No. 26.
SHREWDNESS VERSUS
SHARPNESS.
Shrewdness is an excellent qual
ity in a business man. It carries
him through difficulties that, would
swamp others, aud enables him to
avoid dangers into which less
shrewd men would be certain to
stumble. J3ut when shrewdness
degenerates into mere sharpness
which may be defined as shrewd
ness devoid of conscientiousness
it becomes as dangerous as a two
edged sword in the hands of a
child. It cuts both its possessor
and all with whom he has dealings.
Shrewdness is honest, taking ad
vantage of circumstances in an
honest manner, and only for legit
imate purposes. Sharpness fre
quently descends to trickery to
accomplish its object, and is so
closely allied to the downright dis
honesty oftentimes that the differ
ence between them is not apparent
to the ordinary observer. The
shrewd merchant is respected and
successful, while the mere sharper
equally shrewd but less honest
is avoided, despised, and at con
stant war with the world. Hi; is
rarely successful, and success
never brings him respect. Most
frequently he may be found at the
bottom of the ladder of fortune,
sore from the tumbles he has
received, for he sometimes olimbs
part way up by hanging to the
skirts of energetic climbers, only
to fall when shaken off and left to
his own exertions. He lopcs to
reach the top at the expense of
others; and wastes more brain and
muscle in the endeavor to ascend
by trickery than would suffice to
cam him triumphantly to the high
est round by honest endeavor. To
such men, shrewdness, instead of
a blessing, is a curse.
And now we are told that the
Northern Pacific railroad is about
to discriminate against San Fran
cisco ij freight charges, and with
a view to the destruction of 'San
Francisco trade. We do not be
lieve that such a suicidal policy
could possibly be inaugurated by
this new. road, or that a man of
Yillard's undoubted sagacity
should so suddenly exhibit unmis
takable symptoms of fclo de sc.
We heard first that the Northern
Pacific had abolished the contract
S3stem. That, however, has little
to do with us here, unless they
landed goods in San Francisco for
all people as cheaply as do the
Central Pacific for the most fa
vored merchants. It has been
hinted that all the roads are about
to adopt the same system. It is,
however, announced that Sun
Francisco is to be discriminated
against in rates. To do this would
be simply to inaugurate a war of
rates with the Central Pacific,
which would certainly battle stout
ly for its share of Oregon trade,
and which, if only for selfish mo
tives, would certainly see that San
Francisco was not woisted in the
contest. Doubtless the issue of
such a contest will be similar to
that of all other contests of the
same description a treaty and
higher rates. S. J?. Herald.
The quantit of salmon received
at Getchell's cannery on the Co
quillc river, up to the present this
season, far exceeds the expecta
tions of the proprietors, says the
Coos bay JVetcs. During last
week the number caught by their
twelve boats with gill nets was
from two to three thousand per
day. On Saturday, Oct. 6th, the
company had on hand six thou
sand cases of canned salmon
which will bring in the San Fran
cisco market, at $5 per case, $30,
000. This amount would cover
all the expenses up to that
date and leave a small surplus of
profit to the company besides the
improvements, cannery, etc.
Tiie enormous wheat ranch
owned by the late Dr. Glenn, in
Colusa county, Cala., is to be cut
up into proper sized farms, and
fifteen thousand acres are now
offered for sale. This is good.
Instead of one farm house on six
ty thousand acres, there will be
hundreds of beautiful houses dot
ted oyer it.
Seal Hunters in Trouble.
It is reported that the English
schooner Olomc, engaged in seal
hunting in Behring's strait, has
been driven from there. It is
said that the natives drove the
crew off Behring island while
they were skinning seals. The
Alaska Commercial Company has
the lease of the island from the
Russian government. One of the
Glome crew was captured by the
natives. The following day; the
Alcvtimlfir 11) n; Alaska Com
mercial Company's steamer, ar
rived and her officers, accom
panied by u Russian official,
boarded the Glome and seized and
confiscated all her papers and the
seals taken, and ordered her to go
to Petropaulovski. Tiie order was
disobeyed and the Alexander II
gave her in charge of two naval
officers and six marines. The cap
tain and officers of the schooner
were then taken to Yladivostock
and the captain filed a protest
against their detention. Neither
the Russian officials nor the British
man-of-war at that port paid any
attention to his protest. At last
accounts he had telegraphed to the
Governor of Tekutsh and was
awaitinjr an answer.
The cause of woman goes
marching on. It has just received
a strong impetus from an opinion
rendered hy the attorney-general
of Massachusetts. He has offi
cially informed Gov. Butler that a
woman is not a "person" not le
gally. Physical', intellectually,
morally, spiritually, esthetically,
equitably, rightfully, rc;tlly, truly,
and in the dictionary, a woman is
a "person." Ncverthless, not a
"person" in the eyes of the law.
No wonder every woman of spirit
as she ponders upon such a decis
ion feels, inclined to damn the
eyes of the law with faint and
hollow praises. The eyes of the
law indeed! "If the light that is
in thee be darkness, how great is
that darkness?" The dictionary
defines a "person" as "a living
soul." "a self-conscious being," "a
man," "a moral agent," "a living
human being," "a man, woman or
child," "an individual of the
human race." All the same, the
law of Massachusetts, expressing
itself at the mouth of the attor
ney-general, does not hesitate to
declare that whatever woman is,
she is not a "person" not legally.
The Indians aie having rare
sport spearing salmon to-day, says
the Tacoma JVetcs. The oldest
timer does not remember when
the- salmon "jumped" so freely as
for several hours this morning.
Hundreds of them could be seen
in the air at once, some rising
several feet above the water, and
it really seemed as though the bay
was alive with them. This "jump
ing" business gives a opportunity
for an exceedingly novel species
of sport. "We noticed a party of
sportsmen out in boats this morn
ing, shooting salmon on the "fly"
with shotguns. A quick shot
could get his cbird" nearly every
time. If hit the salmon would
sink on striking the water, but in
a few moments rise and float on
the surface. The gunners soon
learned the ropes. It was noticed
that each fish made three leaps
from the water when once it start
ed, say ten feet apart. At the
first leap the hunter could sight
his game, at the second discover
the direction it was moving, and
by the third his gun could be in
place for a quick shot.
A Hong Kong correspondent
says: "It is difficult to estimate
the exact military position in Ton
quin. Two months ago the Chi
nese force on the Ynrnan frontier
numbered 9,000, all armed with
modern weapons. At Bacninh
were 5,000 Chinese troops. It is
very probable the French will soon
succeed in driving the French
from Tonquin, but the real conflict
will commence when the frontier
has been reached. Tonquin will
then be another Acheen, but on
an immensely larger scale. , The
only apparent solution of the dif
ficuliy is a compromise, or a
French advance on rekin.
