(2) ASTORIA, OREGON: SATURDAY- .NOVEMBER 3. 1863 Should New York go Demo cratic next Tuesday, Democratic presidential candidates will be abundant. According to the government reports the currency is increasing, but the majority of the people are unable to see it. Vanderbilt is worth about 4,000 times his own weight in gold or about 50,000 times his own weight in silver. Four years ago an Indianapolis man lost a dog, and he is still run ning a three-line advertisement offering $2 reward. Although a kiss is one o the most ephemeral things in the world, a Pennsylvania jury recent ly decided that it was worth one cent. On what it pronounces the "best authority," a Boston paper says tkat Mr. Villard's combined sala ries as president of various corpora tions, amount to $28,000 per an num. A New York dispatch of the 1st, says Northern Pacific sold up to 29J for common, and GJ for preferred, on the announcement that the government had ordered transportation of the Oregon and British Columbia mails over the Northern Pacific lines. This, it is stated, would add over 500,000 to the receipts of the company annually. In thirty days Congress meets. Nothing is known in regard to any recommendations of the presi dent's message. He is but just re ceiving the principal points of the reports of the heads of depart ments. As to the report that he will recommend a total abolition of internal taxes, it is not credited. There is a general impression that he may go as far as he did in his message of last December, in which he advised -the repeal of all this class of taxes, except those on distilled spirits. Herman Hauit, general man ager of the Northern Pacific rail road, has tendered his resignation, which has been accepted, to take effect November the 1st. He says his resignation was entirely due to the policy of radical re trenchment adopted by the North ern Pacific, which practically tied his hands and prevented the prop er running of the road. At a meeting of the stockholders they had decided to cut off all possible expenses, and he had received in structions to cut down the force actually below the necessary num bers. The directors complained that the expenditures were too much in excess of the receipts. He explained this by stating that the road was turned over to tfie operating department by the con struction department in a very in complete condition. In fact, as the parallel rails were laid, so bad was the condition of the road that, though trains could be run over it, they could not be run with any degree of safety or speed. NEW TO-DAY.
