concerning " the Northern Pacific
boom, says: "The floor of the
Stock Exchange was densely
packed and the excitement was
intense. Both the small galleries
were completely filled with eager
spectatorsj few of whom could
comprehend the wild demonstra
tion below. The brokers were
seen crowded up in front of the
chairman's desk, moving their
arms in the air, while husky, seem
ingly unintelligible sounds issued
from their mouths. The chairman
helped along the strife by continu
ally pounding with his hard wood
en gavel. Perpetual streams of
humanity kept moving in and out
of the door, and although the
crowd inside was closely packed,
each individual's movement was
apparently accomplished with dif.
ficulty. The price of Northern
Pacific preferred advanced for cash
deliver, and brokers began to ask
each other in a dazed sort of way
what it meant, and there was no
larking on the floor of the Ex
change. Each man was in sober
earnest, and there Avere
many' who made con
servative observations on the
situation and who shook their
heads thoughtfully and expressed
fears that the "boom" would be
disastrous. The lowest price paid'
for Northern Pacific preferred for
cash deliveries during the day was
01, the highest price was 7SA,
and the closing price was 7o.
The same stock sold for regular
delivery as low as 57 and as high
as 64,-and closed at 72f . Just be
fore the close of the market com
mon stock of the Northern Pacific
had a- small sized boom, and its
price for regular delivery advanc
ed from to 2Gi, and for cash
delivery from 2o to 27. The
close of the market left the street
in a state of feverish anxiety.
Some brokers feared there would
be n corner in preferred stocks
that would bring serious disaster.
The matter was discussed with in
terest in the up town hotels and
restaurants last evening. Mr.
Viilard's friends were disposed
to be jubilant over what
they regarded as his coup
d' etat. They said that the
bears who had been selling
Northern Pacific preferred short,
deserved to be squeeze d, and that
they would be squeezed still more.
As Mr. Villard walked through
Exchange place towards his office
in the Mills building, he was sur
rounded and congratulated by his
acquaintances. He is reported to
havesaid to one of his friends that
Northern Pacific would be worth
4 per cent, more before evening on
Monday. 1 1 was stated that a very
strong party has been formed to
advance Oregon Transcontinental
next week. The statement was
that enough Northern Pacific pre
ferred had been secured to render
the second mortgage bonds a cer
taint'. On this the money would
be advanced to enable the com
pany to repay its debt to the
Oregon Transcontinental, which in
turn would take up its hypothe
cated securities. A committee
would be appointed to investigate
the condition of the company's
afTairs and would make a report
which would re-establish confi
dence, and in the revulsion of feel
ing the stock would have an extra
ordinary rise.
The surprising fact is made
known that from the appropriation
of 6100,000,000 for the payment
of pensions up to June 30th, 1SS3,
$39,000,000 remains unexpended,
and has been re-appropriated for
the fiscal year s6cceeding that
date.
A West Virginia secret organ
ization, banded together to pro
tect illicit distillers, was found to
have at its head a United States
gauger, by name Hewes.
Messrs. Siejens are energet
ically pushing the work on the new
Mackay-Bennett cables. They
will form a duplicate line from
Ireland to Nova Scotia, continued
from Nova Scotia by special cable
to Cape Ann, and having a branch
line from Ireland to France. The
Messrs. Siemens are convinced that
nothing superior ever came from
their factories. They will intro
duce all the improvements sug
gested by years of research and
experience. The length of the en
tire system of cables will be 5,000
miles. They will be laid by the
steamer Faraday next summer.
Oregon Transcontinental lias
got on the other tack now and is
going up. The bears are badly
cinched, and are getting a little of
the same they dealt out so freely
two weeks ago. On Monday the
Villard stocks all went up a peg,
O. & T. selling for 4G.
The latest political rumor is
that Blaine and Conkling have'
"buried the hatchet," and that the
programme is for Blaine to run
for president and Conkling go
back to the senate from New
York state.
What would Astorians think of
having to pay SG.35 on the $100,
as in Yuba county, California?
New Orleans is talking of
building a $30,000,000 bridge
across the Mississippi.
The wheat crop of the United
States for '83 is estimated at 420,
000.000 bushels.
