That's a common expres

meaning. How much suf

The singular thing about
it is, that pain in the back
is occasioned by so many
things. May be caused by
kidney disease, liver com
plaint, consumption, cold,
nervous debility, &c.
Whatever the cause, don't,
neglect it Something is
wrong and needs prompt
attention. No medicine has
yet been discovered that
will so quickly and surely
cure such diseases as
Brown's Iron Bitters, and
it does this by commencing
at the foundation, and mak
ing the blood pure and rich.
Wm. P. Marshall, of Logans
port,lndiana,'.vrites: "My wife
has for many years been trou-;
bled from pain in her back
and general debility incident
to her sex. She Las taken one
bottle of Brown's Iron Bitters,
and I can truthfully say that
she has been so much benefited
that she pronounces it the
only remedy of many medi
cines she .has tried."
Leading physicians and
clergymen use and recom
mend Brown's Iron Bit
ters. It has cured others
suffering as you are, and it
will cure you.'

Farmer Hays "Won a Horse
With His Bull.
Bace
This locality, originally known as
Hedsione, notv Brownsville, some six
ty years ago, was the scene of a most
comical occurence, which is related
by an old resident of Eedstone who
witnessed tho scene. At the period
preferred to, the managers of a horse
race track published a notice 01 a
mile heat race on a particular day
"free for anything with three legs
that bad hair on," for apnrse of $100.
A. farmer in the neighborhood, nained
Hays, had a bull he was in the habit
of riding to mill with his bag or corn.
and the idea occurred to him of
entering his bull for the race. He
said nothing to any one of his inten
tion to enter the bull for the race,
but quietly commenced training the
bull by riding him around the race
track on moonlight nights, in this
manner he trained the bull until he
got the hang of the track pretty well
and would keep on the right course.
He rode- the bull with spurs and when
the spurs were applied to the bull he
would bellow frightfully.
On tho dav of the race Hays rotle
to the race ground "on horseback"
on his bulL Bistead of a saddle he
had a dried ox-hide, the head part of
which, with the horns still on, he had
placed on the bull's rump and in
stead of a whip he carried a tin horn
in his hand. He rode to the judges7
stand and offered to enter his bull
for the race, but the owners of the
horses entered objected to the bull's
entrance. Hays appealed to the
terms of notice," insisting that his bull
had '"four legs and hair on." and
therefore he had a right to enter his
bull." After a good deal of "enssin' "
on the part of the horse owners and
considerable "fussin' " on the part of
the judges, it was decided that the
bull had a right to run, anil was
accordingly entered.
"When tho time for starting arrived
the bull and horses took their places.
The horsemen were out of humor at be
ing bothered with the bull and at
the burlesque which they supposed
was intended, but thought it would
all be over as soon as tne horses
started. "When the signal was given
Hays gave a blast with his horn and
sunk his spurs into the side of the
bull, which bounded off with a terri
ble bound, and the dried ox-hide,
flapping up and down and rattling at
every jump, made such a combination
of noises as was never before heard
on a horso race course. The horse
all immediately flew the track, every
one seeming to be seized with a sud
den determination to take the short
est cut out of tho Eedstone country,
and none of them could be brought
back in time to save their distance.
The puree was to Hays, whose bull
had run around, the course, and
great deal of swearing was done by
the horseowners. They contended
that thov had been swindled out of tho
purse, and that if it hadn't been fo
Hays's horn and ox-hide the thing
wouldn t have turned out as it did.
Had not the fun of the thing put the
crowd m a good humor and all on tho
side of the bull, a general row would
have ensued.
Hays told the indignant horsemen
that his bull could beat either of
their horses any way, and if they
would put up $100 against the purse
he had won he would take oil the ox
hide, throw awav his tin horn and
run a fair race with them, which
proposition was eagerly and prompt
ly accepted and the money slaked.
The bidl and the horses were again
at their starting post m their places,
readv for the word co. and the mom
ent the signal was given Hays gave
the bull a touch of his spurs, and the
bull gave a tremendous bellow. The
horses, remembering tho dreadfid
sound, thought all tho rest was com
ing as before, and away they went
again, in spite of all the exertions of
their riders, whilo Jaaj's galloped his
bull around tho track and won .the
money. Jiroicnsville Pa., Corr.
