SCANDINAVIAN POLITICS.
One of our early visits was to
the headquarters of of the Norwe
gian parliament. The storthing
was not in session in August, but
there was a little mild political ex
oitement in the trial or impeach
ment of the First Minister, Mr Sel
mor, which was in progress. I
confess to having failed to under
stand the exact nature of the
charges agahist hin. There is
something about having given
wrong advice to the king, and
something about having been der
elict in other ways in his duty to
wards the people, but at the bot
tom of it all is the difference in
political feeling that exists between
Norway and Sweden. The Swedes,
without professing any fulsome
legally, are generally monarchists
and have a genuine regard and af
fection for their king and roal
family. It is not, 1 suspect, a loy
alty that would stand any very se
vere strain. If the king were to
show any desire to overstep the
constitutional limit of his preroga
tive his faithful subjects would
make short work of him. Only as
long as he is content to reign in a
constitutional way without putting
on any airs or opposing the popu
lar will, his throne is in no danger,
while his personal character de-
servedlv jrives him considerable
influence. The Norwegians, on
the other hand, are staunch repub
licans, and if the question of mon
archy or republic were submitted
to a plebiscite in their section of
King Oscar's realm there would
soon be another sovereign out of
-.employment.- T$ot that this feel:
njg is b' any means unanimous.
Among many of the higher class
of people the anti-republican feel
ing is passionately strong. To be
long to the Venstra or radical par
tv is a high crime ahd misdemean
or, an offense for which a father
will cast off his best-beloved son;
a barrier that raised between two
brothers, turns natural affection
into mistrust, and even hatred,
and that divides society with
sharp, clear-cut line.
Besides the political differences
there are, it seems to me, other
sentiments that keep Swedes and
Norwegians more apart from each
other than would seem natural.
Sweden is a richer country; its
population is more than double.
nearly treble, that of its associate
kingdom; the chief seat of govern
incut is at Stockholom, and there
is something of a patronizing spirit
or tone in the acts and speech of
the Swedes toward their neighbors,
which is strongly resented by the
Norwegians, who show no inclina
tion to be patronized or to play
second fiddle and who cling with
dogged tenacity to such indepen
dence as under the joint monarchy
they enjoy- They may have fewer
men and less - mono', but they
have no fancy for being in any way
looked down upon, and so there is
between the two countries a strain
of harsh feeling that among people
of more excitable nature might de
velop into bad blood. Fortunately
there are few real causes for
mutual jealousy or mistrust or any
ii-favored breeze to blow these lit
tie sparks of antagoism into a
flame. Christiana Correzpomlent.
Rev. Atticus G. Haygood says:
"Intelligence spoils no man for
anything that a man ought to do
in this world." There is where
Atticus is at fault. Intelligencs
spoils a man for jury duty. In
this place an intelligent man one
who knows anything about the
case or anything else is promptly
challenged by the defense. JVew

How We Lived Forty Years Ago
To go back 40 years, fully as
useful a contrast and as instructive
a comparison may be made as to
bring the early settler from Eng
land, Holland, and France in op
position to thesr descendants ot
200 years later. In 1SW and for
some period thence onward,money,
as currency, was scarce. Possibly
general business suffered for want
of the medium of exchange. Mon
ey,! n bills or coin, had a value that
would be looked upon now as al
most a worshiping of a fetich.
"One dollar a da?v was "a good
day's pay," and so it was consid
ered even for fairly skillful labor.
Several men, for instance, were
employed in squaring, by chalk
line and broad ax, the round tim
bers to form the framing of a dam.'
Others bored the holes for mortises
and chiseled them out. Others
did the "scribing," the sawing and
drcssinir of the tenons. Few of
them got over SI. 25 per day "from
sunup to sundown. Hie man
who could "scribe," and who laid
out the job, got perhaps $1.50. The
machinist got from $1.50 to 2 per
day; and he who got the 2 was a
fortunate man; and for that time
he wits a competent man. Labor
ers had 50 cents per day, and in
ha3'ing time, when several days'
ordinary work must be crowded
into 12, 1-1, or possibly 1G hours
they got 75 cents. Several work
men, apt at any jobs, 1. '
Now this is a fair showing of
the value of labor 40 vears ago. '
"What was the relative value of I
housing, fuel, food, and clothing? j
for the times cost from 25 to 40 j
per year. Fuel wood was !
somewhat less than it can be fur- !
nishedj as coal now, at any place .
remote from the mines; say for an j
ordinarv familv. six cords of
hickory, 24; now four tons of J
coal (two fires), about equal. Food I
cost less 40 years ago than now; j
but it was not the same food '
Fresh meat once, or at the mostj
twice a week, and rarely that ex-
cent in "the kfllinjr season;1' fish
-
caught at the stream or pond, or
hawked about at four cents a
pound dressed. Vegetables from
the garden or from- the market
at 25 cents a bushel
and less for turnips
no cheaper. Clothing can be
bought cheaper now than it could
be 40 ears ago, aud it is cheaper I
in more than one sense. Perhaps j
it would be better for the country j
at large if better clothing at high
er prices should be the rule.
It is scarcely necessary to add
to "how we lived 40 years ago"
any statement of how wc live or 1
iiow we might live now. it is
enough to the present earner of ,
his bread by labor to know of the (
annoyances and lack of opportuni
ties of his predecessors. A glance
over the condition 40 years ago j
and the present condition will con
vince any unprejudiced mind that
an improvement has been made in
the condition of our workers, and
that the worker of to-day gets a
better return for his labor than he
did 40 years ago. And this state
ment applies as nearly to the un
skilled worker as to the adept me
chanic. Only that the advantage
now, as ever before, holds with
the intelligent, skilled, experi
enced mechanic.

The Fiji Times, in a recent
article calls attention to the im
mense utility of the cocoanutas an
article of food, and the valuable
qualities which it has for sustain
ing nutrition. The following in
stance is given in the case of a
vessel that once left San Francisco
with 400 passengers for Sydney,
and which, in consequence of run
ning short of stores, had to put in
at Sanisa, where a large quantity
of cocoanuts were obtained. Dur
ing the remainder of the passage
very heavy weather was encoun
tered, in which the vessel became
waterlogged, and only reached
Sydney after a perilous journey of
eighty days, during which time
all the provisions ran short, and
men, women, and children were
Jed only upon cocoanuts, being at
last reduced to one per diem for
each adult. Notwithstanding the
diet, not a life was lost, and not a
single case of sickness occurred all
j the passengers landing in a healthy
and well-nourished condition. In
another instance, two men drifted
in a whale boat on to Quails Is
land, where they remained for
seven years before they were
taken off. They had no food be-
vond a chance flying fish and
cocoanuts, and yet when rescued
were in excellent condition, and
had gained in weight.
