ASTORIA, OREGON:
TUESDAY.
..NOVEMBER 13. 18S3
A" OUTSIDE OPINIO.
Talking of transportation the Oregon
Vidette says: If tbe Columbia liver
is opened by free government canals
at the Cascades and The Dalles, and
the canal at Oregon City made free,
then the produce of these great val
leys can be reached by competing
steamboats, and the barge can float
the crops of both valleys all the way
to Astoria at a dollar per ton, instead
of the five and ten dollars now exact
ed by the railroad monopoly. There
fore the exertions of the Stale should
be pnt forth to secure these free can
als. Lot the government appropria
tions be concentrated on the canals
at the Cascades and The Dalles, and
upon improvements of the Columbia
bar, while the State should at the
earliest possible period condemn to
public use, at a fair valuation, the
canal at Oregon City. Portland will
not like this programme, but that
citv ought not to be allowed to any
longer dictate the commercial policy
of the State. Its Board of Trade and
wealthy citizens have all surrendered
their rights and opinions to the lead
ership of Henry Tillard, and lie is at
work to build up Puget Sonnd and
not Oregon. The fanners, producers,
and interior merchants must now
make common cause with Astoria to
make that the shipping point for
Oregon. Let us waste no more efforts
to get money to dig out a canal to let
ocean ships ascend one hundred
miles above Astoria. Secure first, a
crood entrance over the bar to Astoria,
then open these canals to free navi
gation, and after that let each town
and city lake care of its own local
interests.
Ant hope that the Pacific coast may
have entertained concerning probable
railroad competition, is doomed to
disappointment. The managers have
agreed to make all they can and di
vide the territory, each company
cinching the public all it can in its
own bailiwick. The Central Pacific
people have bribed Yillard by a bonus
of a yearly half million dollars on
San Francisco business to "keep off,
and as far as lower rates are con
cerned they are deferred to future
possibility.
A new phase of the salmon sup
ply is developed by the recent arrival
at London of a Hudson Bay com
pany's steamer at Labador with thir
ty-five tons of frozen salmon aboard.
"What the condition of the salmon
was aflor being thoroughly thawed is
not stated.
