    ASTOSIA, OREGON:
SATUKDAY.
.SEPTEMKEi: 8, 16S8
The Last Spike.
To-day Hcnr' Villard, presi
dent of the Northern Pacific R. R.
Co., will drive the last spike on
the road, and that transcontinen
tal line will be a finished fact No
event since the acquisition of Or
egon by the United States has had
more potent effect on the future
of this section of the Union. The
stimulus occasioned by the build
ing of the road has been felt in
every nook of the northwest. Fa
cility of communication solves the
problem of settlement in this
country, and every preemption
claim in Oregon and Washington
is enhanced in value just so much
by the completion which is cele
brated along 2,000 miles of terri
tory to-day.
As years go it puts the coun
try a century in advance of what
it would be without the road.
The future, and its conditions de
pend largely upon ourselves. Ve
will, of course, he temporarily in
fluenced in sentiment and common
action by the immigration that
will immediately result, but in a
wider sense the destiny of the
commonwealth is in the hands of
the dwellers hero to-da'.
In eighteen days it will be ten
years since Jay Cookers failure
threw down the splendid scheme
that that financier had planned,
and set back indefinitely the com
pletion of the road. The history
of its building since the fall of
1879 is more like romance than
reality, and even now it is diffi
cult to realize that a line of rail
way connects Oregon with the
east. More than fourteen years
ago the two oceans were united
by rail at 'Promonton' Point,
Utah, by ex-Go v. Stanford. The
nation then stood upon the tip toe
of expectant interest, and the
blows that drovo the golden spike
reverberated across earth's farthest
sea. "When, three years ago, the
second line was completed, but
little general interest was mani
fested, and now that the third line
is finishedjits completion is looked
upon as a matter of course, and
the commercial import of tin fact
outranks the sentimental or so
cial ideas naturally resultant.
The difference in the surround
ings is striking. "When Stanford
finished the Central Pacific he
was surrounded by a crowd of fi
nanciers; Villard to-day is sur
rounded by an assemblage of for
eigners. The contrast is signifi
cant. It is Vil'ard's idea to bring
a new German)' into the great ter
ritory through which his road
runs, and for this he has interested
leading men in the land of his na
iivity and brought them out to
witness the consummation of the
promises made them that they
may go back and tell what they
have seen. His shrewdness is no
less evinced in the care with
which he has selected representa
tive men in every department: no
tably journalism. The foremost
journals of the world are repre
sented there to-day, and through
their columns two hundred mil
lion intelligent people in Europe
and America will read of what
was done and of the wonderful
country that made possible such
mighty enterprise.
To us, on this quiet bay, down
which floats the commerce of an
Empire, the celebration has the
semblance of an echo; we only
catch the reflected sound and the
direct contact is not ours to feel.
In the wisdom of the men who
havo built the road it has been
deemed best to stop one hundred
miles from the seaand as they
are the men who are advancing
the money it is not for us to ques
tion their mode of operations,
Rather can we of Astoria congrat
ulate ourselves.
Privilege usually involves re
sponsibility. Astoria is in this in
stance happily exempt. TVc of
Astoria and vicinity shall derive
immense benefit from the comple
tion of the Northern Pacific Rail
road, while at the same time, by-
reason of our grand geographical
position we are forever free from
the restrictions that may be im
posed upon less favored places
Astoria at the mouth of the grand-
est river oi me jracinc will ever
be a free port untramelled by the
arbitrary distinctions of a freight
schedule, while enjoying all the
augmented facilities that must
necessarily result from the com
pletion of the road. For this
have we of Astoria more than or
dinary cause of gratulation. True,
we are comparatively silent: no
bugles sound, uor cannon roar.; but
those are only the outside attri
butes. Wc are content to reap
the gain and bide our time for
greater prominence. Why should
Astoria sigh for the jrreen fruit
that by-and-by, in the fullness of
ripeness shall fall into our "laps?
Hence it is in order for The
Daily Astokiax, the farthest west
of all the thousands of daily news
papers of the Union, to send
greeting to the gentlemen who
shall take part in the ceremonies
to-day; to assure them that we
are with them in spirit, that we
are in unison with them in senti
ment; that we are oi one mind
with them in intent, and that no
community more heartily rejoices
or takes greater pleasure in the
fact that the N. P. R. R. is com
pleted, than do we of Astoria to
day. California was convulsed by
an earthquake last Thursday.
