of the city is improving aud the low
fevers that were so prevalent two
weeks ago are disappearing.
The public school building is as
suming a fine appearance. A four-
faced dial to mark the hdur would
look well, and it certainly should be
placed in the tower.
Local capitalists who have money
to invest will find our new school
house bonds a good buy. They run
for ten years, the interest is fair, the
security first-clrss, and the bonds can
all be held at home.
There be land rats and water
nits; residents along the city front
complain of portable property being
stolen, and one or two threaten sum
mary vengeance when they catch the
pilferers. A ducking would do them
good.
Wily Walla Wallians have dis
covered that the "essence of lemon"
shipped to their city from Portland
and there sold to the innocent Indi
ans, is more than half alcohol. This
is a eevero blow to a profitable in
dustry. Some of tho correspondent's ro
ports to eastern journals are finding
their way out here. In the main they
are well written aud truthful, though
iu somo would seem to run a vein of
regret that tho writer's previous
opinions was not substantiated by ac
tual facts.
During the last season A. W.
Berry of this place inaugurated a
new industry at Rainier, which will
soon dovelop into a profitable enter
prise; the packing of oolachan, or can
dle fish by a process which gives an
additional zest to the taste and flavor
of this Columbia river fish. Epicures
praise it, and tho sales arc increasing.
The Port Townsend-rlrns thinks
it may be well before investing your
11101103 in a wild cat enterprise to in
quire what kind of an adventurer pro
poses to manage it, and where and
why he has been fired out at other
places, and how many drinks per day
he dares to take without interrupting
his duties. Which the same is true
The city of Astoria is to be
lighted by gas, and preparations are
now being made for that purpose.
This is a long step forward and is
something that will inure to the bene
fit of everyone. It is a pity, however,
that iron lamp posts are not used.
Thoso wooden lamp posts do not
look quite in keeping with the situa
tion. Yesterday, evening, for the
first time in the history of the place,
tho city's streets were lighted by gas,
and when our street railroad gets
running and the other improvements
that aro talked of get under way, even
the most moss covered unprogression
ist will admit that the new way is the
best.
Capt. A. W. Berry received a
dispatch yesterday saying that the
American ship 0. S. Ihdbcri, which
ho loaded at Astoria, and which sailed
from here on July 30th, loaded with
salmon for New York, put into Hono
lulu, S. I., on the 30th of August, in
a leaky condition, having encountered
a cyclone. She lost fore-top-gallant
mast and all her sails. The crew had
to cut away main top and mizzen mast
to save the vessel. No further ad
vices havo been received concernin
the vessel: it is probable the usual
course of unloading, repairing, reload
ing, etc, will bo gone through with.

The Cairnsmore.
The conflict of ownership of this un
fortunate vessel still continues. A
party of fourteen who went down to
tho scene of the wreck Saturday
morning claim her as their property,
and refuse to recognize the claim
of Brown & McUabe who bought her
at auction last Saturday evening.
Both sides are confident of being
right. The purchasers claim that act
ing under instructions the captain
caused the sale of the vessel and car
go, and at as early an opportunity as
possible, because owing to the fact
that a storm might suddenly come up
her value would be greatly lessened
thereb', and that it was to the best
interests of all concerned to get as
much for her as possible which could
only be done by an immediate trans
fer of owners' rights.
The other side assert that they were
first on the vessel, that she was aban
doned and therefore open to the first
comer; that thoy were not notified
of the sale, and knew nothing about
it until after the sale had been made;
both sides have their advisers aud be
lievers and nro able to adduce -arguments
in support of the position they
take. It may be that a compromise
will be effected, and all go in together.
A party who came up from Skipa
non yesterday report that the work of
dismantling the vuesel began on
Saturday morning; and a great deal of
stuff has been got out. There are
twelve teams at work, and as the ves
sel at low water or even half tide
can be easily reached, the work of
taking out her cargo and fittings need
only be interrupted by foul weather.
There are aoout three inches of water
in her which swashed in through the
after ports; the vessel is working
down in the sand, though there are
those who say that even yet she could
by extra effort, be made to float.
A staging has been constructed, and
a sort of chute built yesterda' through
which barrels, etc., are slid to the
teams which carrT the goods to the
shore. Everything got out so far i3
iu first-rate condition, aud if fine
weather holds, the amount saved will
bo of great value, but one severe-blow
from the southeast would whelm the
ill-stranded vessel beyond all possi
bility of wreckage or salvage.

