CO Vol. xx. Astoria, Oregon, Sunday Morning, November 4, 1883 No. 30. THE PIONEERS. The two hundred Oregon pion eers, the youngest of them a settler of 1S54, who have just arrived in New York on an excursion, could tell some wonderful stories ol pro gress, heroism and trial. Turning their faces toward the setting sun in the days when the star of cm pire shone but very dimly in the west, they have lived to see stately cities grow up where they corraled their wagon trains on a pathless prairie, to see railroad tracks along their old trail, art and culture where they fought with painted savages, and populous industry where they found a wilderness. More honor should be paid to them than to haughty lord or be wigged justice from across the At lantic. They are the men who have planted new stars in our flag, sown the seeds of civilization, re finement and liberty, and watched and guarded their work till the perfiaps, the magnitude of their work through the danger, privation and discomfort, they toiled on, and the whole. land has shared in their reward. K&cark Kcvx. Several instances of applying the mad stone to poisonous snake bites have been reported by the newspapers recently, and the testimony of tho patients is that in every case the stone has ab sorbed the poison. It is a popu lar belief in the south and the west that a person who possesses one of these stones is armed against all venomous creatures; but the savants agree that the madstone is nothing more than the concretion found in the stom ach of the deer, and that it has no medical properties whatever. Prof. Holmes, the Atlanta Covslitulioji says, dissected one the size df a hen's egg, and found its nucleus to be a perfect white oak acorn. It was covered by four layers of phosphates and carbonate of lime and iron and some silex. There were two impressions, apparently made by the teeth of the deer be fore swallowing the nut. Acorns are a favorite food of Carolina deer. In another specimen Prof. Holmes found the nucleus to be a bullet. E. J. Smith, the count3r coroner, says the Tucson (Arizona) Citizen, has four gold fish hooks that he unearthed in the South American placers. He was mining in a river bed near the city of Call, in the state of Cauca, United States of Columbia, in 18GG, when he pulled up a small tree by the roots and there in the sand lay an even baker's dozen of regularly shaped gold fish hooks of the ordinary size. They are not bent in the Limerick fashion. "Without doubt they are the work of prehistoric Indians, governed by the Incas. "When Mr. Smith returned to San Francisco he gave some away, lost others, and now has only four left. He has been repeatedly asked to put his price on these, but refuses to do so. The other da' he re fused an offer of $20 for one. It was sucli trifles as these that ex cited the avarice of Pizarro and other vandals, who tore down bet ter governments than have ever ocoupied the same territory since. The first section of the bill to regulate the sale of liquors in "Washington Territory reads. "The board of county commissioners of each county may grant license for the sale of malrj spirituous and vinous liquors, if deemed expedi ent upon application by petition of thirty-of the resident freehold ers of the town, village or pre cinct where the sale ol such liquors is proposed to take place, setting forth that the applicant is a man of respectable character and standing, and is a resident of this territory, and praying that license may be issued to him, such application to be filed tn the office of the county auditor, and upon the payment into the county treasury of such sum as the board may require, not less than 500 for each license, and upon the compliance of the provisions of this act. "I see you are growing a mus tache, George," said she as she caressed the lappel of his coat. "Ye-es.1' stammered George, blushing furiously. I I am try incr to cultivate one. "Don't it feel funny on your lip?" she ask ed. "Well, no," he laughed, re. gaining his composure; "it seems to be quite natural." "I wonder how a mustache would feci on my lip," she said, with a far-away, absent look in her eves. "You needn't wonder long, then," said George, as he bent down. "Oh, you forward thing!" sheexclimed; "I've got a mind to make you take that back again." And he did. A sad state of heathenism seems to exist in the lumber region of eastern Texas. The people live in rude huts in the greatest filth and squalor, are ignorant and bru tish in all respects, and have for their only recreation weekly "dances," at which the scraping of old fiddles and the dances them selves are only accompaniments to wild excesses and shameless de bauchery. In one section the mill- owners recentiv started a school for their own children and offered its advantages free to all those liv ing in the woods, but the offer was universally refused, sending chil dren to school "would spoil them." An insider in Oregon Transcon tinental savs: "All these rumors and false statements of Oregon Transcontinental have grown out of the fact that the company is an abnormal organization. it builds railroads but it does not own the roads it has built. The company has assets, but the peo ple can't sec assets, and in a period of depression they are more sus picious of Oregon Transconti nental than they would be of a railroad whose property they could see. Among the exhibits at the for eign exhibition at Boston, are sets of terra-cotta ware marked "free," meaning that no duties were to be charged upon them, A visitor was recently detected taking away a piece, and he innocently asserted that he thought the mark author ized him to take one. An account of stock was immediately made, and as a score of similar articles are missing, it is thought that other visitors have made the same mis take. John Quincy Adams received a salary from the United States government for sixty-nine years, and the sum total must have amounted to half a million. At the close of his presidential term he had fifty-two years of office holding, and his salary had aggre gated 425,000; still, he had seventeen years of congress after this, and died at the capital at a congressional session. The Philadelphia JYetftf ex plains the difference between a "newspaper man" and a "journal ist." It says: "A 'newspaper man' is one who has been writing; editorials for eighteen or twenty years A 'journalist' is one who began police reporting about a week ag:o." An oyster will Jive to the age of twenty-six years. That is, in the sea, he will. In the restau rant the chances are decidedly against him. Sometimes he lasts a long time in the restaurant; oh, a very long time. But he does not live nearly so long as he lasts. It is stated that a Texas hen sat for three days on a nest full of hail stones before she discovered that they were not eggs. The funniest part of the story is that she didn't hatch out an iceberg or two. But perhaps the Texas liar was not en joying good health. J. P. Blanchard. of Canemah, Oregon, gathers this year 2000 pounds of grapes from a vine 20 years old; it is 44 inches in cir cumference near the ground. In the great sea of humanity it is the frothy wave that makes the loudest roar. 1 The Pall Mall Gazette, contain ing a statement that the authori ties have been anonymously in formed that an attempt will be made to destroy the train on which the Duke and Duchess of Con- naught are to travel to Dover from London on their way to India, caused a great sensation. A man named Poolrowski has been arrested at Dirichan, charged with, and confessing to being sent by the Nihilists to murder Bis marck. 'Poolrowski said he was a Russian actor, and that the Nihil ists provided him with money to travel to Dantzic. The key of a safe in a railroad office at Joliet, 111., was lost, and there being no honest locksmith in town of sufficient skill, a well known bank burglar was employed to pick the lock. Tunnel No. 1, on the California and Oregon railroad, is completed, and trains are now running through it a distance from Redding of four teen miles. It is reported the first secretary of the Chinese legation has stated that war between China and France is now certain. AbsoIuteJy Pure. This nowdcr never varies.
