OA ASTORIA, OHEGON: WEDXKSDAY OCTOMKK 10. 1SSS Villa nn stocks are reported on the rise in "Wall street, and the flurry appears to be over. Pjiesidext Arthur has accept ed that portion of the N. P. R. K., between Portland and a point op posite Kalama. Schylvr Colfax is of the opin ion that the Democrats this fall will carry the state of Xew York by 25,000 majority. All nations use the grindstone, and it is perhaps the one piece of mechanism that has the same form and is the samoin principle every where. It is stated' that an understand ing exists between Tilden and Hendricks, by which an effort is to be made to 'put up the old ticket next year. Twkntv divorces were granted in one day recntly in Chicago by Judges Gardner and Moran. The former made the best score, a de cree every nine minutes. Tnii New York Graphic says: It is currently -rumored on "Wall street that lLmry illard has secured a very largo, if not a controlling, interest in the Thms. Ehwarps PiERRKroxr thinks that the next presidential election depends entirely on New York. and that if President Arthur can carry N-w York lie will be ronom- iiirfted. Tin: once famous tribe of Cher okee Indians is now reduced to 1,000 persons, and they suffer a steatly decrease which wiil extin guish them by the middle of the next century. A kaxi) of half-breed Chippewa Indians residing in thtf Turtle mountains have informed the Sur ve3'or general of Dakota that they will not permit a Government survey of their reservation to be made. r " Tjie New. Orleans Christ inn Advocate believes that if the ne groes of the south have made any progress since their eman cipation, "it is no doubt due al most entirely to the discipline of slavery." A xjewspaekr.. correspondent who has been sampling the cities of the far west, says: "Helena, the capital of Montana, i.s aewnted orally and morally on the fust syl lable. It is probably the richest and; wickedeSL city, of its sizein the country' , - . ix.an interview with Treasurer Belknap of the Northern Pacific Railroad in New York the ques tion was asked: Will $25,000, 000 additional be. needed to place the road on its feet?" Mr. Bel knap said: "I pon completion of the work it has been found that the costsJiaveKjfcoccded the . esti mates, audit is now apparent that frorncag'hVtb "ten million dollars will be required in addition to the general mortgage to repay ad vanocs and furnish all rolling stock which it is estimated will he needed in the course of the next two yoars..-A:great. deal of? talk has, lee:i said in .regard to a float ing debt", ns ; it" is called. The people must take the matter in hand. They have provided funds "tiircctly nud indi rectly for the construction of the Pacific roads, and they aro entitled by law to the interference of con gress for the protection of public interest. Tt was to that end the right to amend and repeal the charters was reserved. Tt is time for the people to say to" their rep resentatives in congress that thc' must act under the law or srive way to others who will do so. It is reflecting upon the American government that the people should be plundered by corporations which have, acquired valuable properties by public subscription and in defiance of the law which authorizes and requires the national legislature to protect them from extortion. There is a speck of war s vys the Chronv'lc between the (Vn .tral and Northern Pacific' roads, which threatens to rupture the recently aranged pool. The North ern pacific Express Companr and Wells, Fargo & Co. arc at logger heads. The Northern Pacific which is controlled by people interested in the railroad of that name, wishes to keep to itself the express business of the northern country. "Wells, Fargo & Co., the controlling .interest of which is held by the managers of the Cen tral Pacific, arc reluctant to aban don the territory of the Northi rn Pacific. It is an open secret that unless Wells, Fargo & Co.. wil consent to abandon thrir Northern b.isine'ss the Northern Pacific Ex press Company intends to operate in California, Nevada and Arizona. The Central Pacific, it is under stood, will refuse to carry any other than "Wells, Fargo & Co.'s express matter. This would be followed by a refusal of. the Northern Pacific to carry "Wells, Fargo & Co.'s matter over their line. It is to be hoped that the present difference will ripen into a quarrel lively enough to bring about a competition which may result in bursting up. the recent thieving pool arrangements of the raciuc railroads.
