THE FRENCH IN AN AM.
If tbere is any European who
has a perfect knowledge of the
Asiatic character combine with ab
solute freedom from traditional
prejudices and worldly interests
it is "Chinese" Gordon. In a let
ter written from Jaffa to the N. Y.
Herald, he says that the alien and
hated Tartar dynasty, that since
the seventeenth century has ruled
over China, a dynasty, moreover,
which General Gordon himself
once saved from ruin, is, in the
event of war, menaced with almost
total destruction. The fall of this
dynasty is fraught with the most
important consequences, otrc of
which, strange as it may at first
sight seem, would be to change
the whole aspect of the politics of
Europe.
situated witmn a weok's mar
of the Russian frontier, accessible
to England by the Taku forts, and
liable to be starved out by any
enemy in command of the sea and
Grand canal, Pekin is the most
vulnerable inland city in the
empire. Should the war break
out, the emperor would be forced
to choose one of two evils. If he
wishes to avoid being captured by
the enemy he must go to central
China, where he would be sure to
be extinguished by his own sub
jects. If he wishes to avoid this
fate he must remain at Peking,
where his dynasty would perish
by the sword of the conqueror; so
that the imperial Tartar, no matter
which" way he turns, is sure to
catch one of his own country
mcn. General Gordon says that an'
war between France and China
would be dangerous to France,
because of the certainty of com
plications with England. Perhaps
an Anglo French war would, after
all, be a good thing. In spite of
hypocritical protestation to the
contrary, England and France
never really enjoyed each others
society so much as when they
were blazing away at each other
st Watorloo. There is a latent
antipathy between the two nations,
and to bring this antipathy into
activity would have a wholesome
effect of clearing the atmosphere.
A correspondent from Hong
kong writos to the Herald on the
Franco-Chinese war. lie says:
The two powers who can coerce
China are Russia and England.
Russia could march without much
difficulty on Peking. This march
would not hurt trade; so England
would not interfere. England
could march to the Ta-Kiang and
Peking and no one would object,
for she would occupy the treaty
porte. But if France tried to do
so England would objoct. Thus
it is that China will only listen to
Russia and England.
A dispatch from Hongkong
states that the French General
Bouet has demanded of the war
department an additional re-enforcement
of 5,000 men. The
country is still suffering from
floods. The French admiral has
issued a notice declaring all ports
iu Anam, including Saigon, in a
state of blockade.
A dispatch to the London 2'imcs
from Hongkong saj's: It is re
ported that 15,000 Chinese troops
have crossed the "Wongker and
proceeded to Naidering. A squad
ron of vessels is loading at Shang
hai with troops, ammunition and
torpedoes.
Don't Talk About the Sexinon.
My friend go home, but don't
talk about this sermon and say:!
"I wish my boy had been there
this morning;" you are here, any
how. Don't look across the street
and say, "If that shrew had only
been there, she would have
got a good lesson." You ajrc
here. Carry it to your household.
Say to your children as they mark
your imperfection in these re
spects, "I confess my sin." Let
it be the law in your family:
speak evil of no one, think evil of
no one, rejoice not in anybody's
failings, ridicule none in such a
sense as shall diminish their stand
ing with others, or be a source of
pin to them. Carry yourself as
the sun carries itself to-day riding
in the heavens. There is not an
insect so gauzy, there is not a
worm so mean, there is not a tree
so tall, there is not one single, sol
itary that has a drop of life in it
which the glorious sun does not
treat like a prince, pouring its
own light and life and warmth on
it and into it. Be thou like the
sun. Carry light and -,varmth,and
sweetness, and shall ye be to the
children of God. II. W. Bcteher.
On the Nehalem.
"Whatever drawbacks there may
be to the enjoyment of life here,
ill health is not likely to be one of
them, Some men are never con
tented anywhere, while others are
"always at home" and satisfied. I
believe I am one of the latter.
chllerc in this isolated valley, six
miles from a neighbor, twelve
from a postoflice and thirty from a
store, hemmed in by the everlast
ing hills, living in a log hut
chinked with moss, 1 am well
contented. 1 have good health
and a good appetite to enjoy the
rough fare, and am surrounded by
some of God's loveliest works.
A little prairie, surrounded by an
evergreen forest, on three sides of
which runs the very beautiful
north Nehalem. softly murmuring
over its rocky bed and passing in
its course in full view of our door.
On the opposite side, and also in
full view from our door, a lovely
cascade falls over a rocky bluff
and is scattered into spray ere it
reaches the river, forty feet be
low, filling the air with its music
night and day. And, too, for
those who delight in procuring a
goodhy portion of their food from
wood or stream, wc have in the
woods a plenty of meat in the
shape of elk, deer, bear and pheas
ant; or fruit, salmon berries,biack
berrics, thimbleberries, and huck
leberries of four varieties; iu the
water we have plenty of fish of
various kinds. Then we can add
to all this plenty of hard work,
and the most particular ought to
contented, "but some men are so
queer."
And still there is no rain and
grass is well dried up. The dai
rymen are sorely tried, but what
they will lack in quantity will
partly be made up in prioe; even
those on tide lands will have a
short supply this 3'ear something
very unusual. It generally rains
more here in the summer than
east of the Coast Range, but this
year it is the reverse. We have
had no rain to lay the dust, if we
had any, since the first of June.
Several have asked me the ques
tion: ""What is the chance of get
ting good government claims on
on the Nehalem?" Through your
kindness, 1 wish to answer all at
once. I do not wish to have any
come and say I raised hopes not
anticipated; so I will speak plain
ly: Thsre are only a few desira
ble claims yet vacant, and they
are unsurveyed. There are also a
very few good railroad claims.
Four land hunters were at my
house this week, and they all went
off unsatisfied; the wanted claims
all in the same vicinity and could
not be accommodated. I am well
suited here, yet I would not ad
vise anyone to leave a good home
to come here.
The second daT after 1 located
on my claim, a neighbor came up
and asked me if I did not want
some elk meat. I told him that
elk meat would go well about
now. "Well," says he, "we will
get it." So off wc' started, and in
a short time we had a Gne speci-j
men of that noble animal at our
feet. We had fine sport and got i
about 400 pounds of stripped!
meat, together with horns, tallow
and hide in all worth about 40. !

The Yellowstone Visitors.
A Tribune special from the
Yellowstone, via Livingston, M.
T., says: The president's party is
very much chagrined with the re
sult of the fishing to-day in the
Yellowstone river. The trout are
not only soft, but infested with
parasites. The cause is supposed
to be sulphur and hot water"pour
inr into the stream. Rufus Hatch
and ton of his party returned to
day, played out. He said his
sickness was only a subterfuge.
He declares that he visited the
president in the disguise of a cow
boy and sent out a report of his
sickness to make the ruse com
plete. The president tried to hide
from him in an undiscovered re
rion, but he succeeded in jrcttmg
all correspondents into his pres
ence by his ruse. Rufus is happy
because tho president had to send
and purchase supplies of him, and
says that the roads are so abomi
nable in the park that his excel
lency will recommend an appro
priation of $100,000 for their im
provement. A great joko was
played on Hatch. He stopped
over night with the only rival
hotelkeeper in the park, up at Fire
Hole, and for this and a lunch tho
man charged him $97. Rufus was
so mad that he ordered his men to
erect a tent hotel to-day right at a
point near by, which shall cut off
travel from his rival. He says he
will bust that hotel if he has to
provide free accommodations.
