At Colusa, Cain., last Wednes
day, in the case of the murderer
of Dr. Glenn, the California
wheat king, the jrury brought in
a verdict of murder in the first
degree, and fixed the penalty at
inJprisonment for life.
Six gangs of laborers are now
at work cutting the horse-shoe
grade at the Blue Mountain sta
tion. By causing the road to form
a large circle on a steady up-grade,
the 0. R. & X. Co. hope to find
their way. oui of the Dry creek
canyon. Work on this end of the
Walla "Walla and Pendleton road
will be pushed ahead rapidly. W.

lied upon that the twenty-five
miles of grade under contract by
Mr. Bennett is nearly finished.
There are about 300 men at work
on the Columbia river bridge, and
the work is progressing rapidly.
The bridge is expected to be com
pleted by the first of April-. Cars
may be running on the twenty-five
miles this side within two months.

Republican by majorities ranginsr
from 100,000 downward. In that
time the Democrats have elected
two governors, Alien and Bishop,
the first in 1S73 and the latter in
1S77. The state has not gone
Democratic in two successive state
elections till last vear and this.
The El Paso Times says: The
main trouble of the Boundary!
Commission, which has just fin
ished its labors, was in finding the
United States monuments and de
termining whether they were in
proper position. The natives had
put many of them to queer uses.
In one place a monumenthad been
used in constructing a chimney,
against which nestled an adobe
house.
In a conversation with a rentle
man well posted with the maneu
vers of the O. R. & X. Co., we
learned that the road is literally
lined with workmen between Cen
treville and Blue Mountain station,
and that the road-bed is under
contract to be completed within
six weeks from date. The road is
being pushed to completion by the
New York office, 'and it is sup
posed has considerable to do with
the Oregon Short Line compact.

Suits have been brought in New
lork to enjoin the N. P. R. R. Co.
from issuing the proposed second
mortgage bonds. The ground
taken is that the original act of in
corporation prohibits the company
from making any mortgage or
issuing any construction bonds
without the consent of congress.
Congress gave its consent in 1S70,
that the company might issue con
struction bonds and secure them
by mortgage. Under that consent
Jay Cooke's mortgage was made
which was subsequently foreclosed

gress, once exercised, was exhaust
ed and could not be repeated.
Yesterdays San Francisco
Chronicle says; Among the
arrivals by the steamer Granada
from Panama is Moses "Was

for the Panama Canal com
pany. In an interview he stated
that there are now S000 men em
ployed on the canal, and he said
that on December 1, when the
rainy season would be over, C000
Jamaician laborers would arrive,
when the real work of excavating
an interocean passageway would
be commenced under the direction
of Mr. Dingier, chief engineer,
who will be due at Colon on No
vember 15. Every inch of ground
on the isthmus has been surveyed,
examined and measured. All esti
mates have been made, contracts
concluded and means provided for
insuring a grand success. Those
on the ground implicity believe
that the canal will be finished by
1889, the date assigned by De
Lesseps.
The twelfth district of the Uni
ted States life saving service com
prises the Pacific coast. The
stations are located at Neah bay,
Washington Territory, on the In
dian reservation; Shoal water bay,
Washington Territory, near light
house boat landing; Cape Han
cock, Washington Territory, Ba
ker's bay; Cape Argo, Oregon,
Coos bay, near lighthouse; Hum
boldt bay, California, near light
house; Bolinas bay, California;
Golden Gate park, California, on
the beach in Golden Gate park,
San Francisco; Point Conception,
California not built in 1S82.
During the season of 1881-82 there
were seven disasters, involving
total loss of vessels; value of the
vessels, 315,000; value of the
cargoes, S52,375; total value of
property, 307,375; number of
persons on board, 91 all saved;
number of shipwrecked passengers
succored at stations, 32; number
of days succor afforded, -13; value
of property saved, $1070; value
of property lost, 3G6,305.
