By chartering deep sea-going vessels to carry rails and other material to Tacoma, for 82.50 per ten less than the same could be sent to Portland, the Northern Pa cific practically demonstrated that Puget Sound is the favorite and consequently the cheapest route. Walla Walla Union. All newspapers have a standard of justice, and it is common to all acknowledge error when corrected. The Union when it made that statement some time ago was shown its error by The Astoriax, and since then it has maintained silence on a subject of which it is obviously forgetful. The pitiful plea of ignorance will not avail the Union for it has been informed as to the facts in the case. At the time to which it refers, the N. P. R. R. Co., had some large vessels lying at Tacoma, where they had discharged railroad iron, and were obliged to take such rates as they could get. They were given no opportunity of naming a rate in the Columbia. The assumption that ships en tering the Columbia must go to Portland is another crooked part of the Unions argument; this, too, has been answered in The Astokiax. It is sufficient to say that the captain of the last vessel to sail from here for U. K., said it cost him $2,000 less in entire charges to load AT ASTORIA than at any other Pacific coast port that, he had ever been, and that all his port charges would not exceed S3,000. It is not necessary to make, ex clusive mention of Portland in ar guments concerning Columbia commerce. "Will the Union for once exercise its conscience, just lo keep it from getting rust)', and acknowledge its injustice in sup pressing facts and coloring state ments to the disadvantage of the seaport of Oregon? Tun N. V. Times says: The Presidential insect is buzzinjr airain under the hat of Hon. Stephen S. Field, an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, who has already blown one gentle blast out of his trumpet. No one would blow it for him. For months he has been forced to hear praises of McDonald, the old ticket, Holman, and other Demo crats of more or less eminence, but never has the name of Field fallen upon his longing cai. From his lofty and secluded station on the Supremo bench, he has scanned the country from ocean to ocean, and from the lakes to the Gulf for some signs of popular demand for Field, but no sign has gladdened his eye. "Can it be," ho has cried, "that they have forgotten me? 1 must remind them that I still lief :md still long to move from Capitol Hill to the White House. 1 will write a letter to a friend.'" Judge Field remembers that nearly all the sixty-five votes cast for him at Cincinnati came from the south, and therefore he tells his intelligent friend how he longs to do something for that part of the country. The tone of his letter leads one to suppose that he regards the north and south as still warring against each other, and in sore need of a peacemaker. It is a melancholy spectacle a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, who has had this high judi cial office for twenty years, throw ing aside his robe and bargaining lor the lavors of politicians. Bikmixgijax, Ala., known as the Magic City, has had a growth not less remarkable than that of some of the famous western towns In 1S73 it was a ragged village of 2,500 inhabitants. In that your it was nearly depopulated by a chol era epidemic. An era of railroad buildiug set in in the state and the intersection of two lines there brought Birmingham's population up to i.uuu m ibau. a. census just completed gives the city in 1883, 11,348 inhabitants. The as sessed value of property has in creased in three years from $3, 000,000 to 8.300,000. The growth of the town is due lo the development of the iron mines in the vicinity. A steamboat made almost en tirely of paper is about to be launched on the Ohio river. It is twent' feet long and can carry several tons. The sheathing is of solid paper three-eighths of an inch thick. A "Washington dispatch of the 13th says: The commissioner of the general land office said to-day, in reply to inquiries with regard to timber land frauds discovered in California. "I have had knowl edge of these operations for some time, and have had agents out there making an investigation. In consequence of reports received from them I have suspended action upon all timber land cases in California, Oregon and "Wash ington territory. Persons inter ested are not getting any patents, and they will not get any until I am satisfied as to the honesty or their entries." In explanation of the nature of their illegal operations Commissioner McFarland said: "Congress, by special act, provided for the sale to individuals of separate tracts of timber land in California, Oregon and Washington Territory. In the procurement by one person of a large number of such tracts through cooperation with others, who purchased them only to trans fer them to him, is a clear viola tion of the spirit of the law." The commissioner of the general land office has prepared a statement showing the number of 4ifiginal homesteads entered in the several states and territories sinco the'passsge of the homestead act, May 29, 1S62, to June 20, 1S83. The grand total of homesteads taken in this time is 00S,G32, of which 13,299 were in Oregon. The greatest number of home steads were entered in Kansas, while the next largest were en tered in Dakota, next in Minne sota. The smallest number was entered in Indiana. The first three homesteads were entered in Illinois in 1SG2. In 1S7S 4G homesteads were entered in the same state. The number of homesteads entered in Dakota gradually and rapidly increased from 75 in 18G3 to 2,201 during the fiscal 3'ear ended June, 38S3, the largest number of homesteads entered by any state or territory. During the last fiscal 3'ear 15S9 homesteads were entered in Ore son. The Times-Democrat of New Orleans publishes interviews with Governors of many southern states upon the prosperity and advance ment of their respective common wealths, from which it appcar.s that Alabama's cotton mills paid 15 per cent, dividends last 3'ear, her iron mills are wonderfully pro ductive, and her tax rate has been reduced; that Georgia is adding 150,000 spindles to its cotton mills each 3'ear; that Mississippi is rap idl3' adding to its mileage of rail roads; that Tennessee is making great strides since the state debt settlement: that Florida is re claiming vast tracts of wild lands and filling uji with settlers; that Louisiana's crops last 3'ear were the biggest ever gathered there; and that Texas has 37,000,000 acres of land to convert into a school fund, so that every child within her borders, white and black, can be educated without cost to the people. The secretary of the interior, in a decision just rendered, holds that pre-emption settlement initiated and filed in good faith is a bar to a timber entry under the verdict of June 3, 187S, for the disposal of timber lands in certain states and in Washington territory. He holds that -where a settler alleges that he has filled his declaration of intention to become a citizen, and fails for the time to secure record evidence of the fact, such evidence when procured may be filed at any time before a genoral disposition of the land, and when filed is conclusive as to his quali fications as a pre-emptor with re spect to citizenship. With the last issue of theN."i! Ki, comes a fac simile of that journal's first number, bearing date Sept. 3, 1S33. It is a littl sheet about one-fourth the size of The Daily Astorian, and is in striking contrast to its sturdy suc cessor of to-day. The New York of that day contained a quarter of a million of inhabitants. St. Paul, Minn., now claims, on the basis of its new directory, a population of S8,378. In 183S the total population counted but 3 souls, and in 1850 it was but 810. Our foreign trade is next to that of Great Britain. It might be larger were it not for the fact that London is the xlearing house of the commercial world. A late Panama report says that over ten thousand workmen are emplo3'ed on the Isthmus canal, most of .whom are from Jamaica.
