ASTORIA, OREGON: FRIDAY SEITEMBER 14, 1SS3 Jfo Celebration Yesterday. TnouGii the uncertainty attend ing the movements of the N. P. R. R. party did not call out the full measure of exertion, yet the preparations made, impromptu though they -were, for the recep tion of the visitors yesterday af ternoon were of a nature that must have been a matter of sur prise to the visitors and credit to the oity, had they seen fit to honor us with their presence. The clerk of the weather had sent a perfect day; the ships in the streams were bright with bannered bloom and radiant with streamers and sig nals; the city was swept and gar nished and from every flag pole flew the stars and stripes; every available craft that turns a wheel in Astoria waters had been en gaged; and as soon as the steamers rounded Tongue Point, fitting honors of artillery and musio would have been paid the stran gers and fitting words of kindliest welcome would have been spoken. To get telefjraphic communication with Portland was impossible, and not till the Fleetwood came down at two o'clock was it known that the railroad autocrat had changed his plans, and sent his satellites to the Sound. Astoria would have been glad to meet and welcome the distin guished gentlemen who came across the sea to witness a great event, to see a great country and who missed seeing the best of it by their host's sudden change of programme. They have our sin cere regrets, and should any of them in their individual capacity see fit to visit the mouth of the grandest Pacific river he will see a sight that will well repay him for his trouble and receive a hearty welcome from Astorians who are proud of their city, its position, its growing importance and its future. To-day the artists and journalists that accompany the partr will bo here, and as a matter of course will be courteously received and made welcome during their stay with us. The London Times, of the lllh, in its leading article says: "It is difficult to avoid suspicion that the Canton riot was directly connect ed with the excitement caused by French operations in Tonquin. The time has arrived to more ef fectually secure British lives and property in China. The Chinese cannot be too forcibly impressed with the truth that all foreigners are not Frenchmen, and that the enormous interests of England should be vigilantly protected AVe can no longer postpone sub stantial reinforcement to our fleet in China. There exists no reason to believe that either France or China is in a mood to invoke England's mediation. The French have not reached the preliminary stage of realizing the perilous course they have entered upon." Astoiua presented a beautiful appearance yesterday afternoon, and it was a pretty good sight of itself to see the city decked out and the splendor of the September sunlight without any further ad juncts. But Astorians feel slight ed. Every little cross-road in the northwest had an invited represent ative except Astoria, and that the second city in the state should be so completely ignored is naturally a little displeasing. When As toria's big day comes let it be for us to act with courtesy and mag nanimity. The New York Post regarding the city church-bell nuisance, says: "The church-bell anywhere is an anachronism, lingering since the time when the priest was the only person in the parish who had, or could read, a watch or clock. In modern circumstances nobody needs a vocal call to church any more than to his office or to the theater." AsroniA, you have your un surpassable fisheries, you have a fine country contiguous to you;do velop it, it belongs to you, you are bound to be its distributing point. Standard. "No pent up Uutica contracts our powers, but," etc., and don't vou forget it. Notiiixo can surpass in desola tion a Nevada town where a mine ha3 "petered out," unless it is deserted city in the Pennsylvania oil regions. Henhy Clews and Jay Cooke are again rich, but Mr. Clews alone is in active business at the old stand. He lost $5,000,000 in one day in September 1873. He was so poor that he had to send his wife to her own family for six months to support. He is worth-, to-day, it is said, at least $2,000, 000. The New fork Times says James G. Blaine will not be a candidate for the presidency next year, but that be will throw his influence in favor of some man who will make Blaine one of his cabinet ministers. His whole am bition now is to again become' secretary of state. Attention- is called to the fact that J efferson Davis is still on bail, having been released after his capture at the close of the war upon giving good and sufficient sureties, and the bond still holds rood. Dj:. Scott, the author of the Scott bill in Ohio, says the state will give Foraker 30,000 majority, and that the legislature will bo Republican. He finds his meas ure popular in all parts of the state. Two hundred Republican meet ings are announced to come off in Iowa, mostly before the middle of September. They call it a "fighting campaign" there. Dakota Territory is four times as big as Ohio, and Alaska is four times as big as Dakota, and the rest of the United States is four times as big as Alaska. Galveston harbor now has a depth ol fifteen feet on the bar, due to the jetties which are being built for the improvement of the channel. Uncle Sam has 47,932 post offices, and over a million unhappy sons who have vainly sought po sitions in them. New York city has a popula tion of 1,300,000. There arc but 01,052 persons who own real estate in the city. NEW TO-DAY. Picked Up. OFF CLATSOP SPIT : l case peaches.
