The rain fell all day yesterday,
effectually putting out the forest tires
and removing all fear from the minds
of many who have been in a constant
state of dread for months.
Tho stepson of Mr. Riddle, who
was brought down in a paralyzed
condition from Knappa, last Friday,
died at the hospital yesterday morn

The work of lightering the C. IK
Bryant began yesterday. As far as
reached the cargo is uninjured,
though there will be doubtless some
damage to that stowed underneath.
Despite its arrogance the Oregon
im is to be commended for its correct
and generally impartial'account of oc
currencoc. It is tho only newspaper,
beside The Ahtoeiax, that had a cor
rect statement in regard to the strand
ing of tho Queen.
Arthur Foley, a four-year-old
boy, who strayed on board tho Co

The Victoria arrived in yester
day with freight from San Frahcisco;
tlie State came in at an early hour
with vegetables and fruit for Astria,
nt which every one rejoiced and was
exceedingly glad, for the onforced
unloading of the Queen had caused a
dearth of provisions. The Orsgun
sailed at A. r. at.

has been gotten out of hor perilous
situation on Sand Island and is rid of
the fate of many wrecks that have
strown that desolate place.
We direct attention to the grammar,
diction, implication, and assertion of
the above. It is from tho Oregon
Mist, and is given as a sample of the
comment that idiocy prompts. In
this case there was no intent to be
wrong, but it was easier to make
a
mibtakc than a mental effort at
curacy.

elements of cood fortune? Possibly
tho Walla Walla Union wants to

About the Size of it
There is no business in which men
can undertake greater risks on less
capital than the theatrical. A specu
lator goes in with a few hundred dol
lars, ecrapes all his credit together,
gathers a lot of amateurs or starving
actors and actresses, tempts them
with largo promises, buys a job lot of
old printing and starts off into tho
country with a piece which has either
never bien tried or has been a failure
Any successful piece falls into the
hands of tho larger speculators, who
have greater facilitius for imposing on
the public. The company gets along
through the firat few towne all right,
but it is seldom long before they get
into difficulties; then money gives out,
then baggage is seized for debt and
the actors and actresses arc left
stranded in some place where they
have no friends, and have either to be
sent homo by the charity of the pub
lic or have to struggle back through
all sorts of discomforts and miseries,
some of them becoming applicants to
the Actor's Fund. This does not only
a severe wrong to the people them
selve3j but it disgusts the people with
theatrical shows and genuine, well
organized, good companies are not
patronized. Every season these
gangs are found in detachments, brok
en up and starving, all over the
country, aud every season another
batch shirts out to meet the same fate.
If the reliable managers of tho lead
ing cities will combine with tho mana
gers of tho smaller theaters on their
circuits to bar out all attractions that
are not genuine, they will not only
save an amount of misery annually
recorded in the newspapers, but they
will relieve the public of a great deal
of unpleasant experience, and they
will find their ample reward in the
profits they will make on the com
panies they do send out. As it stands,
the theatrical business is one of
quackery and imposture. There arc
only few mou in it who are able- to
keep their engagements with tho pub
lic The hand-tu-mouth policy is tho
only oue possible to most of the ad
venturora, and bad plays, bad actors
and aJouchy performances arc all they
can offer. This is simply beating the
public aud it is a point which should
be taken into oarnest consideration by
all whoso capital is invested in legiti
mate theatrical enterprises for their
own sakes as well as for the sake of
the public, who are not willing to bo
without amusement, but who do not
care to support institutions that one
half the time take advantage of them.
S. F. Chronicle.
Two of a Kind.
Tho New Tacoma Ledger divides the
honors with the Portland ifcics for
mean assertions regarding the strand
ing of the Queen. The Ledger in
winding up a contemptible fling, says:
If the sea had been as rough on
Tuesday afternoon as it usually is on
the bar, tho telegrams that burdened
the line irom Astoria to San Francis
co would have carried tho news of tho
drowning of hundreds of people, in
stead of gratulations upon their prov
idential escape from watery graves.
All that the abve precious mor-
ceau needs is the word "only" after
the fourth word, to exactly express
what was in the mind of the creature
that wrote it a regret that the acci
dent was not a catastrophe.
The programme for Henry Yil-
lard's guests this week includes two
visits to Astoria. On Thursday, the
13th, at 9 a. M. tho steamers Wide
We.il and Thompson convey the special
party hero and return to Kalama,
sleeping in tho train, which will be
transferred to bank opposite Kalama.
On Friday, at 0. a. m. the general
guests will start on the Columbia from
Portland, proceed to Astoria, and re
turn to Calama at 9 l. M. Owing to
the limited stay no general reception
will be given as was first contemp
lated. ;
The directors of the Oregon and
California R. R. company, give
notice that they have filed sup
plementary articles of incorporation
authorizing the corporation to en
gage in new enterprises, to increase
its preferred or common capital stock,
or both, and to construct and equip
a railroad and telegraph line with
all necessary branches from a
point at or near Forest Grove in
Washington county, Oregon, to As
toria, in Clatsop county, Oregon to
connect with its existing railroad, and
to operate and maintain the same

