priated, and expects to be able
considerably to reduce the amount

about a small donkey which he
sent up to his country seat for the

San Francisco that recent large
expenditures on improvements of
the South Pacific Coast railroad
and construction of the new pile
road two miles out into the bay.

poration called the San Francisco
and Colorado Railroad company
with Villard, president of the
Northern Pacific, at its bead. It
is also affirmed that he has bought
the North Pacific Coast railroad,
running from San Francisco north
along the coast to a point called
Duncan's mills, with the intention
to construct it to a junction with
his Oregon system. It is further
stated that he has bought the San
ta Maria road a short line run
ning from Port Harford to
Santa Barbara, and that he in
tends to build a connection to join
the South Pacific Coast road.
With this accomplished he would
have a continuous coast line from
Puget sound to within a short
distance of San Diego, in southern
California, a distance of about
fifteen hundred miles. Such ru
mors are whollv improbable, as m
the case of the Astoria railroad, he
is obliged to forego any additional
enterprises until at last relieved
of his present financial embarrass
ment.

Grave rumors are circulated in
New York respecting the success
of the Canadian Pacific. The
statement is made that the exodus
from Manitoba so far this season
has reached an alarming' propor
tion, and that emigrants from the
province exceeds the number of
immigrants into it. This appall
ing fact is not denied, even by the
railway authorities. Those who
have returned thero say that the
cold in winter is so intense that
ladies, especially, cannot leave
their Tires to go out and shop, and
therefore retailers cannot sell
enough to pay expenses during the
winter months.
Slavery in Cuba is described
by Mattie Young in the Kansas
City Times. She was born in
Nashville, Tenn.j and at the age
of 3, was stolen by . Robinson's
Circus. They made a dancing
girl of her, and took her to Cuba.
There, seven years later, she was
auctioned to a planter whose place
is eight miles out of Havana. She
goes on to say: "I was branded
