Our Thriving1 City.
Though Astoria has no railroad,
.we question if any community in
' the Union is busier or more pros
perous than this one. Every
branch of trade is represented, and
everyone who practices ordinary
iprudence, if industrious, succeeds.
There are fewer failures and less
necessity for failure here than in
other places. True, competition
in some branches of business grows
keener as the city grows, and the
wants of the people become more
numerous, but of that it may be
said in general that it is simply
"the survival of the fittest." Com
petitioniurts none but the weak,
the ignorant and the inexperi
enced. . A business that cannot
stand competition is no business.
Our busy little city is so admir
ably situated that nothing from
without can hurt her. A railroad,
a new steamship line, anything of
that nature helps, and as the inex-
haustiblc resources of the sur
roundihg'country are opened, the
city will grow in wealth and im
portance. . To say nothing of our
own count', that seat of future
population on the other side of
Young's river, we have that fertile
reach of territory from Chehalis to
Yaquina, which when opened up
will play a leading part in aiding
the building up of a great comraer-
-cial port on this favored peninsula.
In the city itself progress is evi
dent on every side. Xew and
beautiful residences, improved
streets, increased facilities of
travel, gas works, water works,
etc., betoken an advancing demand
for more solid attributes of civil
ized life, and in this afternoon of
jthe nineteenth century the de
m imandjfojr those things Is immedi
ately supplied. To the industri
"ousimanwhowishes'ahome'whefe he can, 'by honest work raise his
family and enjoy some of the com
forts of life, Astoria, year by year
' offers greater advantages. That
many are availing themselves of
the opportunity is manifest to the
most casual observer.
The following says a New York
dispatch, are among "Wall street
gossip: Dealings in Northern
Pacific preferred stock to-day
were said to be unparalled in the
history of Wall street. Stock
loaned for from &5 to 3G for the
use of 100 shares for the day.
Sales for cash were from 3i to 4
per cent, above those in the regu
lar way. Thus a holder could sell
his stock for cash, and buy it back
immediately, making from So 50
to fci by the transaction.

another insider $, 200,000. The
latter, it is said was unable to pav

hotel, although only a few months
ago he was considered a million

does not share the belief that th
worst is passed.

The census of 1880 gives the
total population of Austria and
Hungary at 37,786,26, of which
number 22,144,24 belong to Aus
tria and 15,642,002 to Hungary.
Divided into nationalities, the pop
ulation of the two countries con
sists, in round numbers, of 10,000,
000 Germans, 7,000,000 Czechs
and Moravians, G,200,000 Magyars,
4,200,000 Servo.Croats, 3,300,000
Poles, 3,200,000 Ruthenians,2,500,-

ites. A Sax Francisco dispatch says
attention is drawn to the fact that
unless more stringent measures
are adopted to prevent the smug
gling of Chinese across the Brit
ish Columbia boundary into Wash
ington Territory, that the thou
sands of Chinamen now employed
on the Canadian Pacific Railroad
will, as soon as the contracts
are completed, find their way
into the United States. The fact
is well known to residents of Brit
ish Columbia that at the present
time Chinamen are coming in, over
twenty-five or thirty at a time. It
has been snggested that revenue
cutters now idly lying there might
be employed up there to some pur
pose.
It is not surprising, says the
Oregonian, that there should be a
struggle for the possession and
control of the property represent
ed by the Yillard stocks. Nations
have gone to war with each other
for far less tempting prizes. The
men who obtain and hold a major
ity of the Oregon and Transconti
nental stocks can exercise a do
minion of continental proportions.
A Bulletin- to the Peru, Lima
JDiario Official announces the
signing of the treaty of peace on
the 20th, at Ancon, between the
Chilian government and General
lesias. The. bulletin adds: "As
Lima and Callao will, within two
days, be occupied by Peruvians,
the Diario Official will no longer
be published.
It is now proposed to issue a
two per cent, government bond,
as a partial refunding of 400,000,-
000 of the national debt. Its
possibility is an admirable illus
tration of the high character of
our public credit.
The highest point on the Rocky
mountains reached by the North
ern Pacific is 1200 feet below the
summit of the Sierras on the Cen
tral Pacific.
The Mercury, now loading at
Port Blakely, with spars for an
Atlantic port, gets 1S,000 for
lump charter.
The attorney-general of Massa
chusetts decides that a woman is
not "a person."