The steamer Emma Hayward nar
rowly escaped serious disaster at the
New Tacoma wharf the other morn
ing. It was very smoky and foggyr
and as 8he glided into her accustomed
berth, she found herself suddenly al
most afoul of the ship Two Brothers,
which unconcernedly lay in the way
without giving tho least signal
of warning to the approach
ing steamer. It was a narrow
escape for the Hayward and all on
boardjtfor nothing could have saved
the steamer had she struck the ship,
and with her would bej'ond doubt
have been lost a majority of those on
board. Intense inuicuation was
aroused among those on the steamer
at the carelessness and disregard of
those on board by the ship. Post-Intelligencer.
Cigars With a Plavor.
"Most people like a flavored ciear'
said an Indianapolis druggist to a
Journal reporter who had stepped in
to buy a weed. "Try one of these, L
think you will like it" The reporter
took one of the brand recommended
to him, lighted it and began to smoke.
I havo to put np considerable cigar
flavor," continued the drug man,
"and I suppose some people wouldn t
find it so difficult a thing to quit
smokiug, if they knew what the popu
lar flavors are made of. On second
thought, though, I don't think it
would make any dffference. The fact
that the old cigar-stumps are worked
over into cigarettes and smoking to
bacco, though thoroughly ventilated in
the newspapers, never cured a smoker
of the habit."
"Tell me something about these
flavors," said the reporter.
Well, since you insist on it, I
will. A flavor 1 have made a good
deal of it's a flavor that, in the
language of the trade, make3 a "ten
cent cigar for-five cents' is mado as
follows: unm gulac, gum tolu,
tonqua beans and essence of pineapple,
of each one ounce; valerian root, two
ounces; laudanum (tincture of opium),
one ounce; oil of rose, mx urop3; Ja
maica rum, Half a pint; macerate for
thirty-six hours and pour off, U3e one
ounce to a pint of port wine, to blow
on the tillers.
'A good many men who get at
tached to a certain brand of cigars
don't know what charms 'em. It's the
opium, and they get in the habit of
using it unconsciously. Valerian
taken habitually renders the heart's
action more rapid but feebler, causes
huricd respiration and may occasion
congestion of tho kidneys. If its use
is long continued, it may paralyze the
spinal cords, so tho books say. Its
action on the tongue and throat is
more prompt and apparent, frequently
causing epithelium. As to opium, its
internal effects are well known. It
would take an almanac to enumerate
all the diseases it occasions. It's
opium and valerian that makea tho
artificially flavored cigar popular."
What is Good for Breakfast
A delicious breakfast omelet is pre
pared by mixing the ingredients in
the usual way and then placing whole
apricots in the golden envelope before
it is rolled. Another that was born
beneath Spanish skies is similarly
made, with the introduction of sliced
bananas laid in the compound after be
ing delicately browned in tho sweetest
of butter, thon turned in tho omelet.
This has been discussed with appreci
ation by the writer at the table of a
Spanish fnend. Leigh Hunt, who was
a mild epicure in his way, protested
against other food for breakfast than
toast, ham, tea or coffee, eggs, and al
ways something potted. In our cli
mate it may be added, aud always,
fruit the year around. For breakfast
eat fruit. The earth and sky shares its
life. Its flesh, filled with suushino, needs
no human basting. Its veins are sweet
with fragrant dew formed into lifo by
soft sighing winds. The ardent kisses
of the summer sun paints tho blushing
cheek of the velvety peach, and fills
with wine the purple grapes ensphered
in purple luxuriance, that drop
through the leafy root of trellised
arches. Such a breakfast is patriarch
al. It has a flavor of Arcadian days
and the mythologic ago of a dead past
Manliattan.
The steamer Idaho arrived from
Whatcom this morning about 5
o'clock. In coming down, tho fog was
thickor than pea soup, and tho
steamer ran against Lnmini island four
different times. Tho last time, which
was about 10 A. M. yesterday, she ran
high and dry upon the shore where
she had to remain until tho tide arose
at 4 r. as. In striking against the
island a hole was knocked in her bow
and considerable injury done to her
keel. Jsho was patched up tempo
rarily, but will probably bo laid up
ior repairs. aeaiue Jieraia.
The Grocers Gazette issued a
special edition on August 18th, which
was largely devoted to the Fisheries
Expedition held in London. Refer
ring to the display by the United
btatcssays: "The United States of
America fill such an amount of space
of the Exhibition as constitutes their
Court the largest outside the British
department. In variety and com-
pletncss of illustration the collection
is unsurpassed; and selected from tho
fortjt-three distinct fisheries carried
on in different localities of tho states.
The most important contribution in
the quantity and value of tho produco
are here to be seen. It ia also tho
only department in the Exhibition
which has been arranged historically.
Among the exhibits specially mention
ed aro thoso of Badollet & Co., Tilla
