John Jai:i:ett, the retiring president of the Amalgamated Association, has been employed by the American Iron and Tin Plate Association as general managing agent to take charge of the matter of working up high tariff senti ment in favor of this industry. Which in plain English means that though there is no tin plate manufactured in this country yet John Jarrett wants to tax such men as the Columbia river salmon packcrs, the California fruit can ners, and indirectly every man, woman and child in the United States that uses canned goods, so that he and his associates can start a manufactory of tin plate in Pennsylvania. lie wants to make money and can't do it without be ing "protected" so that he wants the U; S. government to cinch several million people to "protect" some few hundreds who might start a tin plate manufactory if the inducements were made sufficient. It is now thirty years since Disraeli said that an Irishman aimed to rule all countries but his own. It seems that the Irish are ruling one country, and success fully for themselves and the coun try itself. The present English minister to the United States, Hon. L. S. West, is authority for the statement the Argentine Re public in South America is ruled by Irishmen who have grown rich at sheep farming, and that that country is law abiding and prosper ous. It is also stated that Chili is largely Irish, and that her present powess is due to the fact that Irishmen are in command of the Chilean army and nary. South America is a large country and offers great inducement to the Irish immigrant, but if Irishmen would retain their prosperity in that or any . other country they must ostracise (."Dynamite Rossa and his jranr. Awout six months from now presidential candidates will be named by two, possibly three conventions. To name or make a presidential candidate has long been a favorite amusement in and out of newspaper offices. The New York JSun is making a seri ous effort to select the Democratic presidential candinate and frowns at all suggestions other than those which point to Congressman Holman, of Indiana. It devotes several columns of nearly every issue to Holman and his praises, and from savin": a month ago that Holman should be elected, it now declares that he shall be elected, which is but additional proof of the old adage that even with a great newspaper like the Xim, it is "but a step from the sublime to the ridiculous." Devout Moslems confidently predict the end of the world on November Sth, the close of the Mohammedan thirteenth century Tradition declares that in the pres ent month, during the Ramadan fast, the sun shall rise in the west, the day of mercy and forgiveness shall cease, and that of judgment and retribution begin. Thus, a proclamation has been issued from Mecca warning all true believers to prepare for the coming day which has been widely circulated and has created a great impres sion. . Mex who look upon air naviga tion as a practical possibility are no longer pronounced as "cranks." The French are working harder for success in this direction than any other people. Speaking of navigating the air, a great math metician says if it can be done at all it will be done soon. .In Atlantic Ga., recently, the representative of a flash illustrated New York weekly was fined 1 000 for distribu ting it in that ci with a choice of serving in the chain gang if he don't pay the fine The hop crop of foreign coun tries, on the whole, is not equal to an average return, and, as in Ger many, Austria and Belgium, the tocks of old hops are unusually small, the importation of hops nto England will be under the average, and will not much ex ceed 200,000 hundred weight. In England the quantity of hops in tock is remarkably small. It is believed that it is unprecedentedly small. Tiie question of drying up the Zuyder Zee is being actively dis cussed in Holland. The royal in stitute of engineers purposes hold ing shortly a public meeting of their body at Amsterdam to thor oughly examine the scheme for arrying out this idea by connect ing with strong dykes all the islands that form its outer fringe, and so permanently excluding all inflow from the North sea. Reports to. Bradstreet's Jour nal from all parts of the country indicate that the industrial situa tion is much better than has hith erto been supposed. Except in a few industries, it says, orders are up to the standard of former years or in excess thereof, the small manufacturers, particularly in the west and south are doing well, and capital is going into new en terprises. TnE regular army in England foots up 190,000 men. The re serve is about 30,000 strong, and the militia about 140,000, of whom 25,000 are in the militia re serve, and there are about 180,000 enrolled volunteers. The actual combatant force is very different; of the 190,000 regulars, 92,000 are abroad; of the militia, 29,000 are deficient from the paper strength. Russian exiles are allowed to choose their companions among the condemned, to whom they will be chained for the long jour ney; women are fastened together by the wrist; men by the wrist and ankle; and it is mentioned as i special piece of news that one political prisoner elected to be chained to his wife. A German doctor recommends bread made with sea-water as a remedy against scrofula and dis orders resulting from insufficient nourishment. Sea-water ought to stand twelve hours before beinjr used for making dough, in order to free it from impurities. Bread made with it has no unpleasant taste. It is said that 100,000 children in New York city support them selves. Many of them probably have to support their parents also. The Crow Indians were very de sirous to trade with the Yillard ex cursionists. Nearly everything the redskins had on was for sale. NEW TO-DAY.
