Mount Rainier is the grandest
of all the volcanoes of the North
west, and forms the mo.st promi
nent topographical object in
Washington territory,rising proud
ly above all other peaks, and tow

Cascade Range, which lies about
twentv miles to the eastward.
The surface features of the western
portion of the Territory have
been greatly modified by the great
lava flow of the volcanoes.. and no
less than four important riwrs of
the territorj' lise among the gla
ciers of the mountains the Nis
qually, Puyallnp and White riv
ers, which flow into Puget Sound,
and the Cowlitz, whirh, running
in a southwesterly direction, pours
into the Columbia. Snow and ict:
cover the top of the volcano, reach
ing downward for 5,000 or 0,000
feet, while with the most marked
contrast the broad base of the
mouutain supports a dark, dense
forest veaetation of trreat cran-
leur. The summit of Mr. Rain
ier is formed by three peaks, the
highest situated to the eastward of
the other two and separated from
them by deep and nearly inacces
sible gorges, although they attain
within a few hundred feet of the
same altitude. The main peak
presents a perfect circular cone,
with a crater about a qut:r:e: of a
mile in diameter. The altitude of

Mount Hood is situated directly !

about twenty-five miles south of
the Qolurabia river. It has an
altitude of 11,225 feet, above the
sea level, rising about 0,000 feet
above the main range, but the
long lava flows extending in every
direction from the base of the vol

mass nearly an rcfcnauts 01 pre

and Mount St. Helens, on the
north side of the Columbia river,
form with Mount Hood :i triangle
the area of which has been the cen
ter of great volcanic activity. The
summit of Mount Hood is in a

an ancient crater, opening to the
south. The crater is about one-

the encircling wall for three-fifths
of the circumference rising 430

fills the basin.
