Tho Portland News is reported to be attached for a debt of 3,700. Tho Santa Cruz got out at noon yester day. Tho Oregon sails this morning. Capt. Alexander is in San Diego, Cal., nnd is reported to l3 much improved in health. The British bark Jancl McNiel,85Q, Jonas, master, 1G0 days from Glasgow, is reported outside. John "Wood lias boon appointed in spector of lumber for the First Washing ton Territory district. The American wooden bark C. D. Jiryant has been chartered nt i0s to load lumber on the Sound for the western South American coast. It is reported that the line of railroad recently built from Portland westward along the south bank of tho Columbia is not in an active state of business. The room over Frank Parker's grocery tore has been rented by parties who are placing material there, with the inten tion, it is said, of issuing a newspaper. A fleet of wood scows is at Gray's dock, some discharging cargoes from Young's river and other ports: others compelled hy stress of weather to seek the seclusion that the lee shore grants. Tho Ice King has been chartered to load salmon at Astoria. She will tako on about n0,000 cases, four-fifths of which will bo loaded by Geo. W. Hume. Tho Tessol was chartered by A. "W. Berry, and will load direct for London. At a meeting of tho Astoria chamber of commerce last evening it was voted that h memorial be sent to congreas asking that the Astoria land grant bo forfeited, and that a bill to that effect be prepared nnd transmitted to each niomber of that lody. Tho Swedish bark Virgo changes the usual port of clearance from Astoria by going to Calais, France. Tb.6 good ship Highland Light lies snugly bestowed at Kinney's dock. She arrived in on No vember 22, 1882. Tho Cailloch has clear ed for Queenstown, with C72GS bushels wheat, worth $08,700. A company is being incorporated to build a narrow gauge railroad from Ba ker's bay to Gray's harbor by Shoalwaler bay. It would be singular if Astoria's first railroad communication should come from Washington Territory, but it looks very much that way as the new enter prise is in the hands'of men that are in tho habit of making a success of what ever they undertake. State Noemal Sonoou Ono hundred :and sixty-eight students havo been en rolled at the Oregon State Normal School at Monmouth during the first term, which closes to-morrow. The second iterm will open next Monday. Seattle's FisnJ Sutplt. Tho variety of fish in the market, is at this season of the year greater than any other, and is a constant source of wonderment and at traction to passers by. The salmon are almost out of season. This gentleman, on arriving in the city, honored the Inter. later run of salmonaro a larger variety of b bt lear interesting points relative u nis eariy experiences m yre- fish than those before tbem. The sever al varieties of pan fish are now abundant, and can bo obtained any day in any quantity to suit. Flounders aro in full supply; also rock cod, black bass, and other varieties of food fish. And not only these are to be seen every day, but a great number of other fish not general ly considered so desirable for the tabic. gon, only a few of which can bo given here. Mr. Grav went to the Pacific coast in 1835. He went from Utica, N. Y., and was a native of Herkimer county. Tho party he went overland with was made up of Dr. "Whitman and "wife, and the Kev. Skates arc caught by the of Oregon, the oldest being a man who dozen, and sometimes sold. A variety of yfeat & Oregon in 1834 with the Bev. eels are sometimes seen, as also tho rat fish, an ugly. b:g-eyed creature that, though small, is almost terrifying to be hold. There is hardly a day that twenty varities of fish cannot lx seen at differ ent stands, whHo tbe quantity caught for town salo cannot be far from u ton weight every day. Posl-Jntclligencer. Frvc Dollars roa a Lor is Pasauisk. A crowd was gathered on the sidewalk on Morrison street, between First and Second, j-esterday afternoon, attracted by a large map of the south addition to Ocean Park, lots in which were boing offered for sale by tho fragile lticbardson. He was setting forth tho attractions of tho place in fine style. 'Buy a lot, gen tlemen; take your tout and go down there and recuperate. You can find all the clams, crabs, lobfcters, oysters and big razor clams right at your door. By inert ly throwing your line in the wator on either side of your t?nt you can catch all the codfish, mackerol, shad, halibut, carp and sturgeon your want . All 3'ou need to tako with you is a piece of fat pork. In fact, gontionien. the plaoe is a perfect paradise on earth. You have everything in tho animal line from a sand ilea to a whale within reach. The ihxis cluster around and over you, and tho whales come up on the beach into your arms, as it were. It makes me blublr to think of it. Gentlemen, how much 'm offered for those lots." "Five dollars" said a man in the crowd. A cold chill seemed to sweep over the assembly nt tho audacity of tho man, but business is business, and some scores of lots were sold at prices ranging from $3 to $15. The purchasers are now looking around for tents and tho pieces of fat pork. Oregonian. Jason Lee's party. Dr. Whitman, his wife, and a number of others were killed in thp "Whitman massacre, in December, &ti. A meet ing of tho Northern Pacific preferred stockholders to Tote on tho proposition to issue a $20,000,000 second mortgage loan was held in New York last Tuesday, in which 352,428 shares voted for tho loan, nnd sixty-three against. It is thought this will settle any question in relation in ViUfirfl's retnininp nossession of the presidency of tho N. P. company. As ?Ar hr ihin Northwest ecast is concerned it will certainly have tho effect of plac ing a little more monevin circulation than has been for tho last three or four months. Wanted Beef. "Jeff" csually keeps goodly display of good things in front of his restaurant as an outward sign of in ward nourishment, but he thinks the sys tem has its disadvantages. Of late nlnmn ducks and juicy joints have been most unaccountably missing, but at an early hour yesterday morning Ins pa tience gave way when a hungry individ ual whoso ideas on the acquiring of prop erty aro evidently vague, walked off with u 150-pound quarter of beef. Three soft wood ships wero chartered u fow days ago at the equivalent of YAjz bd direct to .Liverpool, but it is claimed that on a low wheat market the carco on a soft wood ship is rated at Is to Is Gd below a cargo on a hard wood ship, all other thmns beinn equal.