Loughrey arrested the girl on ;he
arrival of the steamer yesterday and
placed her in jail. The proprietor of
the den to which she was being taken
tried to have her released on a writ of
habeas corpus; the question came up
before Judge McGuire last evening,
who decided that tho girl should bo
held in custody until nine o'clock
this morning, when he would give the
case a hearing.
Dangerously 111.
The greatest apprehensions are felt
regarding the recovery of Capt Alex
ander, who is -lying at the lodgings of
Capt. Wass with typhoid pneumonia,
Ever since tho night the Queen was
stranded Capt. Alexander has been
suffering from acute pains in the chest,
and when the Queen arrived up on her
last trip from San Francisco, he was
obliged to relinquish command and
come ashore. For the last twenty-
four hours he has been delirious, and
the physicians have given strict orders
to allow no visitors. It is the sincero
wish of every member of the commu
nity that the captain will be spared to
many years of usefulness.
Portland's assessment roll is caus
ing considerable comment. It does
look a little singular when millionaires
are assessed for $15,000 and $1G,000
worth of property. The Orcrjonlan
pays on an assessed valuation of $12,
000, though a hundred thousand dol
lars would be cheap for that property,
However, it is different with a news'

sessed on one-tenth of that sum. Th
good will, the standing, the prestige
and influence of a newspaper are
matters that can not be made to ap
pear as tangible property on a tax
roll, and yet those are just the ad
juncts that make a newspaper.

Common Sense Remarks.
Aa a rule, partizan or personal
newspaper organs do not meet with
tho success that attends unbiased indi
vidual effort. The person or party
using an organ of this kind rarely if
ever finds it such a help as expected
and often it proves a detriment.
Ita utterances are received as coming
from a hired or prejudiced standpoint.
Free and enlightened Americans de
test nothing more than the efforts of
a newspaper that is nothing more
than a hired lackey when it should bo
an independent leader of public senti
ment. The individual wr partizan
cause that needs bolstering up by a
hireling newspaper is looked upon
with doubt aud distrust. Almost any
other kind of a paid agent may pur
sue his calling without being locked
upon as dishonest; but a newspaper,
never. Partizan or personal organs
rarely succeed in getting along amica
bly, either. Usually their bosses
disagree, or one is favored more than
another, and dissensions follow. Tho
same objection applies in a greater or
less degree to newspapers owned and
controlled by joint stock companies
for specific purposes. Rarely does a
newspaper succeed until it has been
the means of sinking thousands of
dollars; the amount lost is usually iu
proportion to the magnitude of the
enterprise. Stock holders have to
submit to assessments in order to
meet current expenses, and be
coming tired of this, they
turn upon the management as incom
petent, and not infrequently the whole
thiug passes into the hands of some
publishtr who takes the property and
assumes its liabilities. Very rarely
does a publishing business succeed tin
till it has passed through these stages
nd reached individual ownership and
management. Then, it has generally
changed bo much from what was or
iginally intended that the object has
been defeated as thoroughly as if the
business had died outright. It is tho
individual, free, outspoken, untrain
meled and fearless that wins admira
tion in the journalistic field. The
least snow ot partiality, or the mere
suspicion of being under undue influ
ence, will effectually cripplo his ef
forts. One reason wiry so few papers
succeed even at best is that few peo
pie learn to appreciate the enormous
cost of carrying them 011, until the
lesson has been learned in tho bitter
school of experience. People esti
mate the probable cash income of a
newspaper, and jump at the conclu
sion that it must be a literal mine of
wealth, when if they would but look
at the other side of the picture and
count up item by item the cash cost
of carrying it on, their wonder would
be aa to how itcouldbe made to pay ex

and Wigtotishire cleared for Queens
town with 117,825 bushels of wheat
worth about as many dollars. The
Cluisca and Jlomer are loading
salmon; the ScottlsJi Tar is finishing
cargo; the Tarn O'Shanter unloaded
yesterday and started eastward this
morning.
Yesterday afternoon three vessels
came 111; the tintish ship Tienj Uross
Menzies master, from San Pedro, in
ballast, the British bark, Martha
Fislicr, 811, Buckingham master, 7'
days from Newcastle, N. S. W., with
coal, and the British ship Kapunda
1018, Anderson master, 178 days from
London. The Abcrlemno, Jtavciwton
dale and Boxburgsfiire are at Baker's
bay. There is an English bark out
side with a pilot aboard.
