Sails slaxbanu ASTORIA, OREGON: Tuesday- September 4, issg JSTUj. P. FISHER, Rooms 30 ami 21, Merchants' Exchange Busldhis, is our only authorized agent in San Francisco, and any contracts made uv hint will be recognized. The Daily and Wkiikly Astuiuax are kept on file at his agency An P-uliipn tiiinlrni Commenting on the approach ing completion of the 2STorthcrn Pacific railroad, the N. Y. Tribune sas: The feeling with which the public will regard the event will contrast strongly with the memorable rejoicing when the Union and Central Pacific roads were formalhT united. There is nothing marvelous in this change of feeling. The first great vistory over natural obstacles was hailed as a national triumph; but the new Pacific road stands on a dif ferent footing. When the South ern Pacific was completed to a junction with the Atchinson,Topeka and Santa Fe, at Doming, the new line was regarded merclv as a commercial enterprise, not as an achievement essential lo national unity. So the third completed route, of which the last rail was laid August 2od, in the far north, close to the British boundary, is commonly considered only in its commercial and industrial rela tions. Whether there is now, or is likelv soon lo be, business enough for three distinct trans continental lines, is not quite so clear as some persons would like to have it. The general belief that we have been building too many railroads, and that these enterprises are perhaps some years in advance of the public ncods, prevents anything like enthusiasm at the completion of the work. Men of foresight, however, see that the nation is grcath strength ened by these new arteries of communication, one close to its southern aud the other close -to its northern boundary. In, the event of any war it will no longer be dependent upon a single central route, possibby blocked by snow, for transporta tion of troops and supplies. If assailed from the north or from the south it can move its forces with rapidity to any threatened point. If one road bound the na tion together, three will give it a vastly increased hold upon busi ness and interests of the popula tion adjoining us on the north and south. Mexico is already feeling the influences of American enter prise. Its richest regions can now be reached more easily from Washington than from the city of Mexico, and they have no com mercial outlets except through the Un:tcd states. In a measure sim ilar results have already followed in the Dominion of Canada.. Set -tiers along the entire line from the Lake of the Woods to Vancouver island have as yet no better com munication with the outer world than by the United States rail roads, and when the brandies are completed connecting with the Canadian Pacific lle system will be drawn into even closer intor- wuuc mm iiiu jicujjic ui iHUIIUl- na and Washington Territory. Thus the new arteries of trade, whether financially beneficial to the projectors or not, will tend powerfully to bring the whole con tinent more under the influence of tho republic and their completion may well be recognized as events of national importance which will be more fully appreciated ten years hence than they are now. Ax old operator thus tells how cable messages are received: "I don't suppose you know how the messages arc received over the cables? No. Well, it is alto gether different from this tick, tick, tick. The operators there sit in dark rooms. The messages ome as little electric sparks; the letters are known by the length of the flash. These men go blind at the end of fifteen years, and are pensioned in England but uoth ing is done for them' here. They, are not even paid airy better than we are." The full-rigged ship Moraysh hire oi blasgow, 1A2S tons, sailed irom Lcith recently for the Colum bia with 1,435 tons of firebrick, 3G0 tons fire clay, and 220 tons cement, being the largest canro of that kind ever shipped from that port. Phoeue Cozzexs, the lawverl rjand a women suffragist, it is believi red, lost her life in the Mini -cyclone. inesota Lieut. Storer has reached St Michael's, Alaska, on his way to St. Lawrence bay, with guns and ammunition presented by the government to the Indians there, in testimonial of appreciation of their humane treatment of the crew of tho burned Rogers; but Alaska traders are raising such a hue and cry about the suppbying of arms to savages in the Siberiun straits that the lieutenant reports the facts, and is awaiting further in structions. Traders complain that the Indians at St. Lawrence bay will sell their- weapons .to Indians at Cupe Prinoe of Wales, and finally the arms will reach the Indians about Sr. Michaels; and uli the traders will be massacred. The lieutenant thinks that the St. Lawrence bay Indians will be anx ious to hold on to their guns when they get them, but even if rliey did trade them off the probability of their getting across the ?ir.tU and down the const as ;ar a Michaels is extremely ?mall, but! will await further orders. lib will have to wait until Secretary ChdfcV dler nets back. It now takes twenty-six limirs and fifty-five minutes to go front New York to Chicago via the "Chicago Limited." it is thought that the distance ought to be made in ninetoen hours, aud it is said that the experiment will shortly be made. That would lie traveling at the rate of forty-eight miles an hour, stoppages included. It is believed 100,000 persons perished in Java in the recent earthquake. It is also believed that the garrison and fort at Anjer were swept away. An extensive plain of volcanic stone lias formed in the sea near Latnperg Samoha, preventing communication wit! Tclokbclonir and southwest .lava. "This is a big world,"iH?ople arc wont lo say, yet unless a learned and mathematical scholar designs making us victims of misplaced confidence, forty such planets as uus c.irin couiu uoai in jiko a bunch of toy balloons through a single one of the "spots" diseov ercd on the sun's surface. A working woman testified the other day Wfore the Senatorial Labor Committee, which is now in New York investigating the labor question, that there wero 5,000 women in New York City alone who were out of work and would be glad to get employment on any terms.
