ASTORIA, OREGON: WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 5, 18S3 TL. P. F USHER, Rooms 20 ami 21, Merchants' Exchange Building, is our only authorized agent in Snn Francisco, and any contracts made uv him will be recognized. Tub Daily and Wkekly AsToniAX arc kept on file at his agency CnmGrano Saiis. A Chicago dispatch says: A son of Edwards Pierrepont stated last Monday, that the Tribune in reference to the scheme for ac quiring British Columbia, had penetrated the most important state secret which had been open ed since the rebellion. He ad mitted practically that his father's trip to Alaska was m reference to this very thing. As au ex-miuis-ter to the court of St. James he is in a position to know whereof ho speaks. He says that in estab lishing the boundary line with British Columbia a tremendous error was committed. At present it is impossible to get into Alaska, where all our fisheries and mininsr industries are, without going 100 miles through British waters. The only other route is 100 miles around through the stornry Pacific ocean. He remarks that it is now a state question with both Eng land and America whether the United States shall acquire British Columbia by conquest, or Great Britain lay siege to Alaska. He was entertained by the governor of Vancouver Island, and the chief justice of that island was present. He remarked to liis visitors that the United States had no business in Alaska, since it was only ac cessible through British waters. The British secured the sea coast as far up as Mount St. Elias, and thence a line was drawn due north. Mr. Pierrepont says it is not a 'question of the purchase of British Columbia since Great Britain is too dignified to sell her posses sions, and it is a matter of con quest. He refers to the fact that England is watching the isthmus canal project and is read' to snatch the Pacific coast trade, lie says war is inevitable, because our interests are identical, and the moment the United States inter feres with Great Britain's currying our products to Europe there will be trouble. A great navy is an absolute necessity to the country. The war is not a matter of the near future, but it will be desirable to the people of this countrj', as soon as they are prepared. He says that England is astonished at the vast industries developing in Alaska; that the territory cost the United States only $7,200,000, and the royalty from the seal in dustries alone is 0 per cent, on the investment. The fisheries there are equal to those of all the rest of the world combined, and this pro duce, going through British waters, excites great jealous'. A DisTixorisiiEi) party of Eng lish and Canadians, principally stockholders in the Canadian Pa cific railway, are en route to the present western terminus of that road. Among the members of the party are President George Steph ens, Vice-Presidents D. Mclntire and R. B. Angus of the Canadian Pacific; Prince Hohenlohe, Lanes burg; Count Gleichen, Earl La tham, Lord Elphinstone, and Lord Castledown, London, and a large number of Canadian officials. The party go to St. Paul, and thence to "Wiunipeg, Minnetonka, and Emerson. From the latter place they will go over the Canadian Pacific to GWgarby, 900 miles west of "Winnipeg. Dispatches from Philadelphia say the famous Keely motor is at last completed. Applications for passage on the first Keely mdtor train for New York have already begun to pour in from all parts of the country. The final inspection of the machinery by the trustees was made this forenoon, at which all the stockholders were invited to be present. Treasurer Green was exceedingly hopeful and de clared that the day of Keely's vindication was very close at hand. Pacific county has great possi bilities, and ii our business men don't look out Astoria will get away with its trade. We wish Astoria good luck all the time, but we want it to keep on its own side of the creek. Seattle Her ald. Astoria claims both sides and is making the claim good as fast as it is possible to do." The S. F. Wasp refuses to be edified by the Knight Templars' parade, and says: "We have seen a whole people emitting barbar ous yawps of applause to tickle the vanity of conspirators banded together for no better purpose than to steal honors from the dead and by loud apparel and scream ing pageantry to show an ignoble discontent with republican sim plicity that they profess and the humble station to which their meagre abilities confine them. It is our pleasure to cultivate an oasis of truth in this desert of de ceit. Dr. Muuiall, of the St. I.ouis Medical College, adds his opinion to that of many others that ciga rette smoking is injurious, be cause the smoker inhales the smoke, ne is satisfied that smoke in the process of inhalation comes in contact with four times the ex tent of mucous membrane that it does in ordinary smoking, and hence the absorption of nicotine is excessive. The Doctor remarks that about all cigarettes manufac tured in this country are cheap and vile. NEW TO-BAY. POR GRAY'S HARBOR. THE Str. &EN.
