THE COST OF A BOY.
Some one asks, what is the
average cost of bringing a good
sort of a boy, with the ordinary
advantages of city life, to the age
of seventeen? The Standard
thinks it is about five thousand
dollars. These figures are doubled
by the time the fellow has reached
his majority, that is, if you put him
through a course of collegiate
intellectual sprouts. Perhaps a
bad boj" costs fully as much, even
if he has not been to college. This
computation does not include the
value of the mother's tears and
prayers, or the worry and star
spangled talk of the father, com
monly referred to by the boy as
the "Guvner." Most men who
have had a bad boy or two on
baud, will duly appreciate what
we mean, and agree that the actual
financial estimate is none too high.
Of course if at sixteen the young
man goes out frequently with the
"boys,1 has a hankering after a
variety actress and faces the
music of the "chips," the financial
estimate is far too small. But re
lative to the ordinarily good boy,
the father will consider five thou
sand dollars about the figure, and
some of them will be observant
enough to wonder if there is any
other investment of equal magni
tude that is made with as much
carelessness and stupidity. A
piece oi property upon which five
or six thousand dollars must bo
expended would seem to any busi
ness man to be deserving of the
most careful treatment that its
owner's mind and intelligence
could devise, but in the case of a
boy the money is generally ex
pended as a matter of course, with
little or no definite object except
to keep the property in existence,
and to save the owners from find
ing it a nuisance, to .himself." A

good according to its yield or its
promise to yield, no matter if much
painstaking treatment may first bo
necessar3r, but a boy who passes
for best, is merely he who makes
less trouble. The most promising
colt is the one that is the most
irrepressible, but the irrepressible
boy of a family is sure to be the
least valued after he has become
to old to be a mere plaything, and
when he is not ruined by being
allowed to manage himself he is
quite likely to bo mismanaged
until good for nothing. To regard
a boy in the mere light of an in
vestment and treat him according
ly would .seem cruelly cold and
heartless, yet the natural result of
such an estimate would be more
beneficial to all concerned than
the present system is, for it would
compel considerable personal at
tention by the owners, whereas the
usual plan is to hire somebody
else, nurse or teacher, to stand in
the parents place in all matters
that are not included in lodging,
food and clothes, so that the
owners may have more time to de
vote to business or pleasure. A
million times the evils of this plan
has been illustrated, "but the
blundering goes on. It is about
time that the boy and his sister be
treated according their economic
importance.
When the cleiks employed in
the pension bureau at "Washington
went to their work on a recent
morning, they found on the steps
a man, his wife, and their three
children. Parents and children
were in rags and covered with
dust. The man said that he had
been a private in the First Infant
ry, stationed at Fort Scott; that he
was discharged some two ''ears
ago and had filed a claim for a
pension, but was not satisfied with
the proceedings'of his lawyer; and
that he, with his wife and child
ren, had come on foot from the
Black Hills in the hope of getting
the money which he believed was
due him. The acting commission
er promised to learn as quickly as
possible whether the man was en
titled to a pension. He said that
he had known of men walking
from places in Oregon and other
points as remote, to learn that they
had been deceived and that they
had -no claims against the government.
Xewhaven Fishwives.
Most picturesque of all the fig
ures to be seen in Edinburgh are
the Xewhaven fishwives. With
short, full, blue cloth petticoats,
reaching barely to their ankles;
white blouses and gay kerchiefs;
big, long-sleeved cloaks of the
same blue cloth, fastenened at the
throat, but frying loose, sleeves
and all, as if thrown on in haste;
the girls bareheaded; the married
women with white caps, standing
up stifT and straight in a point on
the top of the head; two big
wicker-work creels, one above the
other, full of fish, packed securely,
on their broad shoulders, and held
in place by a stout leather strap
passing round their foreheads,
they pull along at a steady, strid
ing gait, up hill and down, carry
ing weights that it taxes a man's
strength merely to lift. In fact,
it is a fishwife's boast that she will
run with a weight which it takes
two men to put on her back. By
reason of this great strength on
the part of the women, and their
immemorial habit of exercising
it; perhaps also from other causes
far back in the early days of
Jutland, where these curious New
haven fishing folks are said to
have originated, it has come about
that the Nowhaven men are a
a singularly docile and submissive
race. The wives keep all the
iiinney which they receive for the
fish and the husbands take what is
given them a singular reversion
of the situation in most commu
nities. I did not believe this
when it was told me, so I stopped
three fishwives one day, and with
out mincing matters, put the
question .direct to them. Two of
them were 3Toung, one old. The
young women laughed saucily
and the old woman smiled,., but
they all replied,., unhesitatingly',
that they had the spending of all j
the money.

the old woman, with severe em

An English journal pays a flat
tering tribute to American intelli
gence when it remarks that "a
good percentage of the inventions
are of American origin. In that
country of geniuses everybody in
vents." Yet there is a ridiculous
side to the question. Somo of the
applicants for patents create a
laugh at their expense if they do
not get the protection of the gov
ernment for their inventions. One
man claims protection for the ap
plication of the Lord's Praj'er, re
peated in a loud voice, to cure
stammering. Another asks pro
tection in behalf of a new and
useful attachment of a weight to
a cow's tail to prevent her switch
ing it during the milking opera
tion. A lady patented a hair
crimping pin, which she specified
might also be used as a paper
cutter, a shirt-supporter, a child's
pin, a bouquet holder, a shawl
fastener, or a book-mark. A
"horse refresher" is a hollow pit
perforated with holes, and con
nected with a flexible tube, with a
water reservoir in the vehicle, so
that the driver can give the ani
mal a drink without stopping.
The "snorer's friend" is a luxuri
ous contrivance to be attached to
church-pew backs, so that one
may sleep through a dull sermon
in peace and comfort without at
tracting attention.

The Smokiest Season.
The Portland Telegram affirms
that it is an error to suppose that
the present season is the smokiest
and dryest we have experienced.
The fact is that the summer of
1868 the sun during the greater
part of September was almost en
tirely obscured even at mid da,
the sky presenting a coppery ap
pearance from horizon to zenith
several hours t'ach day. The
light was so obscure that for some
days succeeding the 20th of Sep
tember, schools, which had gen
erally taken up for the fall term,
were compelled to close at 2
o'clock i. at., on account of the in
sufficient light, and chickens, de
luded into the belief that twilight
had come, went to roost. Rain
fell early in October, quenching
the forest fires and clearing the
atmosphere; and the discomforts
of the season vanished from mem
ory, just as those of this season

The Indians all over the North
west are fast losing their purity of
blood, for among them may be
noticed the peculiar features of the
Tartar, the Caucasian and even
the African. Miscegenation has
been and is common among them,
and a full-blooded Indian will
soon be the exception to the rule.
All over the territory are found
the "kitchen middens." or piles of
clam shells, deposited as the
kitchen leavings of centuries, be
neath which, as below the mounds
upon the shores of the Baltic, havo
been discovered relics of pre-his-toric
man, the cave dwellers, show
ing bones of men and animals
(Avhich, bearing the imprintof hu

tors, as well as those of the Indi
ans, were cannibals and eaters of
