mttm Vol. xix. Astoria, Oregon Sunday Morning, September 23, 1883 No. 150. A BOMBASTIC BRITON. Anfl r Surprise for the Ea3tern Journalist . A Victoria, B. C, speoinl says: 1 1 wns at the most western part of their journey that the newspaper section of the Villard party had one of their most peculiar experi ences. Upon arriving' at Victoria, the principal residents of the pro vincial government of British Co lumbia were invited to meet thoin at lunch on board the steamer .Yorlft Pacific, which Mr. Villard had furnished for their journe Among those present were the prime minister Hon. William Smyl-he, Tlon. John lioberson, provincial secretary, and minister of finance. Mr. Eedfern; the ma-or of Victoria; the American consul, and Mr. lliggins, editor of the 'oloni of Victoria. In reply to the toast "The Queen,'' the prime minister made a speech which was evidently an expression of the views on which he had long pond ered, and which no doubt repre sented ihe opinions of a large part of lu6 constituents. The annex ation of British Columbia or any part of it to the United States, he declared to be impossible, but said iie future would certainly bring to pass the annexation of that part of the Pacific Coast section of the United States to British Columbia. It was in that province, with its vast deposits of coal, with its cx haustless timber, with its unpara lelled harbors, with its illimitable wheat fields behind it, and with the new type it was breeding of men and women of unapproach able physique, that the start of empire was to REACH ITS FINAL ZENITH, Through the British Columbia pathway, Asiatic trade was 100 miles shorter than by San Fran cisco. That the fact of the absence of coal in California and speedy absorption of all available land tributary to it showed that San Francisco had about reached its highest development. Portland could not carry across the bars of the Columbia the magnificent commerce that Asia is offering. It was in British Columbia that the northwestwardly march of civilization was to reach its culmi nation. Passing beyond the de lineation of the future glories of this province, the premier, with less tact than might have been ex pected, proceeded to prophecy the certain dissolution of the Ameri can Union. "Itjs," he said, "a matter of degonVtioyi th me, and with niWCotljeFswHo have attentively cbnsidereuTh'e drift of affairs in the United States, that country cannot long continue un tivMed. Its elements of popu lation are too varied and the inter ests of its different sections are too diverse. The day will come when it must go to pieces. "When that day comes, British Columbia will be glad to lake in her open arms that Krtion of it which is her nearest neighbor." The indigna tion of the Americans at the utter ance of such sentiments was groat though as hosts they forebore to express it. It was in British Co lumbia, as United States consul, that Francis, who has been sta tioned here since 1SC1-, explained to us that the British rancor against the union during the late war reached its most venomous development. Victoria xvas a per fect hotbed of secession. It was hardly more safe for a union man to express his sentiments there than in Charleston. General Hazard Stevens recalls a case of an American friend of his, while defending the union cause during the war in the Driard House in Victoria was set upon by a crowd and after breaking a hotel castor over their heads he had to fight his way out with his revolver. At the river edge he found an ndian with a canoe, whom he induced to take him down Puget Souud to the United States mainland. It was such men as Premier Srnythe who FOSTERED THIS HATRED Of the American union and union men. A part of the subject to which Premier Smythe did not venture to allude was the strong feeling which has always existed in British Columbia in fayor of separation from the British empire. This reached fever heat when it seemed two years ago that the Canadian government would not carry out the projected Canadian Pacific railway to connect it with Canada and the Atlantic. Minis ter of Finance, Robison, who spoke after the Premier and in a depreciated tone, was one of a number of prominent Victorians who signed a petition to President Hayes to take British Columbia into the United States. Docu ments with his signature and that of others of his fellow citizens are now on file at Washington. Edit or Higgins, of the Colonist, who sat at the same table, was at the head of a movement which had his plans all laid at that time for seizing the government and gov ernment belongings of British Co lumbia and seceding from Great Britain as a preliminary to apply ing for admission into the Ameri-1 can T. nion, and had they carried out their plans the United States would now be in possession of that indispensible overland approach to Alaska, which we will now have to get liold of in some other way. Bill ATp's Idea of the Change Sys tem in Politics. One time there was an old tramp going around perusing the coun try and fooling the people of a living, and one day he got the odor of a good dinner as he neared a farm house, and so he pretended he was a clock tinker, and the un suspecting old farmer got him to work on his clock for his dinner. Well, he got his dinner first, and then told the old man to stand up in front of the clock and watch the swing of the pendulum and every time it went backwards and for wards to keep time with his hand and say: "Here she goes and there she goes," while he (the tramp) wpuld stand back at the door and get the beat of it by his ear, and so tell whether it was go ing too fast or too slow. So the old man stood up and began his little song: "Here she goes and there she goes; here she goes and there she goes," and he kept it up about ten minutes, and on looking around, fie found the tramp was gone. These office seekers scheme and plot and toot first one horn and then another and bob up serenely like a kildee on a clod of dirt until they get an office, and about the time they get fixed in it good, and have their feet on the banisters and a pipe in their mouth, a change has to be made and over the go. Here she goes and there she goes. Atlanta Consti tution. In Newark, N. J., it is said, there is quite an extensive artifi cial egg factory which will do the work of many thousand hens, turning out about a thousand eggs an hour, the quality being so good it is stated, that only a very close observer could detect the differ ence between them and hens' eggs. The yolk is said to be a mixture of Indian meal, corn starch and "several other inrredi ents." The eggs are sold at $13 a thousund, and all the company can make are taken by two New York houses. . The Greeks considered beauty so essentially a divine boom that the mother prayed to . Zens that her child might be, before all things, beautiful. Beauty seemed to tho Greeks the visible sign of an in ward grace, and an expression of divine ?ood will. Seargeant-at-arms or the House or Commons, Mr. D. T7. aTcDou nel, Ottawa, Canada, thus indorses the Great German liP.rnedy: "St. Jacobs Oil is a splendid remedy. I used it on my left hand and wrist for rheumatism, and. found it all that it is claimed to be." Everybody is using, and everybody is recommending to everybody's friends, Brown's Iron Bitters as a re liable iron medicine, a true tonic. IIalk;s JIoxev of Houeiiotxxd axi Tab will arrest every ailment of the lungs, throat or chest Food for Farmers' Thoughts. An exchange, commenting on the increase of population on this coast, and the crops raised here, gets off the following: This is a fruit country, but it is producing only as much fruit as its uses required ten years ago. It is a potato country, but the potato product has not in creased with the increased con sumption. It is a dairy country, but there has been no increase in the pro duction of butter to correspond with the larger demand. It is a cattle country, but the herds have diminished rather than increased under a demand, hither to unknown, and beef as high here as in New York. J We might run through the whole list of our products with similar results. Nothing is abundant but wheat. Farmers have a craze about wheat and grow it at a loss, to the ne glect of far more profitable crops. No note has been taken bvi them of the enormously increased demaud in all the towns of Oregon and Washington for fruits, vege tables, meats, eggs and dairy pro ducts, and in consequence we have the dearest market in the United States for every article of food except flour onl No country can produce all these things better than our ewn. The profit of producing them at prices much less than those now prevailing will still be very large. Neglect to produce them is the greatest drawback the country now suffers. What is the use of talking about starting manufactur ing enterprises when in a country so "well fitted, for agricultural pro ducts we don't even raise our own peas and potatoes, and eggs command 40 to 50 cents a dozen?
