The national fish commission is
about to send one car-load of carp
to the Louisville exposition and
another for distribution along the
line of the Northern Pacific road.
As a means of getting a small
part of the enormous emigration
that is pouring into the northwest,
a writer in the Charleston Courier
suggests to southerners that they
can find -profit in parceling out
their vast domains and giving
away alternate patches of fifty
acres.
In San Francisco it is thought
probable that the railroad disa
greement as to the question of
fares has given rise to the rumors
of a change in the attitude of the
Central Pacific relative to the
northwest trade, amon which is
the report of a new line of steam
ers running between Portland and
San Francisco in the interests of
the above road. There is no dis
guising the fact that consider
able feeling has been engendered
by the position assumedjty the
Northern Pacific in relation to San
Francisco, and to the trade of
southern Oregon generally, while
it is conceded on all sides that
competition for California trade
between the Northern Pacific and
the Central Pacific would lead to
a war attended by no profits to the

purchase of Morgan & Sons' line
of iron steamers gave them
strength in the event of a dis

dient. The Pacific ocean is the great
whale fishery of the world. Here
tofore New England capital and
enterprise have monopolized it to
the almost exclusive benefit of
New England. Honolulu and San
Francisco received a small share of
U:c profits as outfitters of the
whaling vessels. The crude oil
and bone were shipped east to be
worked up and refined. The cost
of transportation was thus in
creased and to the extent of the
increase discounted the profits of
every crew. It is now announced,
says the San Francisco Chronicle,
that two companies composed of
California capitalists, have organ
ized and incorporated, with the
view of transferring the monopoly
from the east to this city, each on
a capital of $1,000,000. One of
these companies will operate with
six steamers and two sailing ves
sels among the whale fisheries of
the North Pacific as high as thev
can go for the iceberg obstructions
and along the southern coast,
where the most inferior quality of
whale abounds, running to San
Francisco with the crude
oil and bone taken on each cruise.
The other will erect refineries of
the oil somewhere on the Potrero
and work it up for the markets of
the world. No argument is needed
to prove that these two companies
will in course of a few years, with
ordinary good luck, monopolize
the business of whaling and re
fining whale oil on the Pacific.
The wonder is that the enterprise
has been so long delayed, consid
ering the superior advantages of
this point. Long ago we thought
of turning the vast surplus of our
orchards into canned fruit for mer
chandise, and the utilization of our
salmon fisheries in tin same way,
but here right at hand has lain
dormant another business that we
might have handled quite as easily
and as profitably for the taking
of it.
