Planting Plsli in tlio Sea.
Prof. Batrd, not content with

j of the countrj-, is planning to re
plenish the failing supplies in the
sea. tie is tittmg up a naicncry at
j Wood's Hall, Mass., and oxpects
soon to be able to put into the wa
ter 500,000,000 young codfish an-!
nually It might seem that the
ocean is a large place in which to
distribute the fish, but it is said to
be the habit of the finny tribe to
return aunuallv to the shore
where thev are hatched and to
make that their spawning ground
in the future. Putting the fish
into the ocean, therefore, is prac
tically a move to stock the partic
ular portion of coast when the fish
are deposited. In this light it
seems not impossible that practi
cal results may be obtained from
the movement, it ii mtenUe-.i to

distnbute them as lar somii as tnei
Chesapeake. This is the itrat at
tempt that has been made to stock
the seas on an extensive scale.
Shad and salmon have been suc
cessfully bandied so as to replen
ish the stock in several rivers, but
the attempt to supply the cod fish
eries is new. Three years ago a
comparatively small numbor of
gray cod were put into the water
at Newburyport. They are now
frequently caught ail along the
coast as far north as Maine, though
they had never been found there
before, the catch being always the
common red variety. The success
! of this experiment leads Prof. Baird
to believe that the worn out fish-
ins: Grounds can be fully replen
ished, not onlv with cod, but also
with mackerel. Lobsters un; also
to be made the subject of culture
by the commission. Prof. Baird
looks upon fish culture as offering
j a practically unlimited field for the
increase of the world's food sup-
ply.
