Railroad Rumblings.
Theue is not a word from New
York regarding the great bear
movement on the Tillard stocks.
The presumption is, however, that
the worst is over, and a rally all
along the line will be started next
week.
The result of the great railroad
conference is reported to be satis
factory to all who participated,
which is a fair indication that the
dear public is to be cinched. The
N. P. managers say: "The great
point is that we can come to San
Francisco on the same basis as the
Central and Southern Pacific, while
they have to pay us for water car
riage to and from Portland, which
is the only Oregon point to which
they are admitted on an equal
basis with the Northern Pacific.1'
In editorial comment the Jiullctin
says the result is regarded as a do
feat to the Vdlard interests.
Something better was naturally
expected. There is now only one
course open, and that is for the
Northern Pacific to push its route
through to San Francisco and thus
be in a condition to make its own
through tariff between San Fran
cisco and New York.
Discussing the meeting, the
Chronicle thinks, "The meeting
can only be considered as a gather
ing of robbers of the people for
the purpose of amiably discussing
the subject of a division of the
spoils. The result of the meeting
however, has made, one thing quite
clear, and that is that the Northern
Pacific management is as shame
less a violator of its promises, ex
pressed and implied, as our own
heartless and corrupt monopoly.
Tne agreement arrived at by the
roads shows that they are not, in a
broader sense, competing lines.
They are rivals, it is true, but
their rivalry is as that of a couple
of robber bands who harmoniously
determine to parcel among them
selves the public highways. The
fixing of a common r oute between
the terminal points emphasizes the
bargain and trumpets to tho peo
ple the fact that they need have
no hope of relief from the. newly
completed transcontinental line,
there is one jjinall rifilc in this
pool-cloud through which a ray of
sunshine may be discerned. A
continuation of the extortionate
rates now in vogue cannot fail to
make plethoric the treasure chest
of both corporations, and the sight
of their immense earnings will be
sure to tempt rival roads into the
field. Until they make their de
but, the people of the Pacific coast
must consent to be gouged by
the amiable robbers who have
just formed this overland pool."
Rucknt developments among
the press inventors of the east
make it appear probable that in
ten years' time, or less, the entire
S3stem of newspaper press-work
will be completely revolutionized.
The new sy'stem seems destined
to be based on the lithographic
process, but with a zinc plate in
stead of a stone to work upon. A
clean impression of a page of type
taken on a hand-press with litho
graphic transfer ink, is transferred
to a zinc plate and the printing
done direct from that. Two such
plates, hooked on to cylinders in
juxtaposition print both sides sim
ultaneously and without any "off
set7' or difficult' in adjustment.
The effect will be to reduce the
number of cylinders at work, to
save wear and tear of type, and to
simplify and accelerate every
operation about a press-room.
Each plate so treated, it is claimed,
will be good lor 10,000 impressions,
and will be good for repeated use
by the mere washing away of the
transfer ink.
Beer ought to be a good deal
cheaper than it is if the Chicago
Times is correct in the assertion
that hundreds of tons'of tanbark'is
being used in its manufacture.
It learns, in fact, that "tanbark
and soda are the principal sub
stances used. A little rice malt
gives it body and makes it hold
the foam. Hemlock bark is a new
discovery in this respect and is
useful because it takes the place
to a certain extent, of both malt
and hops. It is not poisonous
but it certainly can not be said to
contain any nutriment. It adds
the pungent, bitter taste and gives
the dark reddish color to the It
quid. It is very cheap, aad tho
brewers who use it must grow rich
very fast.
A STATEMENT emnnntitur from
Poor's Railroad Manual is to
the effect that two-thirds of the
fifteen hundred railroad com
panies included in that book
paj' no dividends. This is the
class of investment which it
is claimed offers a better
prospect of profit for our people
than shipping. Give our shipping
the same freedom from harsh re
staiciions that railways have, man
age the property with shrewdness
and energy, and there is no doubt
that investors will find a safe and
profitable investment in shipping.
The nse of oil as a preventive
of disasters at sea is becoming
more frequent. In most of the
oases that we have heard of lately
the use has been attended .with
success, Jsmp-masters should bear
this fact in mind, and even if it
does not on the first experiment
realize their expectations thev
should not hesitate to give Tt a
second trial. It is th jujjh: that
the use of oil at the scene of the
Cairmmore disaster, last "Wednes
day night might have been of
practical benefit.
The Inter-Ocean kindly advises
Mr. Hoadly to put a Buckeye in
his pocket before he encounters
the Ohio malaria again. It is said
to be a sure-cure. It had better
be done now, suggests the Com
mercial Telegram, for the judge
may be short of Buckeyes in Oc
tober. The wire fence war will enarrc
an extra session of the Texas leg
islature. Some of the pastures are
fenced without a break for forty
miles or more, aud the only choice
left to travelers is either to drive
two days' journey out of their way
or cut the fence.
