Hcthods of Tctius Boilers.
It is alleged that the shock of forc
ing "ratcr into a boiler by means of a
pump is equal in it3 effects to a suc
cession of blows -which may injure the
shell. As every strain put upon the
boiler decreases the final strain nec
essary to produce rupture, it is rea
sonable to presume that such a
method of testing may so injnre the
parts that they will finally give way
under a pressnrc much less than that
at which the boiler was tested A
plan that obviates this is to fill the
boiler with cold water and gradually
raise the pressure to tho desired point
by a slow lire. Still another method
is" to fill the boiler with hot water and
then apply the desired pressure by
the aid of an injector mado for the
purpose, which continues to add heat
ed water to the boiler, A relief valve
is set to open at the desired pressure,
and tho duly of the injector is to
maintain that pressure, uninfluenced
by any leaks, for a given time. A uni
form pressuro is insured throughout
the boiler.
