first railroad communication should come
from Washington Territory, but it looks
very much that way as the new enter
prise is in the hands'of men that are in
tho habit of making a success of what
ever they undertake.

around and over you, and tho whales
come up on the beach into your arms, as

Wanted Beef. "Jeff" csually keeps

tem has its disadvantages. Of late

Ladder Company will have a meeting

question of providing new apparatus

piate means to work with, the present
appliances being somewhat ancient and

ity will have an opportunity to afford as

on the Shubrick, was afterwards in tho

His death will be learned with regret by

ticket agent of tho Central Pacific rail
road company, is in Portland. He stated
to a representative of tho Standard that
in accordance with tho decision of tho
railroad convention, held at Topoka,
Kansas, a short time since, the compe
ting roads would not encroach on each
other's territory, ho had come up to re
move all tno agents and undo all tho
arrangements he had made on his previ
ous visit about a month ago. By the
arraneenients spoken of it was under
stood that the Central Pacific intended to
compete with tho Northern Pacific in
carrvinc passengers, etc. between Port
land and points east, and that the North
ern Jracinc would do likewise from tho
east to San FranciBco. As has already
been stated by telegraph these arrange
ments have fallen through, and his visit
corroborates tne lact.
